For some time I have dreamt of becoming a good Maths teacher. In the Sixth Form, my interest was aroused by the passion shown by my Maths teacher who is also my main source of inspiration. I was impressed with her effective methods of teaching and her enthusiasm in making the lessons interesting regardless of how dull the topic was. Brunei is lacking effective Maths teachers so I would like to add to the existing few and improve Maths education in my country. I realised that students in Brunei tend to dislike Maths because they were taught through memorisation rather than grasping the Mathematical concept. Thus, when I graduated as a Maths teacher, I hope to change the mindset of teachers and students so that they will be enchanted in learning Maths and enjoy exploring the subject. For these reasons I have chosen to pursue a degree course in Mathematics and Computing.

Mathematics has become a very large part of society today. From the moment children learn the basic principles of math to the day those children become working members of society, everyone has used mathematics at one point in their life. The crucial time for learning mathematics is during the childhood years when the concepts and principles of mathematics can be processed more easily. However, this time in life is also when the point in a person’s life where information has to be broken down to the very basics, as children don’t have an advanced capacity to understand as adults do. Mathematics, an essential subject, must be taught in such a way that children can understand and remember.
After his visit to a Shell Research Laboratory, my high school teacher in math told us in class that he was so happy with his education, because mathematics had helped him to understand the explanations and demonstrations that had been given by the Shell researchers. He said, "If you master mathematics then you can understand everything." That was certainly an exaggeration, but it nevertheless sounded like a golden message. Since I definitely wanted to have a better understanding of what was going on around me, mathematics seemed the obvious way to go. Also, if it was not much beyond high school math, then it was pretty easy in addition. What could one wish more? So I enrolled in every advanced math class offered in our high school. Pretty soon I discovered that mathematics was much more than a set of principles that helped one to solve intellectual riddles. It was not a finished system that one could aim to master after some limited time, but it was really a way of thinking, a means of expressing creativity: endless, an old established science, but still fresh and with undiscovered green meadows, nearby and far away.
It is a journey that I have gone through so many years up to now. I still remember the first time I learn mathematics or ‘ilmu hisab’ here in my birth place, Malaysia. It was my mother who begins to teach me mathematics by counting my cute little fingers. When I entered primary school, mathematics was very hard for me. As a secondary subject, society often views mathematics a critical subject for students to learn in order to be successful. Often times, mathematics serves as a gatekeeper for higher learning and certain specific careers. Since the times of Plato, “mathematics was virtually the first thing everyone has to learn…common to all arts, science, and forms of thought” (Stinson, 2004). Plato argued that all students should learn arithmetic; the advanced mathematics was reserved for those that would serve as the “philosopher guardians” of the city (Stinson, 2004). By the 1900s in the United States, mathematics found itself as a cornerstone of curriculum for students. National reports throughout the 20th Century solidified the importance of mathematics in the success of our nation and its students (Stinson, 2004). As a mathematics teacher, my role to educate all students in mathematics is an important one. My personal philosophy of mathematics education – including the optimal learning environment and best practices teaching strategies – motivates my teaching strategies in my personal classroom.
Mathematics grants me the serenity to escape daily hassles and gives me the will to follow my curiosity and look for the answer. The serenity and will are magical electricity, energizing me to forge ahead relentlessly and strive for greatness at any cost. I was determined to develop my skills further in Applied Mathematics after taking a Numerical Analysis class. I was intensely exposed to mathematical computing techniques for the first time. I instantaneously became enchanted with methods in data interpolation and error elimination.
In this math competition, I discovered a type of math. The variety of math that was exposed to me required critical thinking, creativity, and an open mind. I saw math as an art from then on, as it made me think creatively, instead of the trite and straightforward subject that I had once thought mathematics was. As time passed, I got more and more interested, devoted, and curious about the innovative side of mathematics.
When I graduated from high school, forty years ago, I had no idea that mathematics would play such a large role in my future. Like most people learning mathematics, I continue to learn until it became too hard, which made me lose interest. Failure or near failure is one way to put a stop to learning a subject, and leave a lasting impression not worth repeating. Mathematics courses, being compulsory, are designed to cover topics. One by one, the topics need not be important or of immediate use, but altogether or cumulatively, the topics provide or point to a skill, a mastery of mathematics.
One very important factor in every life is the education received as we mature. Education in all subjects is necessary to become a well-rounded individual. Even so, I feel that my subject area has more significance in one’s future because every person uses mathematics every day. Students need to understand why mathematics is important and why they will need it in the future. The way to do that is integrated into the views of the role of the teacher. Teachers need to be encouraging role models that provide students with safety, nurturing, and support in the classroom, along with providing excellent instruction by allowing students to explore and expand their minds in the content of mathematics. Teachers should set high expectations for all students and persuade the students to live up to those expectations. Along the same lines, teaching and learning are complementary concepts.
