The article “Live and Learn” written by Louis Menand presents three different purposes of college. The first theory states that college is used as a sorting system to pick out the most intelligent students and use their potential. The second theory revolves around the idea that students are too focused on college and grades to the point where they lose their desire to learn and solely focus on the reward they believe college will bring them. Finally, the third theory is for students who want a vocational education due to the demand for specialized knowledge in our advancing economy. Despite how deeply this article explores these three theories, inconsistencies still exists within said theories. There are also many aspects of education that
During high school, whether it is by a teacher, parent or classmate a student will be advised to go to college. “College is where you find yourself,” they will say. College is made to seem as the place where students will attain a brilliant education, thus making them feel as though once they are done with the schooling, a dependable job of high pay will appear for them. In our society, college is not a scarce option, but rather, an expectation. For many graduating high schoolers, college is the next step. Attaining a college degree is not necessary for creating a life for us as our civilization makes it out to be.
As high school graduation approaches, millions of teenagers around the country are making a difficult choice between college and full-time employment. In Katherine Porter’s essay, The Value of a College Degree, she explains the importance of higher education. A college degree will guarantee a person's successful future, improve our economy, and send young adults into the world with excellent critical thinking skills. Adults returning to college will have the benefit of increased self-esteem, the ability to change professions, and future opportunities for advancement in their current careers.
People go to college for many reasons, such as getting a higher education, getting more job opportunities or to earn more money. but, college provides more than just that. College can help expand your understanding of the community as well as with the world. According to Melissa McCreery College’s mission is “to graduate students with integrity and a broad worldwide who will positively impact the planet and contribute to society.” College does this by providing a wide range of Liberal Arts classes. Which according to Robert Harris “teaches you how to think” and “allows you to see things whole.” Which in other words helps you to strengthen your mind, think for yourself and get a well-rounded education.
It should be a joint effort between higher education systems and school educators to inform the next generation of students on their available options for education; picking the right college is imperative for a student’s success. Noticeably, the primary goal of a university is to help students become educated. However, though academics is the way most colleges educate students, a lot of what a student can learn happens beyond the reading of a textbook. In conclusion, Hrabowski’s argument revolves around the view that college is an imperative tool for the preparation of life. Hrabowski makes a valid claim. In response to this argument, college not only prepares students for life, but more specifically college helps lead students to self-discovery and independence, a greater sense of time management, and improved communication

Charitable acts serve a purpose in society to aid a cause that will range from helping the poor to curing the ill. Having the incentive to commit charitable acts is to push people to contribute to society. Therefore, I believe, to better the society, that incentives to charitable acts are ethical.
