Had I been told in my childhood that some day in the future I would be so intensely invested in pursuing graduate studies in something so seemingly lackluster as “rocks”, I possibly would have pressed the refresh button on the direction my life was headed. Fatefully enough, the last sixteen years of school and college education has directed me to take up the multidisciplinary subject of geology for advanced studies, while rigorously grooming me to embark upon a research-oriented graduate course. I have earned a Diploma in both Classical Indian music (2012) and Fine Arts (2013) owing to my rigorous involvement for over fifteen years in both disciplines. After graduating from high school, I entered Soochow University, whose music department is among the best in Taiwan. During these four years, I had numerous opportunities to perform on stage. Realizing early on that performance is the lifeblood of musicians, I joined as many orchestras, wood bands, and brass quintets as possible to acquire performance experience. Having numerous performing chances, and enjoying each of them, inspired me to become a professional musician in the future. Besides taking part in performing activities, I also used my experiences and knowledge to teach students. Believing that teaching others how to appreciate the beauty of life is fulfilling, I teach both to give knowledge and to enhance my own artistic ability. Because I so enjoyed my conversations with students, I remain committed to teaching and trying to convince others of the limitless joys of music.

For examples we can turn to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, who just completed their ‘Education Week’, collaborating with Benjamin Northey and Paul Rissmann in a huge variety of children and adult education sessions. Similarly, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra make an example of their Professional Pathways program, providing insight into many aspects of a career in professional music in aspiring musicians, and their school tours, playing both for and with junior primary students. The Paleo Expedition’s stated purpose is to have an “unforgettable adventure in science and create lasting friendships and memories.” For me, this will be an experience to enhance my palette of scientific skills as well as making connections with others who desire the same. I hope to use this excursion to be able to narrow down my future career. For the longest time, I knew I wanted a job in the sciences, but it was not until this past year that I decided it was going to be in the field of chemistry. Still, even that does not make a career. I know that there are many types of chemistry specialties and the Paleo Expedition would be my chance to see what life is like for a chemist who specializes in geology.
Stalactites hung from ceilings like icicles and stalagmites sprung up from the ground in different peaks and colors. I was interested how all these rocks were able to tell their own story. As I stared at these rock structures, I felt myself traveling back in time, witnessing the years that it took for a water droplet to form a large cylindrical configuration. There were places where the stalactites and stalagmites met, forming an elegant column that portrayed a million year work of a natural process. The walls of the caverns were spotted with fluorescent minerals that gleamed of silky textures of which I only dreamed of touching, but our tour guide insists that we do not, as to maintain absolute conservation of the cavern.
Geology field trip Journal On Tuesday, October 25, 2016, our Geology class visited the Hammonds Rocks, in South Mountain, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. The main goal of the trip was to observe real life examples of geological concepts and principles, that we have studied over the course of this semester. Throughout the trip, my classmates and I were able to see different geological features that resulted from geological processes such as erosion, transportation, and deposition. Along the way to the site, our professor tried to show and explain to us some of the real life examples of the differential erosion process along the Susquehanna river, and near the site at South Mountain park, where we were able to see, through a broad view of the Cumberland valley, the features resulting from differential erosion along the valley.
Currently, I am fascinated by how chemical changes in water and the atmosphere as well as changing weather has affected life on earth in the past as well as the very composition and formation of the planet we know today. This has been a major interest of my for a while now and because of this, I have read a great deal on how the chemistry of oceans -their oxygen content, for example- has influenced the evolution of marine and land dwelling organisms throughout geologic time. I have also studied a great deal of geology, specifically understanding how changing oceans -both their location and composition- has affected the geological formations all across the world. One of my favorites in the Western Interior Seaway which I have read extensively on. One of the most important aspects of my research, however, has been being able to talk to scientists who study these fields.

When people think of geology, they usually think of rocks and fossils. However, geology is actually a very large field of study. The knowledge of geologists ranges from rocks and fossils to the moon and other planets (Hammonds 7-8). Geologists use a variety of subjects in their work, but the sciences and math are the most important. Some of the sciences geologists study are physics and chemistry (12). English is also a subject that geologists use when communicating with other scientists, the media, and the public (12) . Because of these tasks, it is important for geologists to have a wide knowledge of these different subjects.

My major is communication with two concentrations. My first concentration is broadcasting. Geology directly relates to the broadcasting aspect of my degree because where I live determines events that I might have to take into account, depending on the environment and geological area. Depending on the area I live there could be tragedies like earthquakes and landslides. Those are events that I may have to discuss as a news reporter or anchor.
I also looked at the table for the geology/geoscience department, which had lab-manufactured crystals on display, such as quartz. I learned that chemistry is very important to the study of this field, in that heat, pressure, and chemicals are all utilized to yield these creations. Differing mineral structures, such as a tetragonal structure, were also presented, which assists a geoscientist in mineral identification. Wandering to the English department display, I signed up as being interested in an English Language Minor, as I very much enjoy writing. I also learned about Utica College’s literary journal, Ampersand, in which students can submit their poetry, prose, and artistic works to be included in each yearly publication.
