The movie Cocoon is about life: relationships, aging, decisions and acceptance. It focuses on a group of lovable aging misfits living in Sunny Shores Retirement Home who seem to have gotten the message that friendship, love, comradery and helping others is the key to sanity in old age. Although they each endure age related maladies, three of the men sneak in to a neighboring pool for casual swims to relive the youthful mischief associated with teenagers. Arthur, Ben and Joe notice strange, giant pod formations on the pool’s bottom one day but, swim anyway. Suddenly their aging bodies feel better, have more strength and energy; they feel more like their younger selves, even turning up the romance with their wives. Little do they know aliens …show more content…
When invited for a swim in the rejuvenating pool, he begrudgingly “trespasses” but, refuses to take a dip despite the raucous fun his friends are enjoying with newfound vigor. He is afraid to change his destiny, not wanting to go against nature. In truth it seems that he is resigned to his life as it is and is afraid of what changes to the status quo might bring. He, most likely, was a conformist his whole life, sacrificing excitement and fun fearing judgement meanwhile judging those who throw caution to the wind. In looking at Bernie’s personality and resignation to age as he was intended, his decision is sound. It fits his morals and concepts of right and …show more content…
David, Ben and Mary Luckett’s grandson, who is devoted and close to them, escapes to the boat they are leaving on to join them. I believe David should have been returned because he is still quite young and needs his mother as well as time to grow from his current adolescent self to the man he will eventually become on Earth. It would be unfair that he never experiences the joys and pains of physical and emotional growth, development of who you want to become and who will be your friends and lovers in life. It would be terribly dishonorable to take him to Antarea without his mother Susan’s permission. It would be morally wrong to deny a parent access to her child, so taking him away to their nuclear family and his development. We could however, make a case for the benefits of him escaping with the elderly people; eternal life with the grandparents he loves so much. What is life like with the aliens? Perhaps it is filled with beauty, love, good health, happiness and adventure. Maybe they never experience betrayal, sadness, illness, depression, loss of agency or have need to worry about money; could it be like Heaven? I am somewhat torn but must look at the simple facts that David leaving would amount to a parent whose child is snatched from their lives; that lives with a hole in their
After the official adoption, David and Dennis have a major conflict as Dennis reveals he pretended to give up being form Mars so David could adopt him. Eventually, David realizes that he cannot conform his son to the person he wants him to be, but love what makes him different. However, Dennis believes David has rejected him as the other adults have and runs away. Later, Dennis is finally able to verbalize his mistrust and deep fear of rejection, and David is able to convince him that he will never reject or leave him.
David Hayden, the son of Wesley and Gail, was the most loyal character in the book. One day David noticed Uncle frank walking out of the house in the middle of the day. David was an intelligent young boy who knew that something was off. Later that day David heard the news that Marie Little Soldier had died and it was not of natural causes. Guilt comes with loyalty. When a person witnesses a scene that was unlawful they are put into the middle of a paradigm. In this case, David, who knew Uncle Frank killed Marie, felt he was the only witness. For a twelve year old boy, David knew himself very well. He was able to find that his loyalty was to Marie and the rest of the family. Although David knew where his loyalty was he was sure that not everyone did know. "I wasn't protecting her-I no longer had any illusions that I could play that role-but I stayed out of loyalty.”(149). In spite of the fact that David had already designated his Loyalty to his family, he felt his loyalty was tested during the investigation. Davids instincts told him that the right thing to do was superset his father, but with his mother encouraging him to abandon his father, David felt he should neglect his instincts. For example, when the four men were sent by his grandfather to retrieve Unc...
The movie Night John was incredible with its expression of such realistic telling of slave lives and the passion they had to be free. The movie which centers on the young Sarnay from birth through an amazing journey of learning to read. John is the Harriet Tubman of the movie standing as more of mythical figure rather than just a man. He was bent on freeing other slaves so much he returned from the North to help others see the light. In my opinion the light, or freedom, that John was trying to bring and instill was that of knowledge and the power that could arise from this knowledge without fear of the consequences. He uses a pupil to instill power, but also confidence to stand up and want more freedom. After being showed how to read there
At first, David cares that his mother treats him badly. After awhile, he doesn’t care and becomes apathetic.
5. I think that the difference between 30 years ago and now is that it could be stopped now. David could have been taken from his mother to live somewhere else because she was not a fit parent. He could have lived with his father.
