Cloud Seeding
Have you ever wondered how it may suddenly start raining or snowing and then stop almost as quick as it started? It may have more to do with chemistry and less to do with nature than you think. One major way that researchers have found out how to do this is through cloud seeding. Some people say that cloud seeding is harmful, while others say that it helps because of environmental factors like droughts. Cloud seeding has many factors involved in the process, including different chemicals and delivery methods.
According to weatherquestions.com “Cloud seeding is the process of spreading either dry ice, or more commonly, silver iodide aerosols, into the upper part of clouds to try to stimulate the precipitation process and form rain. Since most rainfall starts through the growth of ice crystals from super-cooled cloud droplets (droplets colder than the freezing point, 32 deg. F or 0 deg. C) in the upper parts of clouds, the silver iodide particles are meant to encourage the growth of new ice particles.”(What is cloud seeding?) This means that they are using chemicals to stimulate the water into falling. There are three different types of cloud seeding that scientist use. These are static cloud seeding, dynamic cloud seeding and hygroscopic cloud seeding.
The first type of cloud seeding is called static cloud seeding. This is when a chemical called Silver Iodide is shot into the cloud causing it to precipitate. According to How Stuff Works “The silver iodide provides a crystal around which moisture can condense. So in conclusion, whether the rain and snow is caused by nature or a man-made chemical compound we may never know for sure. There are many different ways that scientists and researchers go about causing the precipitation, and many more to come. Some feel that trying to play god and use chemicals to change the weather is wrong. They also feel that it is hazardous to the Earth and its inhabitants, while others look forward to the giant leaps that being able to manipulate the weather will allow. Cloud seeding is a very complex process involving many different chemical compounds and process with more to come.
Rain can sometimes have a symbolic meaning. It can be shown as something pure or the washing away of someone's wrong doings. On the other hand snow can be seen as something different. Wether it's cold and inhuman and stark. However it can also be seen as pure.

There are numerous stages that take place simultaneously in the hydrologic cycle and this includes evaporation. This is when the water alters from a liquid state into a gas. The damp air from the water rises into the atmosphere and when it cools, the vapor condenses and shapes into clouds. But those billows are not the only form the vapors make; it can also materialize as dew, fog and mist, which blanket the Earth, characteristically on a rainy or humid day. Evaporation takes place when water changes from a liquid state into a gaseous state, and ascents out of the pores of the earth and into the atmosphere as a vapor (“How”). While evaporation is taking place, condensation is also occurring. When the temperature in the air plunges, the clouds become heavy and as a result they relieve themselves of the extra weight, which is called precipitation. This produces rain, hail, snow and sleet, conditioned upon the temperate. As the precipitation falls, it enters the surface of the ground and percolates into the soil, which is called infiltration. The more porous the land is, the more the infiltration can take place. However, the ground cannot hold all of that water and floods. The excess rainfall, which is also called runoff that has not been absorbed makes its way into bodies of water, such as small ponds, rivers, lakes and parts of the ocean (“Summary”).
Scientists have been studying the chemistry of the rain and they've discovered that while the deposition of sulfuric acid has decreased in the last two years, the deposition of nitric acid has increased. This means that the acidity of the rainfall hasn't really changed.
Cloud Atlas is a very complex movie that involves rotating and revolving characters and story lines which paint a past, present, and future of the Earth. All of these are interconnected and influenced by one another with a continuing constant theme. This is very interesting as it directly relates to some of the greatest philosophers in recent history. Not only in their beliefs, but in how they arrive at their beliefs. With Aristotle, we see that the main character analyses and arrives at the truth in a similar fashion to his most famous arguments. When it comes to the shaken beliefs of futuristic portrayals of civilization, it is clear that in the film they follow an attitude similar to a combination of Nietzsche and Pope. It is even possible to see a connection between Descartes and the main characters definitions of God. Cloud Atlas is very interesting in its cosmological portrayals and their comparisons to great philosophers.

Lightning is a natural electric force that I chose. The cause of lightning requires to types of charges negative and positive. A storm cloud is divided into two parts top being being positive and the bottom being negative. The reason for lighting to happen is because of this thing called charge separation which one positive charge and one negative charge split in half. Up to millions of water droplets are contained in one storm cloud. Water from the ground evaporates, and rises from the ground and goes up to the cloud rises up and comes together as it goes up to the cloud. The clouds collides with the moisture and then go up into the cloud. When they hit, the electrons get taken off the droplets, making the negative electrons turn into a positive electron. The moisture will always look for cold temperatures at a higher altitude. At a cold temperature the water will freeze. The particles then come together and form a region that’s inside the water. The frozen portion of the water of moisture becomes negatively charged and the outer droplets which gives it a more positive charge. The currents inside the cloud rip the protons off the droplets and move them inside the cloud and goes to the positive side. The frozen particles which contain the negative charges are then moved to the bottom half. Making the clouds polarized. The mechanism is what causes the polarization of the storm clouds. A storm cloud becomes polarized when one positive charge moved to the top of the clouds and one negative charges moving towards the bottom of the cloud.
