Wein’s novel Code Name Verity. At first, we see nothing matters to the main character, Verity. If nothing matters why do anything at all? This is the question that Verity(Julia) wrestled with in the book Code Name Verity. The story follows the main character, a British spy by the code name of Verity, after she is captured by the Nazis during the war. Verity chronicles her stay in the hotel that is converted into a prison. She also uses the paper and pen that the Gestapo gave her in order to reveal the codes and information that the Nazis want on Allied aircrafts, airbases, and other information. Despite Verity denying the odds many times she still proves that.. Friendships at first sight means a friend will strengthen you with their prayers, bless you with their love, and encourage you with their hope. Verity goes from being a girl who grew up in a castle, Castle Craig. To an officer in the military when she meets Maddie at an airfield where they are both assigned. When Verity and Maddie first meet they clicked like that! “It’s like being in love, discovering your best friend.”(Wein 20) The book also writes that “They became friends instantly.”(Wein 23). “You’ll kill me no matter what I do because the story can only last so long. And when it ends, they’ll kill me” (Wein 5). She is scared, the fear of death and what they will do to her takes over. “I can smell the kerosene, or paraffin at home. They use it to execute prisoners by pouring some down their throat and holding a match to their lips.” (Wein 10). The paper and pen, the symbol of Verity’s protection, cause both good and bad experiences, but in the end the paper and pen gets Verity away, so far away she can never go