Child abuse was still on the verge of emerging like mental illness, there were no laws or rights being enforced to protect those against neglect or abuse. Furthermore, all the marks that were present of David’s body had to be cause by more than he was admitting being no one else witnessed the abuse. For instance, when Catherine tried to have David eat the defecated diaper, the abuse stopped when Ron, Stan, and David 's father came back to the vacation cabin (Pelzer, 1995, pp. 57). It was a risky long drawn out rescue mission, but if Catherine had assumed a social case was being built on David’s behalf she may have killed him before he had a chance to realize it. I could not envision myself in a situation of that nature, yet as a person concerned about the well-being of a child, I would have done my own personal questioning to David. I understand teachers have to adhere to protocol, but if you notice everyday your student smells or looks unhealthy, you have to investigate as too why, especially if the mother looks glamorous during a parent teacher conference while the child dresses like a hobo. You may want to question why? Stephen, David 's father was the main person in authority with an opportunity to prevent maltreatment. David 's father stood by watching his son use a five-gallon bucket to relieve his diarrhea. When David was forced to eat
The first issue that is a major concern in the novel, is the torture and abuse towards David, and other members in the novel. Every minute in the United States, children are physically and sexually abused, murdered, maimed, and emotionally scarred. David, the narrator of the novel, has encountured this abuse more than once. David is tortured numorous times, by his father, Joseph Strorm. This brutality would continue, until Mr. Strorm received the information he demanded. It would continue on for hours, until David could not handle it anymore, until the answers Joseph Strorm wanted, were beaten out of of him. No child, anywhere in the world, should have to experience such cruelty. Over 67% of children with disabilities are induced by physical abuse. These numbers are very shocking, but what is every more unbelievalbe is the fact that these children are suffering in...
David growing up as a child lived in a house where there was no love shown or caring relationships. He grew up not knowing what good relationships looked like or felt like. David did not think too highly of his dad or aunt and always had
Another powerful video, Including Samuel, ignited my insight in this week’s class. As I heard in the video, “inclusion is an easy thing to do poorly.” The movie chronicles the life of a young boy, Samuel, and his family. With the shock of learning about their son’s disability, it caused his parents, Dan and Betsy, to experience the unexpected. Nevertheless, they did everything to include their son and help him live a normal life focused on his capabilities, rather than his incapabilities. I even admired how his friends knew so much about him, his likes and dislikes, his strengths and his weaknesses.
Ageism is all too common in films. While there are still so many movies packed with stereotypes that view aging as negative, there is a recent movie, which portrayed aging positively in some aspects, the movie ‘The Second Best Marigold Hotel’. While this movie does contain stereotypes and humor about aging, it also shows the visitors leading active, happy, free and independent lives. They are not portrayed as being sick or frail, but instead they are embracing life and their experiences regardless of their age.
In the film Babies there are four babies from four different cultural backgrounds, languages and socioeconomic statuses. While each babies’ development is different, they have one thing in common, they nurtured by those around them. The first baby is Ponijao who is the youngest of nine children from the village of Namibia, South Africa; baby Baya from Mongolia, East Asia; Hattie Bradshaw from San Francisco, California in the United States, and Mari from Tokyo, Japan.
Ever since I was little I remember playing games where I would fight the bad guy and win the girl in the end. This never seem to affect me or make me wonder what small effect it had on my thought process. In games such as Zelda, call of duty, assassin creed, gears of war, Mario, and even halo you play as a white heterosexual male. The idea of playing this way never seemed to phase me as a young child. As I grew up and became more aware of the difference of people and the need for other as well as myself a need to be able to connect and find one 's self in different place such as games, movies, and TV shows. I became aware of the one sided views that video games seem to have. Then I realized that it was seen as acceptable to only have the one sided displayed due to the lack of speaking out on the need for change.
I spent the afternoon revisiting the movie Stepmom starring Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts. When the movie first was released, it was Christmas 1998. I was the stepmother to 2 stepdaughters and one stepson. In addition, I had added to our brood by becoming a biological mom to a daughter (3 years) and a baby boy (4 months). I had the crazy notion that maybe this would be a perfect movie for me to see with my two stepdaughters, Danielle and Nicole over the Christmas break from school. Both resisted, and I recall that I never did see the movie in the theaters. I ended up renting it and watching it alone on VHS several months later.

Do not believe something when you know it is not correct. Even though people may have good intentions most of the time there are those are out to harm you. Take this story of a man named Edward Daniels (also known as Teddy). In the movie Shutter Island, directed by Marin Scorsese in 2010. Teddy is a Us Marshal with a lost soul and a daunting past. Teddy is a World War I vet, who has a lot of flash backs, and nightmares about his past. Teddy meets up with his new partner, Chuck Aula, on the ferry ride to the island. This was the first time Teddy had met Chuck. Right in the beginning you can tell there is something off about the whole situation. Why would Teddy Barely meet his new partner on the ferry, I would think they would have met at the
