The United States Coast Guard does not provide adequate personal financial training to the workforce, resulting in members making poor monetary decisions. Most of our members are living paycheck to paycheck and are stressed out about their financial situation. Why is this? Is it because the members just don’t care or because they don’t know the proper way of managing their money. I would say that it is the latter of the two. A workforce that is stressed out about how the next bill will be paid is a workforce that can’t fully concentrate on the U.S Coast Guard missions. There are so many benefits of having personal financial training taught to the workforce such as better productivity, less stress medical related costs and better decision making. …show more content…
The amount of time a member spends worrying about their financial situation during the work day is staggering. “29 percent of American full-time workers recently said they spend time dealing with their personal finances during work hours, and of those, 46% spend an average of 2-3 hours per week at work dealing with their financial issues” (Full time employees worry about their personal finances, 2013). What can be done to ensure that members of the U.S. Coast Guard are being more productive during the workday and are accomplishing the missions safely. We often worry about living a better healthy lifestyle but what about our financial health? Personal financial training can give the members the tools they need to live debt free and be more productive in the workplace. Training gives members the knowledge to be successful, and with knowledge comes power to take action and change things …show more content…
Coast Guard are trusted with different responsibilities such as being purchase card holders, travel card holders and etc. Why do we see people abuse and inappropriately use these cards? I don’t believe that these members are doing this on purpose. I believe the member has become so desperate to get out of their situation that they make a decision to use the government card the incorrect way because they see that as their only option. There is something seriously wrong with this picture. I personally know high performing members from all paygrades and ranks that have used the cards inappropriately and were punished for their actions. I agree that the members have to be held accountable, but I also believed it could have been avoided in the first place. We need to give the members the tools they need, and in this case its personal financial
Abrashoff begins the book by informing the reader of how his story begins; when he is given command of the USS Benfold. The Benfold was the Navy’s most advanced guided missile destroyer the Navy had in 1997 and its command was to be one of the Navy’s top innovators. Unfortunately, Abrashoff points out some flaws with the Navy’s personnel management that I found to be shocking. First, was that “nearly 35 percent of the people who joined the military annually, wouldn’t complete their enlistment contracts.” (p.2) Such turnover can be understood by many business managers in the service industry, but unlike the quick and cheap training process for them, the cost for the military (taxpayers) is astounding. Abrashoff estimates that it cost roughly “$35,000 to recruit a trainee and tens of thousands more in additional training costs to get new personnel to the basic level of proficiency.” (p.2) Curbing this trend on his own ship and eventually helping to achieve a decrease overall in the mil...
One reason people think this is because “younger people that are enlisted in the military are not wise with their money they earn”, (debate.org, 2017). People may think this because some people that come out of the military are homeless because they are not used to having benefits after they are out so they tend to spend more. This statement is false because the military is trained to use their money properly just as they trained to do other things such as protecting the United States and other countries.
The US Navy has founded its self with being an organization that will train and activate skilled combat naval personnel. The official mission statement taken off their web site states, “The mission of the Navy is to maintain, train and equip combat-ready naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas.” (http://www.navy.com) The Navy also prides itself on the adventurous spirit it takes to embark on a career in the navy. The slogan used in getting new recruits is “Accelerate your life“. These statements suggest that the Navy is not only clear in its purpose and design, but also dedicated to its end. The clarity of its mission is seen in the extensive training that recruits receive in boot camp and the mental focus directed by their superiors to focus on the mission statement. In recruitment, the Navy seeks young men and women, often bogged down with school and jobs that to an eighteen or nineteen year old seems to be boring and slow paced.
Sequestration is a relatively new challenge for the United States Government and the Department of the Navy more specifically; the seeds of it being sown a little over five years ago through the great recession. As a result of the recession, the Tea Party, a more deficit conscious fiscal conservative wing of the Republican Party, was formed. This new group then railroaded the br...
I had a hearty breakfast, a badly needed shower, and donned my service dress khaki’s for the first time. I proceeded to the ceremony site where I was joined by my wife, family and friends. The ceremony progressed, niceties were said by many, and the Commanding Officer stressed “the importance of role of a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy”. Finally, the time came to don the anchors of a Chief Petty Officer. My wife, along with my sponsor, joined me on stage to pin the coveted anchors on my collars and don the combination cover of a
For generations, working on the water allowed some leeway for social mobility and the income eventually made educational pursuits possible. Although many of my forebears were not very educated, they recognized that sustainability and sufficiency tread a careful balance, and that this particular marine environment was integral to their identities and survival. Like them, I acknowledge that marine [environments] are essential and must be carefully managed and studied in order to promote the mores of sustainability and sufficiency. And because of them, I also recognize the importance of protecting those that venture out on the water. Due to these perspectives, I believe the Coast Guard’s many missions are incredibly impactful and are closely tied to my own aspirations, studies, and
In conclusion, the ability for sailors to better their career has been taken out of their hands, and relies too much on external entities. Advancement is not based on one’s abilities to excel at his or her job, but by hoping they earn more money for the commands Navy Day Ball, they must have faith that the standardized test will cover their job field, and that the writing ability of their superiors is good enough to keep them competitive. Once these aspects under the advancement criteria are changed, the navy as a whole will start seeing more effective leaders who understands their jobs, understand their people, and more closely reflect the ideals and traits required in today’s leaders.
Sergeant Perfetto also mentioned that there a lot of rules that comes being part of the navy. Also Combat Crillo mentioned to me that “ Yes, discipline is key on the military. Everything we do is professional, uniform appearance clean shave and haircut at all times.” They develop self control, character, and efficiency while being in the military which becomes a life skill later on for
Everyone knows the dangers of being in the military, many military members put their lives on the line every day. Which makes them some of the most underpaid people in America. One the other hand there are many benefits military members enjoy that many people don’t consider. Military members receive tax free housing and food allowances, free health care, access to high tech training and other educational benefits.
-Training: understanding the job well enough to know who to hire and how well they are doing.
To combat these and other issues that can arise due to a lack of training, the development of a training program will wan...
General Quarters with my Sailors! As Sailor in a leadership position I have to be able to let our sailors know what is expected of them; to question, clarify, or inform them of what is expected of them. My first goal is to continue to grow as a listener. Communication requires two individuals in order to be successful, and at bare minimum I am communicating, as well as, listening to at least fifteen Sailor’s a day. Because listening is so crucial to effective communication, I need to and want to learn more about it. We have a saying in the Navy “A bitching sailor is a happy sailor” and for the most part, it is a pretty accurate statement. One thing that I can say is that sailors like to be heard. Dianne Schilling in an article for Forbes Magazine (2012) wrote, “At work, ...
Therefore, the cost of living is drastically reduced, a much needed benefit for the graduating high school student. Because of the great service that the military provides, service members are granted drastically reduced retirement plans. After a life of serving America, it is imperative that these soldiers and individuals are taken care of properly in their old age.
If a person has not learned how to manage their time, they are also likely to lack financial success. Time that is spent doing nothing, only takes time away from which you can be doing something to improve yourself and your financial status. Also, people who lack financial success, have a lack of foresight. Achievers can look beyond the immediate and into the future. It is important to weigh t...
