Over the course of the past eight years I have encountered many different situations in my life. I became a parent at the young age of seventeen. I faced an abusive boyfriend for a year. I became a single parent, whom worked two jobs and stayed up until one in the morning every night studying and completing assignments. I evolved into a parent of a child with special needs, a military wife, a college graduate, and a survivor. While all these obstacles could have turned me into a statistic, I chose a different path through perseverance, my Catholic values and the emphasis of being a Hispanic woman that reached her goals. My motivation for my master of social work degree is to be able to support families in their struggle. Throughout my coursework at Colorado State University I felt compelled to focus on the family and children. I chose classes that examined the exceptionality and psychopathology of children, as well as relationships and development. The diagnosis, prevention, treatment of many singular dysfunctions, disabilities, including mental, emotional, behavioral and addictive disorders, developmental disabilities and physical illness, injury and disability are all underneath the categories of a clinical social worker’s practice. I am committed to enhancing and helping maintain physical, psychological, social and spiritual well-being and functioning of individuals, families, small groups and communities. It is a personal objective of mine to specialize in culturally diverse children and families. I believe that the future of our country depends on creating a generation of psychological, social and spiritual healthy families.
