Growing up I could never find another activity that I was talented at, enjoyed, and loved doing other than dancing. I have been dancing since I was three years old. I have taken almost every style of dance including ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, and contemporary just to name few. Dance was the one of the only things I spent my time doing. Between the solos, practices, and competitions I really just did not have time for anything else. I loved dancing but I always felt like there was something that I was missing out on. I could focus more on my dancing. Public school was not conducive to my dance schedule. Dance was all I knew so that was the only thing I really cared about. The summer before my junior year, I decided that I wanted to go back to Atascocita High School and just dance on the drill team. I realized that dancing did not have to be the sole purpose for existing and ultimately other things led me to that decision. I registered and joined the Atascocita Patriettes Dance Team at Atascocita High School. When I had to pick my classes I did not know what electives to take along with my core subjects. I picked a random class that the counselor suggested called graphic design since I had told her that I liked working with computers. On the first day of junior year I met the teacher Mrs.
Priesmeyer and I immediately knew I would like her. I do not remember anything in particular as to why I felt this way. For whatever reason I had a really good feeling about her and this class. One of the first things Mrs. Priesmeyer said to the class was, “How many of you took this class just because you needed to fill up another elective credit?” When she asked this about half the class raised their hands. She then proceeded to explain that we all made a good choice because this would be one of the most interesting and exciting classes we will take in high school. Like me, most of the other students in the class did not really understand what graphic design was. Once she began explaining what the class was all about, we were all very interested. She explained that we would be working on programs like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. I had definitely heard of Photoshop before so I then began to have a better idea of what the class was about. She also told us that we would learn about typography, color theory, art history, art styles, and different advertising/marketing techniques that we could apply to graphic design. “ And by the way, we do not use Microsoft Paint in here.” She concluded before class ended. I did not understand what she meant by this but now I find it slightly amusing that some people think that is what graphic design is about because that year I would learn that graphic design was more in …show more content…
depth than that. About halfway through that year sometime in the winter semester, Mrs. Priesmeyer talked to our class about the Advanced Graphic Design class and how we could apply to be in it. At this point, I had not really thought about this being something I could actually pursue past high school so I did not really put anymore thought into applying to be in that class. I did not think I was good or talented enough to be in it. She handed out an information sheet attached with an application to the whole class but I just put it right back into my bag without looking at it really. A while after this, we started working on a movie poster project.
We had to make a movie poster in the minimalist, constructivist or pop art style. I chose to do a Black Swan movie poster that was Minimalist and Constructivist. One day in class when I was working on my poster Mrs. Priesmeyer stood behind my chair and was watching what I was doing. “ Wow Jessica that is really good you are portraying the minimalist style perfectly.” I told her thank and kept on working. Her compliment motivated me to make my poster even better. At the end of class she announced that their would be a contest between the graphic design classes and that the Advanced Graphic Design kids would pick the best ones from each class. Whichever posters they picked would get printed out, laminated, and would receive a grade of 110. This motivated me even more.
About a week later everyone submitted his or her posters online. A couple of days later she showed us which posters had been chosen by the Advanced Graphic Design students. I was so excited that my poster had been chosen. That moment was a huge turning point for me because I finally felt accomplished in something other than dance. Everyone in my class also talked about how cool my poster was. After class Mrs. Priesmeyer told me that I should definitely apply for the Advanced Graphic Design class because she thought I had a lot of talent and
potential. By the end of my junior year she told me that I was for sure in the Advanced Graphic Design class and I was so excited. My senior year was the year that I really improved and developed as a Graphic Designer. Because of this class I learned how to deal with clients and got to fulfill design requests for the community and school. That year Mrs. Priesmeyer really helped me decide how I could incorporate graphic design into my career path. She told me that I should not major in Graphic Design because it was a very narrow field and thought that I had other talents besides just graphic design. Because of her, she is the reason why I am choosing to major in Mass Communications in Advertising. She helped me realize what my talents were and how I could pursue them. I am very thankful for her because without her I still might not know what I wanted to do with my life today. Even though I will always love dance I will also love graphic design. I realized that dance was not the only thing I wanted to do with my life so I am very thankful for the two years I got to spend in Graphic Design and that I got to have Mrs. Priesmeyer as a teacher. Because of graphic design, I now know exactly what I want to do with my life. I feel very blessed to have had this experience because there are a lot of people my age who still do not know what they want to do with their lives.
Waving to my teammates as I walked out of the tennis courts, the reminiscence of a smile appeared on my face after winning a close match. A freshman teammate joined me and I heard her take a deep breath as soon as we were out of others’ earshot, muttering something nervously. “I’m sorry, what was that?” I asked a little too loudly, the excitement still buzzing. She mustered courage and made sure to speak clearly this time: “I’m being bullied, and I feel so trapped that I only see self-harming as my way out.”
