College Athletes Should Be Paid

Within college athletics, there has been controversy over if these athletes should be paid or not. These athletes have worked at their craft for their entire life and should they be awarded by playing this sport with amounts of money because they are good at it? College athletes should not be paid because college athletics are not professional, they are for the betterment of the athletes throughout sports as well through their furtherment in education.

College athletics have been apart of the college education for the longest time. Certain colleges have been paying their players with bonuses or straight up money for their athletic ability. But do these athletes deserve a larger slice of the pie? “It seems a reasonable balance except for one thing—top-tier college athletics isn’t an amateur pursuit. It’s a big business built on the performances of student-athletes, and they deserve a bigger slice of that rather rich pie (Scott Martelle).” Because colleges make so much money off of their students there has been a controversy if the athletes should be paid because of this. College athletics are not supposed to be professional sports. Their main existence is to further the student’s athletic ability not a paying pursuit for the best athletes. “The coaches and administrative staffs are paid competitive (and in the case of top coaches, obscene) wages. If the NCAA is going to limit the amount of benefits that go to the players—the people who do the real work—then shouldn’t it also limit the amount of money the coaches receive(Scott Martelle)?” Although the college coaches and staffs are being paid large amounts for their efforts the students still shouldn’t be able to be paid large amounts of money for their efforts.
