Movies often portray unrealistic characteristics of high schoolers, and as children, we grow up and believe that we have to be or look a certain way in order to achieve success during those four years before we graduate. Like many with a developing mind, I was ecstatic to be like those beautiful models roaming the halls and greeting everyone with a smile; however, I had a bigger goal in mind; I yearned to be a those girls who kept the crowd alive during Friday nights. On my journey to my current position, I went through various challenges that shaped me and define who I am today. If a mouse were to scurry along one’s floor, the slightest “squeak” would be heard; nonetheless, unless the person was looking directly at the floor, the person would not notice the minuscule rodent. Consequently, if I were to stroll down the school corridor, my five foot body would be disregarded. Because of this, no one expected me to pursue a sport whose sole purpose was to holler and jump around like a hare. Nonetheless, when I was eligible to try out, I left the judges astounded as my motions resembled those of a dagger and my cheers were coherently projected, all while flashing a smile. That year, I was elected co-captain of the eight grade squad; in addition, due …show more content…
Although words rarely escaped my mouth, my keen eyesight served an aid to view the squad’s current situation. Typically, the captain maintains the squad united while enforcing rules to keep the girls from conflict; however, the girl who held this position at the time behaved like a fascist dictator. I failed to communicate my concerns as she ignored the other members’ ideas and comments. That year we both failed as authority; nonetheless, it taught me that in order to be an efficient leader, one must not only listen to their teammates, but also make themselves be
The first part of the series of articles The Physical Education Hall of Shame lists childhood games which are considered inappropriate for physical education classes. The author argues that some games are potentially unsafe, have minimal participation time factors, they are potential to embarrass the student in front of their classmates, and focus on eliminating students from participation. One of the harmful games is Dodgeball. Even though the game involves teamwork, strategy, and motor skills, the game might be dangerous, and also includes the highly skilled students. Another game mentioned by Williams is Duck, Duck, Goose. It is a game of a minimal participation, where generally five students
Every teenager who has attended high school can relate to the pressures that come from the desire to be popular. It’s normal for teens to feel the need to be in the “in crowd” and to fit in with the “beautiful people.” Television shows help contribute to this “need” to fit in. One such show, Beverly Hills 90210, is based on beautiful teenage characters, most of whom are wealthy and, coincidentally, popular.
My earliest recollection of self image would take me back to elementary school and the problem of what to wear to class the first day. Would I fit in or be ridiculed for my shirt, pants or shoes? This was an early lesson watching people judged by their clothes and physical appearance. The phenomenon of image changed dramatically when I reached high school. I believe high school is a micro society in itself with personal appearance high on the list of things that are coveted. I wanted to fit in but didn’t want to compromise my individuality regarding dress, hair style and choice of peer group. During my high school years my image was ever-changing. I excelled in sports and was viewed as an athlete. On the other hand, my long hair gave me the image of a free spirit. I enjoyed hanging out with the athletes but also found myself drawn to another element; people who smoked cigarettes, drank alcohol and used drugs. I looked at these individuals as taboo, but glamorous at the same ti...
Every day she came dressed for school in brilliant colored leggings partially covered by a relaxed sweatshirt unevenly rolled at the sleeves. Her plump belly took shape under her shirts, creasing slightly, like a curtain conforming to its width. Her feet plowed into her white Keds and snuggled inside fluorescent socks scrunched at the ankle. Mary Beth’s Keds curved toward each other as she stepped, and it was evident she was pigeon-toed. (This was another characteristic we loved to imitate.) I saw her ferociously sprint during gym and on our Field Day. It was dreadful. Her leg stampeded into each other in an effort to run straight. Her arms flung back and forth anxiously like an ape’s, and I could see her tongue sticking out of her crooked mouth in determination. She was hopeless.
In his article, “Physical Education Hall of Shame,” Williams, strives to prove that the traditional games and
Adolescents is a time of significant life transitions in which young adults learn to cope with changes that are brought about by physical and emotional maturation (Sands and Howard-Hamilton, 1994). During this time girls begin to become more aware of themselves as females, and learn to identify society’s signals to conform appropriately for their gender (Sands and Howard-Hamilton, 1994). The highschool girls that are present in this writers program are starting to unders...
We often consider the distinguishing factors between a good and great guard to the details of our performance quality as a group; however, to achieve greatness as a whole we should first consider the contributions of all guard members as individuals. Last season, our team received a negative reputation for its mistakes and appearance as a group, yet no one wanted to take responsibility as an individual for not putting forth their best effort. I would be a successful captain because I am encouraging, organized, efficient, determined, and perceptive and would reinforce the standards set for this guard by identifying the issues at the individual level with respect and compassion yet experienced authority. As captain, I would always “be the example”
Let’s flash back in time to before our college days. Back to then we had lunch trays filled with rubbery chicken nuggets, stale pizza, and bags of chocolate milk. A backpack stacked with Lisa Frank note books, flexi rulers, and color changing pencils. The times where we thought we wouldn’t make it out alive, but we did. Through all the trials and tribulations school helped build who I am today and shaped my future. From basic functions all the way to life-long lessons that helped shape my character.
