Throughout the film, we see that Heather is thrown into the middle of a battle between her parents and her grandparents. Heathers parents do not want her to receive the cochlear implant, whereas her grandparents think it would be a great idea. With little information at the time being known about these implants, and with Heather being so young, she did not have much of a say when it came to her perspective of receiving it. One thing Heather made clear though, is that she wanted to hear. However, Heather was not aware of the benefits and disadvantages of this implant, and was making her decision solely on the fact that she wanted to be able to hear the sounds we take for granted each and every day. Chris’s family, however, has opted to give their deaf son, Peter, a cochlear implant against the wishes of Mari’s Deaf parents and the Deaf community around them who feels it as wrong. Peter and Mari wish to give their deaf son the same opportunities as their hearing child because they are twins. Peter’s family investigates more about the cochlear implant by visiting families who have opted to give their children cochlear implants, but also go and visit the Maryland School for the Deaf to explore all sides of the argument. All the while, Heather’s father is against the idea, Heather’s mother is supportive at first but then changes her mind. Heather's grandparents are both hearings. They do love their sons and the grandchildren and are very involved in their lives. They devote lots of time to their family especially Heather. The grandmother often describes sounds to Heather, explaining how wonderful they are. Both of Peter's parents and Heather grandparents want Heather to receive the cochlear implant. They view Peter's inability to hear and thus speak clearly as a handicap. They insist that Heather receives the implant, so that she might hear and speak and lead a life in the hearing world. They view Peter's and his wife's resistance to doing so as abusive to Heather. They view Peter's and his wife's insistence that Heather remains deaf and continues using sign language as unfair to Heather, depriving her of the many opportunities the hearing world has to offer. They feel that Heather if she remains deaf, and continues using only the sign language will be deprived of the opportunity to fully develop her talents and to live a "normal," happy, productive, full of possibilities life as a hearing person.
What I found most interesting about Jarashow’s presentation were the two opposing views: Deaf culture versus medical professionals. Within the Deaf culture, they want to preserve their language and identity. The Deaf community wants to flourish and grow and do not view being deaf as a disability or being wrong. Jarashow stated that the medical field labels Deaf people as having a handicap or being disabled because they cannot hear. Those who are Deaf feel as though medical professionals are trying to eliminate them and relate it to eugenics. It is perceived that those in that field are trying to fix those who are Deaf and eliminate them by making them conform to a hearing world. Cochlear implants are amazing feats of biomedical engineering, and have helped many people regain the ability to hear. While there are some ethical dilemmas that go along with them, there is no denying just how amazing these implants really are. By understanding how the ear works, what causes it to stop working, and using science and engineering to fix that problem, there is now a way to give someone a sense they might have never been able to experience. It can be costly, but it could drastically change someone’s life. Some people may say for worse, but there will always be someone else to say it was for better. Overall, cochlear implants are an incredible invention and will continue to grow and only get better with technology.

Many individuals have different views surrounding cochlear implants. Most of the Deaf community tends to be against them whereas most of the hearing community tends to be in favor of them. It is important to understand not only want a cochlear implant is, but how the different communities view the implants so that we can gain a better understanding of Deaf culture.
According to Deaf culture, getting a cochlear could be considered a rejection of the great society they love while at the same time it doesn’t making you a normal hearing person either. To get a cochlear is to say that you are “fixing” your deafness, something that Deaf consider make them unique, not broken. The Deaf culture spurns cochlear implants because not only is it incredibly expensive and fairly dangerous procedure, but it’s also giving in to the pressures from the hearing majority to give up their Deaf pride and adhere to the hearing society they exist inside of.
A cochlear implant is a small, complex electronic device that can help to provide a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly Deaf or severely hard-of-hearing. The implant consists of an external portion that sits behind the ear and a second portion that is surgically placed under the skin. Usually, Deaf people are against the implant, because it would destroy the unique characteristic of themselves. Another point is that, the implant does not restore normal hearing. Instead, it can give a Deaf person only a representation of sounds in the environment and help him or her to understand the speech. Of course, the implant can change lives, but it is an individual choice. If a Deaf person does not want it, the decision must be respected. Audists feel that they have to force cochlear implants on Deaf people regardless of whenever they want it or not. Why would someone prefer to stay deaf? Simple: Members of the Deaf culture do not see themselves as disabled, and resent any discrimination or inference that they are disadvantaged. Cochlear implants can affect many children from the age after birth to twelve. This implant does affect children emotionally. Infants to toddlers don’t even know what is going on, they are to young to understand that they are deaf. Parents not accepting the fact their child is deaf and does not want to be part of the hearing world. The medical field is notorious for providing cures to deafness, such as cochlear implants, which then leads people to believe that it is something that must be fixed and therefore labels deafness as a disability. While Tina Gianoulis was comparing the similarities between Queer and Deaf experiences in her article mentioned earlier she declares that, “most painfully, both groups have traditionally been forced to try to become “normal”. In my life, I've had a major setback that has changed how I live life day to day. When I was five, I was diagnosed with permanent hearing loss. I have hearing loss in both ears, mostly in higher frequencies, but I still have some hearing loss in the lower ones too. Since I was 5, it has only gotten worse, just in the past year there has been drastic changes in the frequencies that I can't hear. Hearing loss affects me day to day, for example if anyone whispers something to me, nine of ten times I can't hear what they are saying. My academics also get affected because sometimes I can't hear what we have for homework over all of the background noise of people packing up, so sometimes I just don't do homework because I never heard it in the first place. Not doing homework because I can't hear it affects my grades as I will get zeros for not doing it.
Hearing loss is often overlooked because our hearing is an invisible sense that is always expected to be in action. Yet, there are people everywhere that suffer from the effects of hearing loss. It is important to study and understand all aspects of the many different types and reasons for hearing loss. The loss of this particular sense can be socially debilitating. It can affect the communication skills of the person, not only in receiving information, but also in giving the correct response. This paper focuses primarily on hearing loss in the elderly. One thing that affects older individuals' communication is the difficulty they often experience when recognizing time compressed speech. Time compressed speech involves fast and unclear conversational speech. Many older listeners can detect the sound of the speech being spoken, but it is still unclear (Pichora-Fuller, 2000). In order to help with diagnosis and rehabilitation, we need to understand why speech is unclear even when it is audible. The answer to that question would also help in the development of hearing aids and other communication devices. Also, as we come to understand the reasoning behind this question and as we become more knowledgeable about what older adults can and cannot hear, we can better accommodate them in our day to day interactions.
