Why should someone be discriminated based on what he/she loves to do? Why should someone be discriminated based on what he/she enjoys doing? During one’s lifetime, using inner sources to overcome any obstacle thrown at you is quite the challenge but, nevertheless, achievable. Throughout my grammar school years, I was a shy individual, fearing what others thought of me. I was never the most popular in grammar school due to the fact that I very rarely socialized. My classmates truly did not know me. I was one (and still am) one of the very few males in my school who enjoy the arts. When I was younger, I was not afraid to tell people about my passion for theatre, but as my classmates started to harass me about it, I decided not to discuss it.
Regardless, I still refused to give in to the standards of society; the fact that I was a boy did not mean I had to join a sport. It simply was not for me. This was the cause of the shy eighth grader I grew up to be. I believe that this is a reason why I did not entirely enjoy my grammar and middle school days. High school transformed me into an outgoing person. Maturation is one of the greatest inner resources any human being could ever use to advance in one’s life. As I matured, I realized that I needed to be myself. If I tried to hide my passions, I would be living a double life which, in my opinion, is not a favorable life to lead. I joined my school’s drama club and, having spent every minute of the day with them from school during the day to rehearsals at night, I finally felt accepted. Currently, I look back at my childhood and consider it one of the most valuable learning experiences I ever underwent. Using my inner resources has taught me that I do not need to hide my hobbies to be accepted by others. As long as I have a handful of friends to accept me, I would be ok. As a result of my experiences, I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. There is a possibility I would have never learned this valuable lesson. My troubled personality in grammar school allowed me to not take my friends in high school for granted. It allowed me to appreciate every moment of my high school experience. In my current school, the drama department is not the most popular department on the campus. In fact, it is often criticized, but I chose to ignore it as I live happily amongst the halls of Monsignor Farrell. As the reputable, Greek philosopher Aristotle once wisely said, “To avoid criticism say nothing, do nothing, be nothing.” I believe this I such an noteworthy quotation by Aristotle because he experienced first-hand how to battle critics. During his lifetime, Aristotle was a very controversial individual due to his career in philosophy. He changed people’s ways of thinking. Although my criticism is not to the same caliber as Aristotle’s, I have looked up to his dealings with society.
Furthermore, I became aware of how this type of behavior could affect decisions that I possibly would make in the future. In college I will meet a more diverse group of peers than over before, and I need to be open minded and fair in my interactions. In addition in my college career, if I became a manager and was in charge of hiring I pondered whether I would be fair.

In today's society, our natural reaction is to put people into a specific class that we feel they fit into upon our first impression. When we were in high school, they were called clicks. There were your jocks and your cheerleaders, who were usually the most popular students. Along with stoners, nerds, and then the people who really didn't fit into any crowd, they were just there. When we were in high school, all of us wanted to be in the "cool crowd". When students feel that they are entitled to go a school because of their background being better than others, it can be explained by the Looking Glass Self Theory. It explains you’re your self-image is determined by how others see you (Gould & Howson, 2014).They feel confident when others look up to you. According to socialization, they must meet the requirement of the group of people of certain background to fit in, causing closed circles. They might feel it is the norm of that group to get the certain school because everyone of that group is getting it, affecting their self-esteem (emotional trait) if they don’t.
For hundreds of years, racial discrimination has been occurring in our society affecting families and underprivileged kids. I was criticized for minor things like getting my clothes dirty or refusing to stay still to get my hair done. These comments grew more and more frustrating as I got older and eventually became far more critical with references to how I played, the clothes I chose to wear, and even being told I was too loud and that my interests weren’t normal. While other girls were discussing their extensive morning routines I was showering and shoving my unruly hair up into a ponytail. This also meant that I was falling behind when it came to personal relationships as my female friends were discovering boys, boys were treating me like an anomaly. Prejudice and discrimination have both been prevalent throughout human history. Prejudice deals with the inflexible and irrational attitudes and opinions that are held by others of one group against those of another. Discrimination on the other hand refers to the behaviors directed against another group. Prejudiced individuals have preconceived beliefs about groups of people or cultural practices. There are both positive and negative forms of prejudice, however, the negative form of prejudice leads to discrimination. Individuals that practice discrimination do so to protect opportunities for themselves, by denying access to those whom they believe do not deserve the same treatment as everyone else.
