Obtaining a degree will ensure that you earn your maximum earning potential. On average a person that has their Bachelor degree earns about $15,000 a year more than high school graduates, while associate degree holders make about $7,000 a year more (Graff, They say / I say: the moves that matter in academic writing, 2014, pp. 208-225). However, over time the gap significantly widens to almost $50,000 a year, in favor of the college degree holder. Some might would argue that not all degrees are equal with some paying significantly less. I agree that the type of degree one receives directly impacts their salary, but the benefits of obtaining a degree are still valuable. By getting a college degree, it helps to ensure that you are qualified for the job that you would like. For example, Andrew Delbanco writes in his article that a college degree is a minimum qualification for entry into the skilled labor market (Delbanco 506). Also David Leonhardt, a writer for the New York Times, wrote that the pay gap between college graduates and everyone else is higher than ever before according to an analysis of Labor Department statistics (Leonhardt). In addition, many adults believe that college is very important. An example of this is the cartoon on the right which helps to illustrate the importance of a college education using a comical dialogue. Delbanco also writes about the fact that a college education helps to raise the salary of the job. He writes that college graduates make more money (Delbanco 506). He also writes that a college education will help to shape Americans into educated citizens and can help citizens to contribute to society. He talks about this when he writes “College education provides an educated citizenry…College graduates should be able to understand the ideas and practices of democratic education”(Delbanco 507). College education also helps to provide for citizenship. Delbanco explains this when he writes “College helps people to enjoy their lives and opens their senses and minds to different experiences”(Delbanco 508). People with a college degree tend to make more money than those who didn’t attend college. This is because most of the jobs that have a higher earning require a college degree. People that only get their school diploma don’t make as much money as someone with a college degree. A study done suggest that people who have a college degree are more likely to get hired because they have an education compared to those who don’t. According to the United States Bureau people who achieved the current degrees earned the following median salaries. People with a doctorate degree earn $100,000 or more. It is easy to think college is not worth the cost to become better, but getting educated molds a better person, and creates happier people in the future and occasionally they become better in health (Leonhardt 25 ). Becoming a better and happier person is pleasing for everyone. Even former President Obama says “‘Education helps us be better people. It helps us be better citizens. You came to college to learn about the world and to engage with new ideas and to discover the things you're passionate about -- and maybe have a little fun’” (Procon.org). Learning and engaging in everything is a skill everyone should have, so like he said we should go to college to be able to do that. Additionally, education shows people to develop more intellectual skill and become more responsible (Pew Social and Demographic Trends). Thus said, being educated and smart is something everyone can do and college helps with that. Likewise, college can encourage someone to be more educated and happier. Reaching the point of happier and more educated is worth the cost.
