Sexual Assault
Each fall, college campuses make a concerted effort to create a welcoming campus for their students, whether that be organizing activities or featuring distinguished guests. However, colleges contribute to victimization instead of protecting its students from sexual assault. Stories of sexual assault victims substantiate that claim that colleges adopt a policy of indifference towards sexual assault, letting college ranking affect their willingness to support the victim and pursue the aggressor. Campus rape is a national problem. Universities’ attitudes intensify emotional turmoil for victims of sexual assault. College campuses fail to respond appropriately to sexual assault accusations, furthering the suffering of the victim

Other victims fear victim-blaming, which some consider more horrifying than the assault itself. For example, a University of North Carolina Student, Annie Clark states, “When I went to an administrator to report my assault, I was told that rape is like a football game. The administrator asked me if, looking back, there was anything I would have done differently.” (Hunting Ground; Huffington Post). Like several others, Annie’s own sexual assault faced scrutiny by the dean, who judged whether Annie did anything to warrant the assault. Men and women, like Annie, who are subject to further victimization explain why only 20% of female student victims, aged 18-24, report to law enforcement (Department of Justice). After receiving a negative response from their university, many lose the desire to find justice in the court system. Florida State, Baylor, Pennsylvania State, the list goes on of colleges who shield their athletes and fraternities from sexual assault accusations. Baylor University’s Board of Regents reported that Baylor’s former football head coach covered up sexual assault allegations involving his players (“The ‘Black Hole’ of College Sports). Florida State University is widely accused of protecting its star quarterback, Jameis Winston from sexual assault allegations. In fact, his accuser faced death threats from students at the university, who ardently supported their national-championship winning quarterback (Hunting Ground). To Baylor, and several other sports-oriented schools, athletics offer a major source of revenue. Losing players to sexual assault allegations represents a monetary loss. In addition, fraternities across the nation find themselves linked to sexual assault incidents. Different fraternities across campuses nationwide are often dubbed “rape fraternities”, in which fraternities are known for predatory frat brothers and a record of sexual assaults (KPBS Public Media). Additionally, the testosterone-driven, hyper-masculinised fraternity culture of heavy consumption of alcohol and casual sex links to sexual assault, in which fraternity brothers view the opposite sex as prey. In "Fraternities and Collegiate Rape Culture" Ayres Boswell and Joan Z. Spade analyze the social perspective of the gendered relations in male fraternities that add to the high rate of violence against women on many college campuses. They list a host of factors that distinguish higher-risk from lower-risk atmospheres discussing the rates of rape in colleges and state how "1 out of 4 college women say they were raped or experienced an attempted rape" (217). Additionally, "1 out of 12 college men say they forced a woman to have sexual intercourse against her will" (Boswell, Spade 217). In other words Boswell and Spade indicated that the rates were high when it came down to women getting raped in colleges by men who also attended those colleges. In addition, Boswell and Spade specify in how most people are aware of rape but know very little about rape culture (Boswell, Spade 217).
When university or police find out about the sexual assault, they immediately blame the victim or question what the victim was wearing, drinking, or doing. “Brownmiller identified four basic rape myths: (1) All women want to be raped; (2) a woman cannot be raped against her will; (3) a woman who is raped is asking for it; and (4) if a woman is going to be raped, she might as well enjoy it” (Helgeson, 2012, p. 432). In The Hunting Ground, the rape myth, which a woman who is raped is asking for it, is seen throughout the testimonies of the survivors. Clark, herself, was told by her dean that “rape is like a football game” and asked if “looking back, what would you have done differently?” (Ziering & Dick, 2015). These rape myths affect how many victims actually report and how seriously sexual assaults are taken within universities and the justice system. For example, some women, themselves, subscribe to rape myths because they see how current cases are handled. “Women who did not physically fight off the person who raped them and who subscribed to the rape myth that “it can’t be rape if a woman doesn’t fight back” were less likely to acknowledge that they had been raped” (Helgeson, 2012, p. 434). According to the authors of “Enhancing Care and Advocacy for Sexual Assault Survivors on Canadian Campuses”, “Sexual assault has immediate and long-term health consequences for victims including suicide, HIV infection, depression, and social isolation,” (Quinlan, Clarke, and Miller). Another common side effect these victims face is post-traumatic stress disorder. Someone experiencing PTSD may have random outburst of anger, have trouble concentrating on day to day tasks, or may even have flashbacks of their attack. These consequences make it hard for victims to get back into the normal routine of everyday life (“Effects of Sexual Assault”). In a case at Amherst College a young women named Angie Epifano faced many of these consequences after she was raped by an acquaintance in one of the college’s dormitories. While immediately choosing to ignore what had happened to her Epifano soon became an emotional wreck. Before the attack Epifano had believed herself to be an extremely strong and independent individual. It is amazing how an isolated incident, such as the one at Colorado, can incite such a large frenzy and call for change. The scandal started with a former recruit telling his experiences during his college visit in Boulder at the University of Colorado. His stories included wild parties with unlimited amounts of alcohol and the open availability to sex with the women of his choosing. The term used for these parties was "sex parties" and recruits were told that the women would perform any sexual act he desired. After the recruit made his experiences public, other stories began to surface from other recruits who had similar experiences at Colorado and other schools. The situation came to a boil when a former female player accused some of her team mates of sexual assault at one of these parties. Other students came forward with similar allegations of football players forcing sex from females at their parties. What started as small story ballooned into a very situation and it became very obvious that the recruiting game was out of control and in need of major change. After the stories surfaced out of Boulder, Colorado more stories began to surface around the country and even Brigham Young University kicked off four players for sexual misconduct.

