In the novel The Great Gatsby, The major theme is the collapse of the American dream. The American Dream consisted of money, lots of money. The Quote, "Her voice is full of money," is said about Daisy by Gatsby. To me this means that she has been raised rich and will always remain rich, which is the American dream. Gatsby believes that Daisy's voice is full of money and that is very addicting to him. It is the reason he is so attached to her, she is Mr. Gatsby's American dream. Like all people, Gatsby tries to grasp this American dream and to do that he has to convince Daisy that she should be his, if he could accomplish this task, then he could achieve this dream, but what happens if he does accomplish this and is still not happy. If Gatsby had money, Daisy and her voice full of money, and everything else he wanted, would that crush the American Dream. Could it be that the reason the American dream was dying is because they based it all on material objects and not on honesty, trust, and love? In the 1920's, the era was full of greediness, dishonesty, cynicism, and empty pursuit of happiness. How could anyone even trust their own spouse, you would have to be worrying about them all the time and you would be sceptical of everything they did. Everyone would be out for themselves, so no one could even try to make another happy because they would be too worried about themselves to care about others dreams and happiness. Perhaps if they had of restored the original American dream, then it would have turned out a lot better. The original dream was discovery, individualism, and the pursuit of happiness. This original dream probably would have made almost everyone happy even the poor people because other wealthier people might help them out, instead of being greedy like in the corrupted dream. Also, I believe that not as many people would have died in this novel if the American dream was the original and not the corrupted, evil dream of the 1920's. So, the quote, "Her voice is full of money," is referring to the corrupt dream the world conformed to in the 1920's. The quote, "Suppose you meet someone just as careless as yourself?
During the time in our country's history called the roaring twenties, society had a new obsession, money. Just shortly after the great depression, people's focus now fell on wealth and success in the economic realm. Many Americans would stop at nothing to become rich and money was the new factor in separation of classes within society. Wealth was a direct reflection of how successful a person really was and now became what many people strived to be, to be rich. Wealth became the new stable in the "American dream" that people yearned and chased after all their lives. In the novel entitled the great Gatsby, the ideals of the so called American dream became skewed, as a result of the greediness and desires of the main characters to become rich and wealthy. These character placed throughout the novel emphasize the true value money has on a persons place in society making wealth a state of mind.
Indeed, not only does it represent the shortcomings of his American Dream, but it is also used as a commentary on the motivations behind his dreams, motivations shared by many characters in the book. Indeed, Gatsby really believes throughout the story that the more possessions he has, the better are his chances of getting Daisy to love him back. Having eyes only for her, he quickly becomes disillusioned. Ultimately, him and the wealthiest characters demonstrates an erroneous perception that money creates happiness, partly caused by the omnipresence of materialist and consumerist ideologies of the 1920s.
