Eli and his fathers relationship changes overtime, does it get better or worse? In this story Eli and his dad are constantly arguing and cannot seem to have a normal conversation. Also a main argument is that Jonathan wants Eli to go to college but Eli doesn’t want to go. Eli and his fathers relationship can get better but they both have to try and make it better. In Nancy Werlin’s Double Helix, Eli and Jonathan Samuels are not pleased with there ugly relationship, which creates a negative and closed communication between them, until the mourning process of their mother’s death unifies them. Eli Samuels and his father are not communicating with their feelings in mind; therefore, they do not build a bond or connection with each other. Eli did not apply anywhere for college and wants to help his dad with finances, so he is debating on taking a job with Wyatt Transgenics. Eli Uttered, “ I need a job. This is as good a job as I could hope to find” (58). In the recent quote the words “ This is as good a job as I could hope to find” stick out because Eli is trying to tell his father that this is a great job but Jonathan hasn’t told Eli yet about what is bad about it. This is an example of closed communication because Jonathan is not telling Eli everything he should k Jonathan was saying to …show more content…
Eli he very much so wants him to attend college next year, but, Eli never told his father he did not apply anywhere yet which is another great example of a closed communication they share. Jonathan stated, “ I still think you should go to college in September” (58). Analysis: The words “ I still think” and “go to college” are important phrases because they have at first a good conversation about Eli’s future but turns into an argument. This is another example of negative communication that Eli and his father must fix. Now the hatred Jonathan has for Eli taking the job at Wyatt Transgenics has gotten worse, and Jonathan is trying to stop Eli from working there. Jonathan exclaimed with anger, “I am simply asking you to quit that job and do something else. Anything else” (60). In the last quote the words “quit that job” and“ do anything else” Jonathan is obviously crazy about Eli not taking the job but by Jonathan not telling Eli the reason why, Eli takes the job anyways. Then by Jonathan not telling Eli the whole story Eli takes the job anyways thinking it’s for the best. Jonathan does not want Eli to work at Wyatt Transgenics; although Eli does start working there, but some of the cause is because the have a negative and closed communication. Eli and Jonathan were practicing closed and negative communication but Eli’s mother passing away will help further their relationship get better.
Eli and his father’s relationship started to get better during the memorial service when they comforted each other about Elis mom dying. Eli said, “ Dad are you ok” (140)? The words “dad” and “you ok” stand out because it’s showing that Eli cares about his father. They both have a conversation that helps their relationship. As Jonathan starts to take out his wife’s thing he just keeps unboxing items and can’t mentally stop as part of his mourning process. Jonathan uttered sadly, “ I’m sorry. I’ve made a mess. I just… couldn’t stop”
(160). “I’m sorry” and “I couldn’t stop” both are phrases that stand out mostly because they talk about there feeling without getting in an argument. When Eli and his Father look at there mothers old positions they come to relies they can not give any of it away. Jonathan exclaimed with sadness, “ I can’t give it all away. We’ll pack it up again, after I’ve looked at everything, and we’ll put it back” (162). In the last quote the words “I cant give it all away” show that Eli and his father long for their mother. At this stage of the book their relationship starts to get better as the mourning process brings them together. Eli and his Father connected a few times, but the death of Eli mother will also help them connect and share a stronger bond. Ultimately in Nancy Werlins, Double helix Eli and his father have a rough relationship, which they are trying to fix, until the death of their mother, which creates a stronger bond between them. One main point is that Jonathan wants Eli to go to school but Eli does not want to and they do not talk about it. When they do not talk about it they are not communicating, which also is closed commuication. Another point is that Jonathan does not want Eli to work for Dr. Wyatt but Eli does not know what his father knows about him. If they would talk about why Dr. Wyatt is a nasty man then Eli would not take the job. Sense Eli has created a strong relationship with his father; he now needs to do the same with his newly discovered siblings.
He rarely displayed his feelings, not even within his family, and was more involved with the welfare of others than with his own kin.” This quote describes how Elie’s father is a well-round person who is more concerned over the people within his community than himself. This shows that he is companionate towards his community and is respected by all. He is considerate towards how people act and feel. , and maintains this leader-like role for his community, including his own son Elie. Elie sees his father as a role model and a person who is knowledgeable enough to handle difficult situations, or at least that is what Elie
with his father being a burden on his shoulder. Something that was holding him back but even though his father slack sometimes almost caused their demise and caused him to slowdown. In certain situations he kept moving forward and not giving up on his father and on himself. Also trying the best he could to survive and help his father survive.Elie even though he was a young boy took on an adult role and push through his situation handling it as an adult. It seemed to be that his father became a distraction towards the end of Night. Even though it hurt him to see his father in his last days or moments before his death even though we don’t know if he died we
My claim is that the father and son relationship of Elie and his father had a huge impact on his life. The way Elie thinks and the things he does for his father. His relationship takes him to extreme measures supporting him like he is the number one person to live. Elie was a good kid but when it had come to his father everything went up and down for him. So his relationship with his father wasn’t a good one and it was only leading to disaster.
Later on during their time in camp, Eliezer and his father develop a peer relationship. Both m...
Eliezer thinks of his own father and prays, “Oh God, Master of the Universe, give me the strength never to do what Rabbi Eliahu’s son has done” (Wiesel 91). He didn’t want to admit it but he could already feel his father falling behind. He feared that there may come a time when he would have to choose between his father and his own survival, and that was a choice he didn’t want to make. That choice came one night after being transferred by train to another camp. Once off the train they waited in the snow and freezing wind to be shown to their quarters.