Sexual assault and rape on college campuses is a serious public issue. Before applying to these accredited institutions most students do not look up the school 's past records of sexual assault and rape on their campus.College campuses have failed to keep students safe the system they use has failed to protect and obtain justice for those that have been victims of sexual assault. Society plays a huge part in how young adults view sexual assault. From young age girls are told “if he’s bothering you it 's because he likes you”, and boys aren 't held accountable for their actions because “boys will be boys”. At what time does it stop being a game. At what age is it not acceptable for boys to mistreat girls, when is the line drawn and, what is the punishment for when this line is crossed.
...e Dean than to report to the police. A police report and a trail take time and one 's rapist could still be walking around campus. But if one reports the the Dean, there s a small and private judiciary process to get the rapist at least removed from one 's classes if any are shared. Perhaps this will make victims more aware that although it might take longer and be harder, reporting to the police may be a better route. Then the rapist will hopefully and up in jail, making the victim feel safe. Maybe this trail will also make people more aware of sexual assault and how it can be stopped. In my research paper I want to continue to look into sexual assault stories, its potential causes, more statistics, and what we can do to decrease the amount of sexual assaults on college campuses. Hopefully, if anything substantial is found, it can be integrated into SIU’s policies.
“I felt his hands start to move down towards my shorts as if he was trying to unbutton them or pull them off. I was still crying at this point and felt so scared that I couldn’t move” (Henneberger, 2012). These are words written by a college freshman after she had been raped, but they are true for many others as well. According to the Rape Crisis Center of Medina and Summit Counties, “every two minutes someone in the US is sexually assaulted” (Get the Facts). “Girls ages 16-19 are four times more likely than the than the general population to be victims of sexual assault” (Get the Facts). These women may be described as slut, cheap, or ready for action, rather than victim, sufferer, or survivor. Rape myths encourage these demeaning terms for women and conceal the reality of rape culture. I will describe the pervasiveness of sexual assault on college campuses as well as the systems and procedures in place to address it. Power plays a role in this issue, including the powerful men on campus such as athletes and fraternity members as well as the administrators in power who regulate the punishments and actions that are taken against the perpetrators. The influence of those in power often goes overlooked in our society because it has become so intertwined with our culture.
According to U.S News the problem with “sexual assaults on campus is not something that is consigned to a region or type of school, but is a ubiquitous reality on campuses of all shapes and sizes across America. All schools are required to designate an employee as their Title IX coordinator to help oversee the schools compliance with the law” (Jarrett). Colleges are responsible for keeping the students on their campus safe. The college has a legal obligation to keep the students safe. The student is going to school there, and the college needs to be responsible for the sexual assaults that happen on college campuses. According to The White House Task Force to protect Students from Sexual Assault “urges schools to show how serious they are about sexual assaults, the task force recommends that schools examine the prevalence and incidence of sexual assaults on campus, and to assess student’s perceptions of a university’s response to sexual assault” (Share, Rachel, and Scott Coffina). Colleges have an obligation to prevent the sexual assaults that happen on their campuses. It is on the college to examine the sexual assaults that happen on their campus, but it is the college’s responsibility to do something about the sexual assaults. Most schools report that they have implemented programs and are actively participating in anti-rape activities around campus but are only doing so to meet the standards and make the school seem safer and more actively against the crime. In a study published in the National Institute of Justice it is reported that “anonymous reporting, which encourages victims to come forward, is an option at only half of the nation's school…and fewer than half the schools inform students on how to file criminal charges.” Schools advertise that they are educating their students about how to report the crimes and the importance of being aware of the dangers of rape but only meet the bare minimum with online programs that students can simply click through to pass. Schools are not effectively communicating that students really need to take these programs seriously and are instead allowing them to have negative attitudes towards the minimal education programs that they have set
Every semester, a student attending a college campus will have at some point experience some inappropriate, unwanted attention. There is always someone at school who tends to make someone uncomfortable, be it through eye contact, persistent advances, or just uncalled for innuendos. Of course, we do our best to ignore it, or to just report the bothersome activity, but that can only do so much without someone finding a way around such things. Someone is always going the extra mile to get what he or she wants, even if it’s at the expense of the victim. We can’t turn a blind eye on our friends, our family, or our associates in these dark, sexual assault situation. Campus sexual assault is a problem with plenty of factors regarding it.
These specific types of men on campus are given special treatment because of the revenue they generate for the school. Good Athletes get the school noticed and bring in fans. The documentary used Florida football star, Jamaus Winston, as an example. He was accused of rape by a women featured in the film, however was never question or fully investigated. It was believed that he was responsible for several rapes. He still was allowed to play football and later received a national award as an outstanding player. Fraternity members often become alumni that make generous contributions to the school. The consequences of sexual assault are harmful and long-lasting and affect not only the victims but also their families and communities. Solutions to this problem _______. But, as Richard Edwards, chancellor of Rutgers-New Brunswick college said, “Regardless of the number, it’s a major problem, affecting our students and people all across the country and it has to be taken seriously” (5). If people work together, the steps can be taken to stop sexual assault in colleges.
According to a statement addressing the sexual victimization of college women The Crime and Victimization in America states that, “ One out of four women will be sexually assaulted on a college campus.” This disturbing fact has not minimized throughout the years, instead it is continuing to worsen throughout college campuses. Sexual assault is not an act to be taken lightly.
