“There’s always been those times when I needed a breather. When I might need a quick break from being the leader, ‘Cause I’m just human, you gotta feel that.”
Never in my life has a group of words resonated with me like these words sung by artist Kehlani. In my life, I have overcome many challenges and setbacks. A certain responsibility or weight on my shoulders always reminds me I cannot let anyone down. Everyone in my life expects me to excel in everything all the time. Not living up to the expectations people have of me made felt inferior. A few months ago my motivation and drive to finish anything from my schoolwork to a meal drained out of me. Carrying myself around with exhaustion was detrimental to my grades. I was so disappointed in
Now, whenever I’m faced with a new, unfamiliar, or difficult task, I only hold myself to my own standards and expectations. Free from the weight of other’s expectations of me, I feel as though tasks that once felt burdensome now feel more tangible and achievable. Not that I suddenly feel as though I don’t need to give every new challenge everything I have, I just do so only seeking to meet my already high
“Adversity isn't an obstacle that we need to get around in order to resume living our life. It's part of our life.” - Aimee Mullins
I must say that my personal strengths lies within my determination, perseverance, and persistence to work hard and become a better person. Throughout my whole life, I have used individuals and their compliments to motivate myself to become better, faster, and stronger as a person, hoping to exceed their expectations. That might sound shallow, but those individuals are the fuel that keeps me from ever giving up. On the other hand, my personal challenges consists of the fact that I am a weakness to disappointment. Disappointment from a mentor whom I respect can stop me in my tracks, leaving me in state where that is the only thing I can think about. As a result, I work hard to not just stop disappointment but to prove them that their disappointment in me is just temporary. However, I hope you do not come to conclusion that my hard work is only to please other but to please myself and the personal expectation that I
“In this life, to earn your place you have to fight for it.”- Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, singer/ songwriter .
The hardships I have faced in my life thus far have at times seemed the most menacing monster one could hope to face; however, after I have overcome them or passed them by I find that in respect to others I know I have faced nothing but the smallest of problems. Unlike others I have not lost anyone close to me, been made to relocate over and over, or been tormented because of belief or being. But even though my life may lack the most stereotypical forms of adversity, one should not infer that I have never been made to feel alone, forgotten, and completely lost.
"You will have bad times, but they will wake you up to the stuff you weren't paying attention to. Robin Williams Everyone knows the gnawing feeling in your stomach when it feels as if life has taken a turn for the worse. It seems as if all hope is lost and you have hit *gasp* rock bottom. It is important that hope is kept throughout this mindset, however, because it is during those trying times that the most personal growth and development can occur. Once rock bottom is hit, the only place to go is up.
During my lifetime i’ve had many setbacks and failures and I used to think that these failures defined who I am as a person. I’ve failed at many things and thought that I could not improve on my failures, and I would not be able to better myself. I had a fixed mindset during my early years of high school. I did not think of myself as someone who could have a growth mindset but someone who would stay in a fixed mindset. I have learned to grow out of a fixed mindset and into a growth mindset, I am still in the process of changing my mindset to a growth mindset.
Students today face a great deal of school-related pressure. Their parents and teachers constantly expect them to put their classes first and to do their best on all their work. However, their friends and peers sometimes put negative pressure on them, putting down people who always do well. Emily Dickinson addresses what can hold people back from achieving their best in her poem “We Never Know How High We Are,” which explains that people don’t know what they can achieve until they have a challenge before them. The majority of people then manage to rise to the occasion and achieve what they might have believed impossible. Dickinson goes on to state that what people consider heroic could actually be ordinary if people put forth their best effort. The fear of success and of standing out in a crowd holds individuals back. This poem sends the message that fear of success holds people back through
I'm so happy that our school runs a program like this that allows students to see the different cultures around the world. I would love to participate because I would love to see the culture and because when I grow up I hope to have a job that heavily involves speaking a different language. I have heard that when you immerse yourself into the culture you get a greater understanding of the language and I believe this could help me with the studies I intend to peruse. I have not participated in WMS community service but I feel this would be a great way to show me what it's all about and how I can help in my own community. I have participated in some community service outside of school. One thing I have done is made care packages for soldiers overseas. After I sent off my package I felt so happy that
... We all have a purpose in life, and whether it’s good or not, we must go through what we go through, and once we finish we’ll notice that it’ll pay off. I go through many things in life every single day, but that doesn’t stop me. I must keep pushing forward without looking back. I have dreams, and so do you. Chase them. Go for them. No one should stop you from doing what YOU LOVE. It’s your life, “if you don’t grind, you don’t shine”; meaning, you must work hard for what you’re planning on doing in life.
Unfortunately, my first semester in PATH is starting to come to a close. However, while we endured many time consuming tasks during our first semester in PATH, the class has been focusing mainly on enhancing our essays. My teacher had given us assignments such as MAPS, MASKS, essay tracking documents, essay checklists and rubrics to meliorate our essays into becoming the college standard. Even though some of these assignments were tedious tasks to undertake, they had benefited me in a way of enhancing the quality of my essay. If it was not for the portfolio process, my essay would not have met the criteria for my college composition teacher. My college composition teacher is particular when it comes to what she wants to see in our essays.
When I left my room, my mother knew that I had gone through a rough time, and I did not want to talk to her about it. Even though there was only a month left in my school year, I promised myself that I would be completely truthful to my friends, my family, my heritage, and myself. I expected all my friends to leave me, but I was fully prepared for this. However, none of this ever happened. My friends didn’t leave me, I wasn’t alone at the lunch table, I wasn’t even seem differently by those around me. I had failed my family by doing this, and I wished I had stopped acting like someone I wasn’t sooner. This is one of the only mistakes I have made which I consider a failure because it had taken me close to a year to fix, and this is why I consider it my most successful failure.
Life isn’t going to go the way you want it to.” (Vanderwerf 1) Mark Weber said to a group of students over a live videoconference. Life has its ups and downs, and certain people get thrown harder than others, but we all have hardships that we must face. We flourish from our mistakes and the aching we face in our lifetime. But how do we do it, how do people keep pushing through when everything feels like it is ending? What is shouting at them in the back of their mind that keeps them moving forward?
...nk of as accomplishments that shaped who we are. Measuring ourselves against our personal achievents and the adversity we face is one of the many ways that we can examine our lives and potential. Adversity plays such a big role in our lives that it's almost invisible. We don't realize that practically everyday we face it and set it up to determine who we are going to be. Sometimes people are given a really crappy deck of cards and don’t know how to handle them. When were in a difficult situation, or faced with adversity we have two choices. Battle through it and become an even greater individual because of it or succumb to the situation and give up. It it all depends on how much determination a person has to fight through the adversity and in turn, become a better person.
During my freshman year of college, I had met one of my best friends, who go by name Jill. (She lives in New Jersey and while I live in Pennsylvania) I found it to be strange that sometimes, it feels like we have grown up with one another but in reality we have only one another for four years and I couldn’t be more thankful. I can remember when we met at school as if it was yesterday.