...was almost no relationship. The father is a busy, well respected member of the Jewish community who has almost no interaction with his family. Eliezer recalls that his father was “cultured, rather unsentimental man. There was never any display of emotion, even at home. He was more concerned with others than with his own family” (2, Wiesel). When the two arrived at the camp we notice a switch in their relationship. The horrible experiences they encounter together at Auschwitz bring them closer to each other. Eliezer’s father becomes more affectionate and shows emotions toward his son who starts feeling this love. This is clear when Eliezer states “my father was crying, it was the first time I saw him cry, I had never thought it was possible” (19, Wiesel). It is clear that their relationship transforms from obedience and respect to love and caring about each other.
Upon their arrival of Birkenau, Elie was stuck like glue to his father “I felt the pressure of my father’s hand: we were alone.” (pg. 27) He would do anything to make sure his father did not feel a burden for him “ I bit my lips so that my father did not hear my teeth chattering.” (pg. 31) For some reason, Eliezer felt that it was his responsibility to care for his father and make him as relaxed as possible. Despite that, he eventually started to drift away from his original intentions. While his father was on his deathbed he begged for water, and frequently Eliezer would deliver him some, except for one time. During this one time, his father yelled out and was told several times to be quiet. Eliezer lay on the top bunk of the bed and watched the SS men deal him a violent blow on the head. Even after, he begged again for water and Ellie just lay there until the morning when he discovered his father was taken away to the crematories. If this were to happen in the very beginning, Eliezer would have gone right to his father's side with some water to hush him
...nd the doctor refused to help him because there was nothing he could do. He started to hallucinate and the others made fun of him. Did they not realize they suffer the same fate as him? When Eliezer woke, his father was no longer there. Possibly taken to the crematorium, all Eliezer could think was that he was free at last. What happened to not wanting to be separated from his father? He had become selfish and it is now hard to feel sympathy for him.
Eliezer goes through a dynamic change with his father. At the beginning of the story, Eliezer and his father are very distant, and there is no close relationship between them. They are never intimate or dependent on each other, before the deportation. After living through death, despair and starvation every day in the concentration camps, Eliezer not only becomes sad, melancholy, also undergoes powerful changes in the relationship, he shares with his father. Their relationship used to be distant, but their bond becomes strong, and filled with trust over time.
In addition, after the head of the block tells Elie to abandon his father, Elie thinks, “It’s too late to save your old father, I said to myself. You ought to have two rations of bread, two rations of soup. Only a fraction of a second, but I felt guilty. I ran to find a little soup to give my father”(80). At the beginning of the quote, Elie was tempted to desert his father and steal his father’s assets for himself.
Without a doubt, some decisions can affect not only the person making the decision, but also his most beloved ones. Elie truly understands this as he tells himself, “I had no right to let myself die. What would he do without me? I was his sole support” (87). The purpose of Elie’s survival is to provide hope to his father, and to strengthen his desire to live. Indeed, his thoughts are not about his own survival at this point, but instead, to encourage his father to continue living. When one of them gives up, the other has no intention of continuing his life. As Elie’s father falls asleep, Eliezer tells his father, “’We’ll take turns. I’ll watch over you and you’ll watch over me. We won’t let each other fall asleep. We’ll look after each other”’ (89). When father and son rely on one another, it gives them more motivation to pass by the difficult situati...
His father is getting old, and weak, and Elie realizes his father does not have the strength to survive on his own, and it is too late to save him. "It's too late to save your old father, I said to myself..."(pg 105). He felt guilty because he could not help his father, but he knew the only way to live is to watch out for himself. "Here, every man has to fight for himself and not think of anyone else. Even of his father..."(pg 105). He thinks of himself, and
In saying, “After my father’ death, nothing could touch me anymore,” Elie means that his father was his final reason to continue living. After his father’s death, he has no
...bers that he has a father and he forgot about him in the mob. “I knew he was running out of strength, close to death, and yet I had abandoned him” (p.106). Elie feels guilty for leaving his father when he needed Elie the most. After he wakes up he goes looking for his father. He feels as if he is responsible for taking care of his father. Elie replaces his faith with obligation to his father to help keep him going thought out the holocaust.
The harsh and even deadly conditions put a very big strain on every relationship between father and son. Some groups persevere and can stand to actually help out their family member but other times they can just contribute to each others downfall. Every character in the memoir, Night, is in an environment where it is every man for himself. During the movie, they are in the same situation but Guido chooses to care for his son. In the memoir, the fatherly role switches back and forth between Eliezer and his father. Most of the fatherly advice that Eliezer receives is about rationing his food to make it last longer. Eliezer has to take on a more mature active role in the memoir one example being when his father could not march in step and Eliezer starts to "practice in front of their block" even though his father still does not get it (Wiesel 55). The strain on the father-son relationship can come when either the father or son becomes too sick to carry on living. Night expresses this when Eliezer's father contracts dysentery and becomes bedridden, Eliezer brings his father his daily rations even though his father does not want to eat and just wants something to drink. From Eliezer helping his father all he doing is hurting himself he is carrying too heavy of a weight to bear and by struggling to keep his father alive the weight is just getting heavier and heavier.
