Throughout their career, Coldplay have continued to develop their sound whilst staying grounded and in touch with the world around them. Over almost the past two decades Coldplay has been taking the world by storm with their music reaching all corners of the world, Coldplay have a very diverse range of fans and followers aiding in their ever-increasing involvement in issues affecting a broad majority of the world. It wasn’t until bass player, Guy Berryman, joined the band that the group started going by Coldplay1. The band released three EPs, the first known as ‘Safety’ was released in 1998 with only 500 copies made from which the majority went to record companies and family and friends, only 50 were made available for public purchase. In 1999 Coldplay signed with Fierce Panda and went on to record and release their second EP ‘Brothers and Sisters’ in February of that year. Their third EP ‘The Blue Room’ was recorded and released with their new label Parlophone, with whom they signed a 5-album contract with , and released 5000 copies of the EP in October 1999 with only one of their songs making BBC1 radio. However, in 2000 the release of their first album ‘Parachutes’ swept the UK off their feet. With “distorted guitar riffs” and “swishing percussion" the album debuted at number one on the UK Album Charts and led to the band attaining awards for Best British Group, and Best British Album at the Brit Awards in February 2001. ‘Parachutes’ also eventually reached double-platinum status and