When thunderstorm are mentioned, a large gray mass of clouds with an anvil shape immediately comes to mind, and most people never give it a second thought. Thunderstorms form because of the rapid upward movement of warm, moist air (2010, Thunderstorm). Depending on the severity of the storm there can be anything from several inches of rain to hail, and in some severe cases even tornadoes. Thunderstorms can be classified as a single-cell, multi-cell, or super-cell, with super-cells being the most severe of the three. Because of the large amounts of rain that can accompany a thunderstorm, they are also responsible for secondary disasters like flash flooding.
Furthermore, weather is conditions that occurred very recently or are currently happening at a particular location. For example, people might say, “The sky is really clearing up!” or maybe, “It snowed 6 inches last night.” The current temperature, dew-point, relative humidity, cloud cover, and precipitation all have to do with the weather. Once upon a time high above the earth, fluffy white clouds drifted through the atmosphere. In the clouds lived a family Droplet of water, round and content with life. For as long as I could remember, I spent my days lying on my back, relaxing and soaking up the sun's warm rays. One day, I took my usual place in the sun but the light didn't seem to be as bright. In fact, as the day went on, it grew darker and darker, loud claps of thunder shook the cloud, and the Droplet felt as if he were getting so heavy he could hardly move. This is called precipitation.
Key parameters for determining the indirect effect are the effectiveness of an aerosol particle to act as a cloud condensation nucleus, which is a function of the size, chemical composition, mixing state and ambient environment. In particular, aerosols act as nuclei on which water condenses. A high concentration of aerosols thus leads to cloud that contain many more and hence smaller, water droplets then clouds with the same water content formed in cleaner areas. As such cloud are more highly reflecting, this induces a negative radiative forcing which is referred to as the first indirect, the cloud-albedo effect. It is a common practice for military jets to dump glass strips coated with aluminum from planes when doing manoeuvres, supposedly to block radar. A 19960research paper entitled “Weather as a Force Multiplier: Owning the Weather in 2025 was presented to the US Air Force. Its primary focus was to identify ways to capitalize on emerging technologies for the use of future weather-modification to achieve military objectives. These objectives include everything from controlling precipitation and visibility to limiting fresh water through drought. They even include ways to reduce vulnerability from hostile enemy activities, which alludes to the fact that they believe this is a real threat from other nations too.
This is based upon the sunlight and volcano eruptions which plays an extreme factor. "Most often, global climate has changed because of variations from sunlight. Tiny wobbles in Earth’s orbit altered when and where sunlight falls on Earth’s surface. Variations in the Sun itself have alternately increased and decreased the amount of solar energy reaching Earth. Volcanic eruptions have generated particles that reflect sunlight, brightening the planet and cooling the climate. Volcanic activity has also, in the deep past, increased greenhouse gases over millions of years, contributing to episodes of global warming." (Global Warming, web.) However, I firmly believe that climate change is not only the result of natural causes alone. I think it is man-made and the major factors are from CO2, factories, and power plants burning coal/ oil, natural gas.
It was warm that day, but as the sun began to set it began to cool off. This led to a storm coming right at us. From our perspective, we were able to watch the storm form and start to come over us. It was amazing to have the colors of the sunset mixed with the clouds forming across the sky. Eventually, the storm reached us. We could see the rain starting to come down, soon reaching the edge of the lake. As it worked its way across the water, it looked as if a wall was coming at you finally just soaking you with the full force of the rain storm. There was another storm that occurred on the same trip, but this one came out of no where. We were outside in an open area playing badminton in our swim trunks. Then all of a sudden it started raining, but we continued playing anyway. Soon though, it started to hail, starting with just tiny pebbles eventually getting to be marble sized at its largest. This was by no means a dangerous hail storm, but it made me think about the formation of hail. This hail, started in the clouds as a water drop, then began to circulate through the cloud. Eventually it reached a specific size where the cloud could no longer hold onto it and it fell all the way down to the earth plopping down harmlessly on the ground.
