College Admissions Essay: Why Medicine?

As an undergraduate student, I explored different career options and at one point the question arose "Why medicine?". The more I thought, the question itself became an answer, "Why not medicine?". Witnessing a person heal because of one's skills is the most gratifying experience one can have, and I could not be more fortunate than to pursue a career in a field, the fundamentals of which are based on it.
Hands on clinical experience during my 3rd year medical school clerkship at a tertiary care military hospital in Pakistan, sparked my initial interest in the practice of adult medicine. Fueled by my interest, passion and ambitious goals, I vigorously applied for electives at top hospitals in United States during the fourth year of my medical school. Based on my performance, I was selected and allowed to pursue the opportunity of a 3 month elective rotation at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. It provided me a wonderful insight into the United States Health Care System, an experience which I will be eager to reciprocate and build upon in your program. I feel that the strength of any system lies in effective team work and collaboration. United States is the ideal place to harness the skills of a dynamic, persistently hardworking and devoted individual like me. This experience cultivated my personality and I developed a fine understanding of the clinical research process. I am a strong proponent in the notion that in order to effectively understand knowledge, you have to take part in its generation. My research focused on reviewing outcomes in patients with alcoholic vs. biliary pancreatitis. As a reward for my hard work, my abstracts were accepted as posters at national meetings. This opportunity also allowed me to become efficient with time management, and multitasking that translated into increased productively as I managed patients with my attending while simultaneously working on research projects.