I turned in an application for the position of yearbook editor at my high school at the end of junior year. The two current editors and my yearbook teacher interviewed me for the position. These editors were my friends of course, but I was still so nervous, I wanted to prove to them that I was an eligible candidate. I got a few laughs in but tried to keep it as professional as I could. A few days passed and I had begun questioning the status of my application. One day in class, my teacher called me in the hallway. He was standing outside and asked me if I would like to accept the position of the editor. I was frozen, caught off guard, I was not expecting this. My heart was racing, I could feel my face getting warmer, I couldn’t speak all I could do was laugh nervously. I finally got myself together to form the word “yes.”As a freshman, I never would have thought that I would be taking on such a big responsibility. It wasn’t
Since the age of two, I have been dancing. I have been involved in lyrical and classical ballet, contemporary, pointe, hiphop, jazz and tap. When I turned 6 I also took up gymnastics. Through middle school I danced, and did gymanstics as well as softball and soccer. I loved these sports but when high school hit, I had to pick one and I chose cheerleading. I chose this sport because it was not only a extraordinary team athletically but they were extremely involved with the community. We had fundraisers for less fortunate children multiple times and even got to interact with them every winter. The leadership role on the cheer team taught me so much, we lead the entire student body to have school spirit and respect at the football games every friday night. My senior year I decided to switch back to dance and tried out for my high school dance team, and made it! It has been such a blessing to me by showing me even more leadership and how to serve others at our school and in the community.
To people who don’t know who I am, I have always been known as the pretty brown skinned girl that had something special about herself that they could not figure out. Nonetheless, whenever I am put in the spotlight to showcase my talents, everyone can finally see what is so mysteriously special about me. I have a quiet confidence about myself that makes people want to get to know me better, and I also stand out amongst other people who are highly confident about themselves. Additionally, I am a talented dancer that uses the special trait of quiet confidence to my advantage when I have to be a leader for my team. My talent/trait of dancing and having a quiet confidence is meaningful to me and would leave this application incomplete without it because these traits help me to appreciate who I am and they will ultimately help me have a successful future.
There are kids and students, even from a young age, who are told by their parents that they have to play a sport. These parents find it important that their kids be involved in some type of physical activity, and it is. So a little girl thinks taking a dance class would be interesting and that she would be able to please her parents by this choice of sport. But when she comes to tell them what sport she would like to take up, they tell her dance is not a sport. Even after explaining to them that if someone is good enough they can compete, which is just like any other sport, this little girl’s dream of being a competitive dancer is crushed by her parents jaded view of what is considered a sport. As a dancer myself, I can understand why people do not think dance is a sport. For my 11 years of dancing, I have been told that dancing is not a sport. I might be against this statement , but I can somewhat agree that dancing isn’t a sport. Dancing is more considered an art than a sport according to Tengaged. However, dancers are not always competing against another team, which is one reason why dance not considered a sport. Debate.org states that people do not think that there is much physical activity required to dance. Lastly, dancers are not scored by how many points or goals they make, but by a panel of judges.

DANCE IN PUBLIC SCHOOL CURRICULA Dancing is a form of art that allows many children to express themselves through body motion while developing many skills. Children throughout the world have been dancing since the day they began walking. When a child takes their first steps and puts together the simplest combination of movements, that would be considered as dancing. Music also plays a major role in the development of children understanding dance, because it can be used as an accompaniment, and can help children get a better feel for the rhythm in dance. Over the past century, educators have come to the conclusion that dance serves as a form of art, and should be taught in public schools and colleges to help the growth of children of all ages both physically, mentally, and academically.
Sophie Venus was the artist that I interviewed. Sophie has loved art ever since she was in kindergarten. She said that she has taken art classes every year except one since then. She regretted not taking an art class that one year and the next year she took three to make up for it. She finds inspiration for her work from her peers because she likes to compare herself to others to see if she is on the same level as them. Sophie quotes “I do this because art is a competitive field and if you don’t give it your all, someone else will make a showing.” This type of attitude has made Sophie push herself harder and work to be a better well-rounded artist. When I was a kid, I tried every sport out there. I was in basketball, softball, and even gymnastics. From all those sports, excluding gymnastics, I realized that I do not enjoy the pressure of competing directly with another team. Because of that, I quit each of them after a year or two. Dance I continued throughout elementary school and until now. In middle school and high school I added other activities, like cheerleading, speech, show choir, and more.
When I was in the ninth grade when my choir teacher told me I had the vocal ability of a 20 year old. Because I was so young, the praise felt unreal. What ifs began to dreamily swirl in my head. Fantasy has always soared beyond sensibility for me, yet by being brought down to earth bit by bit I have learned a lot about myself and what is most important to me. Consequently, starting in the fall of ninth grade I began the struggle between my love of singing and my love of my religion.

In the beginning I had a hard time finding what topic to do because I don’t do many activities of things that relate to my life. I could only think about things with my family, but none have interesting questions. I eventually chose dance because there are many components of dance that I don’t even think about. I began to wonder; why dance? How does it benefit me?
As a child I always wanted to be in the spotlight. I was always the ham in family pictures, the one who had to excel past my brother, and be in the know of everything. When I was about twelve years old, I realized that entertaining people was what I was all about. Since I wasn’t any good at telling the jokes around the campfire or singing acappella, I thought about trying my dance skills. I liked dancing and I have always enjoyed music videos like Janet Jackson’s “Miss you much”, so I thought why not? What did I have to lose? With the support of my parents, particularly my mom, I went for the gusto.