Adolescents is a time of significant life transitions in which young adults learn to cope with changes that are brought about by physical and emotional maturation (Sands and Howard-Hamilton, 1994). During this time girls begin to become more aware of themselves as females, and learn to identify society’s signals to conform appropriately to their gender (Sands and Howard-Hamilton, 1994). The high school girls that are present in this writers program are starting to understand that they can use their bodies to get attention from boys therefore making them value their individual beauty. Some girls have identified that the “boys” that they like do not value them for their brains, but for their beauty and therefore this is where high school becomes a popularity contest, and academically their grades begin to suffer.
Changing from high school to college could be fun and exciting because you’re going to be in a different environment. High school and college are two different places that people go to receive an education. Both places are important part of everyone’s life. Dealing with the transition of the two diverse places makes it easy for you to point out contrast things about the two. But even though they both help and educated students, they have stuff that are not common. From the class and days of class, to the attire you have to wear ,which is noticeably different and certain high school rules are totally in contrast with college rules. This essay is discussing the different and similarities of high school and college.
As a ninth grader, my chances of making the Varsity soccer team were slim, so the test’s importance was intensified. Anticipation and fear overpowered me as the first beep blared. Upon completing each race, coaches crossed off numbers, and the line dwindled. Knowing my mental stamina was as important as my physical state, I forced myself to continue despite my exhaustion. With the last beep, my legs became lead. Suddenly, the team captain, running beside me, grabbed my jersey and threw me towards the end line shouting encouragement between gasps for air. His act jeopardized his time
Throughout the years changes both positive and negative advancements are forming everywhere, They can be major or minor, however changes are always made. One place that has changed over the years is high school. High school has adjusted in several ways over the years, different high schools have different adjustments, but all high schools have some similar changes. High school has changed over the years by becoming more digital, kids get cyber bullied and kids use their phones a lot more.
Cones, bowling pins, bowling balls and iPads were arranged throughout the room. It felt like the gymnasium had been transformed into an actual bowling alley. I observed the second grade students waiting in the hallway for their physical education class to begin. The students seem eager and impatient to enter the room. They kept giggling and peeking their heads around the corner to look inside the gym for clues as to what they might be doing for the next hour. Students weren’t allowed to come into the room until they heard Mr. Dunn turn on music. The music was the students’ cue to enter the room. To release all the excitement and energy of his second graders, Mr. Dunn had the students run into the gymnasium for the start of class. Warm ups are important when participating in any form of physical activity, but instead of merely instructing his students to perform jumping jacks or pushups, Mr. Dunn turned on a Kidz Bop playlist and allowed the students to run around the gym. Once the first song began, the children were permitted to run, skip, hop, dance, walk, or whatever else they wanted to do, as long as they weren’t bothering anyone and were moving in a loop around the gymnasium. The students had the freedom to be silly for the duration of the first song, but then were expected to listen carefully for instructions from their teacher for the main activity. I thought this
You know, it is really strange how quickly time passes, after spending my whole childhood wishing I was an adult, now here we are and it's a little hard to grasp. It feels like just yesterday I was standing here in the same position at eighth grade graduation. Ahh, middle school, such a joyous time for all of us, free of maturity and not a care in the world. The biggest decisions I ever had to make then was deciding which group to stand with at passing time and choosing which shirt from my extensive collection of Stussy and No Feat apparel to wear. We were all naive to the danger that lurked just around the corner. We were unaware that the carefree world we lived in was about to come crashing to the ground in a blazing inferno of real school work and responsibility ... otherwise known as high school.
High school students tend to live each day as if it’s the pinnacle of their existence. For some, it is, as they’ll come to realize the same measures of success employed in that time cannot be their crowning achievement in the real world. The values and principles generally exhibited by high school students are as far reaching from the truth as graduation is from retirement. For those who took high school lightly, enjoying more of the social aspect and never put effort into their schoolwork, they will have to live with those decisions for the rest of their lives. The life that you have been living for the past ten years may not be the one you wanted, but it is definitely the one you chose. Life is the result of choices that we have made and if you are fortunate you can look back at a life full of smart decisions. If not, you can look back at all the pitfalls that you wish you could erase. The catch is, those are the decisions you often learn from the most. While my life hasn’t been perfect, I pursued to my fullest extent and achieved accolades.
