Sometimes in life, things are said and done that we may not agree with or believe in, therefore we must respect other opinions while also standing up for our beliefs. Colin Kaepernick made a bold move as he sat during the national anthem in order to stand up for his beliefs. Many professional athletes, out of fear, would not be brave enough to stand out like Kaepernick did considering their playing time may be destroyed. Kaepernick, on the other hand, made an audacious decision to do what was required in order to make a change and may be suffering some consequences of his decision. Although some do not agree with Kaepernick’s belief, many still support his decision to kneel during the national anthem for the reason that he was simply doing what he believed was right, which is what most are taught to do. In “In the ‘land of the free,’ are you free to sit out the national anthem?” Drew Brees, the quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, accuses Kaepernick of insulting a flag that is “Sacred” and also gives him the “freedom to speak out”(Kaleem). In other words, Kaepernick is disrespecting his rights and taking advantage of a sacred flag that represents our country, which is one of the most humiliating things done toward the country. Critics have a valid point about disrespect toward the country and the flag because we stand for the national anthem to show respect to the veterans that risked their lives for our freedom, so not standing could be dishonorable and offensive toward soldiers and veterans. Though it is true that veterans may take offense to his actions, they must understand that Kaepernick is only standing up for his beliefs that the flag does not represent what it should and the country does not represent the people the way it should, and he should not be punished or looked down upon for showing what he
