College Application Essay Most people wouldn’t consider fishing a life changing experience. I, however, believe that it plays a big role in shaping the person that I am today. When I was eight years old, my hobbies were similar to those of the stereotypical boy my age; video games, television, and a maximum of about 30 minutes spent outside per day. At this age, I wasn’t very close to my dad because of his constant flow of work, and my busy television schedule that didn’t allow for much bonding time. It was on a cloudy day under a bridge on Lake Lewisville when my interpretation of a “quality time” had changed. My dad has always enjoyed the outdoors. It seemed as if a good majority of his free time was spent planning a fishing trip for my brother and I, even though I would always decline. When I was about eight, the power in our house went out. This gave my dad the perfect opportunity to take my brother and I out on the boat. Having nothing else to do, I came along. After about an hour of traveling, we got to one of my dad’s favorite fishing spots. At the time, I could think of about a million different things that I would rather be doing. I had absolutely no Idea what to do so I grabbed the rod and started feverishly reeling in, and to my surprise I had a difficult time holding onto the rod. I indicated that I had a big one by screaming at the top of my lungs calling for help. My dad, full of excitement, came running to my aid just as I pulled the fish ashore. Being the amateur that I was, I didn’t know how to compare my fish to others. My dad, however, was staring down at it in amazement.
