An Intense Learning Experience My semester of study abroad is best described as an intense learning experience, without which I feel that my education would have been incomplete. The lessons learned were far different from those I encountered in high school, but of equal or greater importance. I gained new perspective about international affairs and also found I was challenged as an individual to grow intellectually, socially, and emotionally. There is no doubt that this experience has changed me, and I am certainly better for it. The most obvious gain from my study abroad was the academic coursework for that semester. I studied Shakespeare in London, and was able to visit not only the Globe Theatre, but also parts of the city that existed during the Elizabethan period. Another course, which focused on the history of East End London, took us through the dynamic past of this problematic portion of the city, not just with texts, but walking tours through the East End. My theatre course likewise capitalized on the opportunities unique to London, incorporating nine of the several hundred shows that were running in the city throughout the spring semester. This course supplemented my internship experience, in which I took a part-time position at the Bridewell Theatre, and small fringe theatre in the heart of the city. The internship was the most beneficial component of the academic program, in that I was immersed in British culture through biweekly interaction (2 workdays) with the Bridewell staff. I was able to witness the inner-workings of its administration, and observe some of the problems facing London theatres in general. Outside the classroom, the study abroad experience provided for constant change and self-reflection. I learned to recognize my own hidden prejudices and confront them, as my beliefs were constantly challenged by experiences and people I encountered. For someone who had never traveled outside the United States, this experience led me to perceive my own nation in a different way, and to confront feelings of both pride and shame in my background. While a challenging and shocking change, this has led me to define and strengthen my beliefs and opinions while gaining a new understanding for different perspectives.
Enzymes are biological catalysts, which are proteins that help speed up chemical reactions. Enzymes use reactants, known as the substrates, and are converted into products. Through this chemical reaction, the enzyme itself is not consumed and can be used over and over again for future chemical reactions, but with the same substrate and product formed. Enzymes usually only convert specific substrates into products. Substrates bind to the region of an enzyme called the active site to form the enzyme/substrate complex. Guaiacol turns the solution brown in the presence of oxygen, so as the oxygen was given out from the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide the solution turned brownish which proved that the enzyme was reacting. In the first part of this experiment, the concentration of the enzyme was found. In four test-tubes, labelled A-D, each test-tubes were diluted starting from the the test-tube A which had 5ml enzyme stock solution. 1 ml of the enzyme was added to the test-tube B containing 4ml buffer, which was 1:5 dilution after the mixture. 1 ml of the solution from test-tube B was then added to test-tube C, which then had 1:25 dilution. The same procedure was repeated with test-tube D, which had 1:125 dilution. Then, nine test-tubes were taken, out of them one was blank. The rest eight test-tubes had different volumes of buffer, enzyme, hydrogen peroxide and guaiacol. Guaiacol is a dye used to determine the presence of oxygen, which turns the solution brown if oxygen is present. Mixtures of two test-tubes were added and labelled A-D accordingly. Gaining a new perspective of the world and an insight to different culture has allowed for a new sense of self, which I have sustained since being home, and in turn have become more resilient to change. Exposure to a new cultural context created challenges that threatened aspects of my existing identity and created possibilities to discover parts of a new identity that I had previously not been in touch with.

The number of students studying abroad is increasing every year. Most countries have scholarships. “In 2012, 764,495 international students studied in the United States. In every country they have students studying abroad. “50.5% of undergraduate students study abroad” (Holland). College time is the time to learn in a different style than high school. When a student goes to a different country, he or she experiences different lifestyle, rules and people than usual, and that helps the student learn new things and make new friends. Leaving the country to learn a different education is a great idea. It has its issues, but studying abroad absolutely has more positives. Students cannot only learn from an academic, but they can also get life experiences and self-development.
When I was in high school, I dreamed of studying abroad. I have always wanted to be independent and explore the unknown on my own which gives me the opportunity to gain precious experience and knowledge. Besides that, I want to be more serious in learning about myself and improving myself especially in decision-making to solve new problems, doing everything on my own as well as discover my new abilities and strengths which are vital for my personal development. Being immersed and exposed to new culture and being surrounded by many other international students from all around the world will open a new horizon for me to experience. Exploring and learning many cultures and different lifestyles at the same time will help me improve my communication skills. Studying abroad would be a precious and unique opportunity for me as I will be able to pursue a world standard education.
I used to be the person who would stick with a small circle of friends, but after traveling to Europe, I realized that being abroad is a great way to open my mind, to listen to different voices, and to learn from all kinds of interesting ideas. Last summer I spent one month in Europe with other high school students who were from Los Angles, Tennessee, and Guam. From my last travel experience, I learned a lot more about myself and also, more importantly, about friendship and personal connections, because of the unique places in which we spent exploring. That month living abroad was a meaningful experience, because it allowed me to adapt to things that were unfamiliar and unusual. Therefore, now I have a strong desire to explore European counties more and I believe that a study abroad experience could let me acquire greater knowledge and understanding of the foreign cultures.
