Some people say that overcoming obstacles is just in a matter of being prepared for life’s unexpected adversities, like illnesses or disabilities. But how can you be prepared for something that you believed that would have never happened to you? Alike many people who encounter their own conflicts, I also am one of them who struggles on a day to day basis. But fortunately I have learned to be strong, perseverant, and determined to help me with my own silent disability, that can’t be seen but I know it’s there.
My condition occurred during birth but it wasn’t until I was 15 that I was diagnosed with a talocalcaneal coalition on my right ankle. Doctors had told me that my bones in my ankle had not been fully separated during fetal development. Which eventually led me to my first surgery at the age of 16 which was unsuccessful. Now a year later, I was told that I had developed arthritis on my ankle and that I had to undergo a foot fusion. And till today I am waiting longingly for December 10th to finally feel again the relieve of a pain free life.

Since starting the Running Start program, it has opened many opportunities that I would have never thought that I would receive at the age of 16. But ever since starting this program and till today, my mother has driven me to high school and to college every single day. She has even made time to pick me up from college on the days when I would have classes from 9 am to 8 pm. While I tried to take necessary courses to be able to receive my Associates Degree. Looking back I can sincerely say that I am eternally grateful for the support my mom has given me. She knows exactly how difficult it has been for me these past few years and how I yearn to continue my education to someday become an
middle of paper ... ... Their disabilities have made them stronger, more determined people. Mariatu Kamara and Ishmael Beah’s stories show that no matter how hard life can get, no matter how hard or how many times life knocks one down, he or she can always pick him or herself up and turn their life around for the better. Works Cited Beah, Ishmael.
... front of me since the road to success is far away. Facing unknown obstacles is like drowning in water because obstacles are weighted heavily and sometimes I can't lift it. I just have to use my strength and hopefully, I can raise it off me. I learned that sometimes it is better to have a little false hope than to have none. Perseverance doesn’t not come naturally to all people but eventually it will come because they will find it. It helps them find their inner self by going through obstacles so that they can be more of a life challenge. I believe that this can change a person who they are because it is something everyone needs to go through life.
Growing up, life wasn't easy. As a result of these adversities, I've been able to not only see, but personally experience, having a constant battle in my life. Throughout this journey of life, I’ve had the opportunity to meet people and learn about different backgrounds and hardships many others suffer from. These experiences,

She was my only support system and took on the responsibility of caring, disciplining, and raising me in ways that my mother could not. My older sister ensured that I completed my tasks at school and at home. Being only a year apart and aware that I was growing up right beside her, she made it her priority to do her best academically to demonstrate the importance of education[an aspect that we were not raised to value]. She was my inspiration to become college bound and to take advantage of the resources at my school. I learned how to be resourceful and utilize the outside programs to improve my academic performance to compensate for my high school’s inadequacy. The hardworking qualities that have been instilled in me by my older sister have helped me get into UCLA, but witnessing my mother struggle is what further motivates me to obtain a college
There are many crucial elements college students must have in order to obtain success. The most valuable aspect of self-improvement for a college student to have starts with grit. Grit can be obtained through keeping one’s goals in mind, sticking to a schedule, and staying resilient to animosity. Grit is defined as using perseverance and passion for the goals one has. Someone with grit has courage, resolve and a strong character. Try to picture a person clenching their teeth while faced with a difficult tack, yet they conquer it anyway.
At the start of the semester, my oblivious state of nature associating with the Chinese culture reached an unacceptable level. Implementing a necessary change, I decided to educate myself on different cultures starting with China. I failed to ponder that such a rich, deep culture existed outside America. Encompassed by this country’s unique yet suffocating melting pot culture, my outlook believed ideas such as uniformity between American Chinese food and Authentic Chinese food. After this course, my bigot perspective widened as I witnessed diversity in the world. Before this class, when I thought of Chinese food, my connotation jumped to thoughts associated with chop suey, but as I progressed my education, my mindset gradually pondered foods like steamed buns or “New Year Cakes” with authentic Chinese food.
*Click* *Clack* *Clack.* The sound of controllers fills my ears. The only expression I could see on every player’s face was determination. The desire to prove themselves burned brightly. I turn to meet the box of color that displayed the game I love to play. I thought to myself, “Did I practice enough? How should I play this out? I absolutely have to win!” As these thoughts raced through my mind, I give my opponent a good luck, and press start. “3, 2, 1, Go!” Suddenly, the fictional characters displayed come to life and all of my concentration switches to this game. Determination takes control over me, and the only word I can think of is “Win.” Gaming is a passion that I have had ever since I was young. The competitiveness of it is what
From a child, I was raised to believe marriage is forever. You deal with your problems and work past them. However, six years ago I realized even with that belief sometimes you must find the courage deep within you to do some “do something”. I believe in times of adversity the courage to do what needs to be done, however scary or hard, is deep within you.
Hard work is something that was drilled into me from my high school track coach. If you're going to want to be something you have to put the work in he always said. He always wanted our team to be a family and work hard together. He never wanted to have someone ever doubt how hard we worked for what we earned.
Michael Jordan once said,”Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up.Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it¨. These obstacles can sometimes be a disability. It can also be poverty issue. Even with these obstacles individuals still have to figure out how to cope with them. Some individuals might use the way of guidance and trust their instincts, while others may use resources they have to overcome their obstacle.
Determination is a quality that makes a person continue to try, to do, or to achieve something that is difficult. It is a person’s overall drive to never give up and continue striving towards a desired goal. If I was asked to describe myself in one word, I would choose determined. Throughout my life I have had many experiences where my determination has helped me fight through tough times. By having this quality it has helped me to win a girls bowling IHSA state title, be an all-state athlete, and also continue my goals for my education. Determination is important to me because I need it to achieve my goals and reach my highest potential. Determination starts with the decision to go for the goal and to make the commitment to attain the goal. Determination is also the continuous driving force to overcome the obstacles on the way to the destination. It focuses the mind on the end result. It strengthens the will to carry on, to arrive at the destination.
Entering college for me has had many challenges along the way. Just when I think I’m on the right track, something happens and I practically go into overdrive to overcome those challenges. I’ve had the typical financial hardships that every college student faces when applying for an overpriced education. I’ve had the experience of changing my mind on what I want to do for the rest of my life. I’ve also applied and entered two different colleges. All of this has happened within a year, and it’s hard to believe that the whole process of events started about a year ago.

The topic of disabilities is difficult, however, even more, difficult is living life with a disability. This weekend I was able to experience firsthand how difficult living with a disability can be. Though I was able to experience something I would have never considered doing, I want to emphasize that this was a choice. In being a choice, I recognize that my experience will never carry the weight of those who endure any type of disability day in and day out without a choice. In our current time with the vast amount of change, we face as a society it is critical that experiences such as mine in this simulation experience are discussed across a broad audience. It is through such experiences and discussions that we as a society can better support
