What does success mean to you? Coach John Wooden reminds us all of what it takes to succeed, on and off the court. Here are Coach Wooden’s Eight Suggestions for Succeeding: 1. Listen. Valvano gave a speech at the 1993 ESPY awards in which he depicted his ideas of leadership. He stated that leaders need a vision. He said that in one practice every year he would have the players practice on how they would act when they win. He did not say if they win, he said when they win. Valvano was giving his players a vision. They had something to believe in and play for. They were not playing just to look good and move on to the professional level. They were playing to win a national championship. Valvano envisioned an idea for his team and his team bought into that vision. He also taught that leaders need to connect with their followers. Valvano stated that he often would randomly call his players into his office just to chat with them. He wanted them to feel comfortable with him. They did not just talk about basketball, they could talk about anything. Valvano’s followers, in this case his players, were comfortable with him and they trusted him. They had no doubt when it came to their leader. Valvano fully understood the value of connection. He also taught that leaders learn from their followers. In Valvano’s final speech he talked about the four things that the 1983 national championship team taught him. They taught him hope, dreaming, persistence, and love. The NBA is well known for the number of amazing professional athletes it has had over the years. Some of the most gifted and talented individuals come through the NBA and one of the better-known superstars is none other than Kobe Bryant. For years people have wondered what makes Bryant so successful. The main contributors that lead to Kobe Bryant’s success is his hard work and dedication, his mindset, his natural ability’s and talent, and the people that have helped him throughout his life. Kobe Bryant was very successful in the NBA because of the amount of hard work he has put in, the people in his life, his relentless determination and his god given natural abilities.
There are two shades of blue that rule the basketball courts in and around Durham, North Carolina. Both are perennially the best in the ACC and are fierce rivals. The head coaches of both teams are great leaders on the basketball court and in the game of life. In addition, they are able to manage multimillion dollar budgets and maintain the ultra positive image of their players and their respective school.

Knowing the background of Coach Wooden’s playing and coaching career plays a significant role in understanding how he practiced his beliefs with his teams and how his philosophy and success intertwined to set a precedent for the remainder of collegiate basketball.

The book “Leading with the Heart,” is one about leadership, how you earn it, how you practice it, and how you are to use it to make your organization a successful one. Coach K talks about the importance of trust, communication, pride, and the commitment the leader of an organization must have to make his team. He goes on to state that “leadership is ongoing, adjustable, flexible and dynamic. Leaders must stay on their toes, being that anything can occur during the year. A proper coaching philosophy contains principles which improve character development, teach step by step tactical and technical skills, form proper progressive physical training regimens, and carefully utilize team management to handle and control problems with administrative issues. A coach with a sound philosophy should mold a team with strong cohesion, and he should treat players not only as teammates, but as family and friends who are encouraged to develop communication and lifelong learning of skills through positive support and role modeling from the coach (Mergelsberg, 14-15). The philosophy should also contain written documents of implemented strategies and techniques, so that the coach will know what to improve upon season by season

Everyone wants to get better at something, but some want it more than others. In “How to Transform an Everyday, Ordinary Hoop Court into a Place of Higher Learning and You at the Podium”, the narrator wants to get better at basketball, so he wakes up everyday at 4:30 to go with his dad to his work. Everyday, the narrator would wait 3 hours in his dad’s car until the gym opened, only to sit on the bench and watch the other men play basketball. Finally, one of the best players, Dante, tells the narrator he can play but he’ll get “smoked”. However, the narrator proved him wrong. “Life is like a basketball, it bounces up and down.” I love basketball. I feel affection for the taste of victory, when you win a game. However, I also find losing a worthwhile experience. I worship the feeling where you score a point. It’s slow motion at first, as you gaze at the shot you’ve made, wondering if it is going to manage. Then the taste of your salty sweat and the sound of your pounding heart are back in action. *Swoosh* the ball rapidly swirls into the hoop and falls through the net. It is so stunning, and so breath-taking. “Beautiful shot! BEAUTIFUL!” the coach would yell. Everyone would give a little cheer, and I would smile and look down. I am proud to make the shot, but not cocky about it. It’s for the team, teamwork… I would think in my head. Afterwards, I would be focusing on how to get my head completely into the game, that’s how addicting it is.
