Using the philosophies of psychology to forecast and comprehend how to interpret in the best way the emotional, psychological, intellectual, biological, behavioral, and social aspects of human mental functions is clinical psychology. The evaluation of issues suffered by an individual by use of procedures, treatments, and a variety of practices and using scientific methods are executed by clinical psychologists (Plante, 2011). 278). The effort put forward to understand the way the human brain functions both normally and abnormally has had a significant impact on the evolution of clinical psychology. There are various scientific breakthroughs made often related to the human brain, behavior, and treatments. The knowledge gained through the ever evolving field of clinical psychology has shown to improve the lives of many individuals.
Sigmund Freud is famous for developing the concept of the id, ego, and superego and these have been tools that clinical psychologist have used to diagnose patients. Psychoanalysis goes deep into the mind of the patient to reveal the reason for each thought and behavior (Troland, 1914). Freud was a key player in the direction that clinical psychology took for decades.
Alfred Adler spent many years researching with the major psychologist, Freud, and Jung, but often disagreed with their theories. He believed that each person is unique and that no theory could cover everybody (Fisher,

School psychologists obtain a master's degree and work in a school. Whereas, a clinical psychologist can work in a variety of settings and have a doctorate (Plante, 2011).
Psychiatrists differ from a clinical psychologist in that they are physicians with medical degrees that have completed their residency in psychiatry. These professionals "use their medical training to diagnose and treat a wide spectrum of mental illnesses" (Plante, 2011, p.24). Psychiatrists are doctors and can prescribe medication in all states, whereas the psychologist can only legally prescribe in a few states. Social workers help individuals or families to deal with problems, such as domestic issues or social problems. "Social workers are mainly focused on case management, patient advocacy, and a liaison to social service agencies and benefits" (Plante, 2011, p. 25). The majority of social workers obtain a bachelor's degree although it is becoming more popular to have a master's degree in this
In all the psychology of the personality is difficult to understand, because trying to read what someone is thinking about you and your personality is a tough process. This was roughly and explanation into the view of Freud’s view of the id, ego, and superego and some of the psychoanalysis stages that come in the crazy world and studies of Sigmund Freud. Even though his views are not popular today some people still research them and think to themselves he might not be as weird as people told me he was.
The study of psychology began as a theoretical subject a branch of ancient philosophy, and later as a part of biological sciences and physiology. However, over the years, it has grown into a rigorous science and a separate discipline, with its own sets of guidance and experimental techniques. This paper aims to study the various stages that the science of psychology passed through to reach its contemporary status, and their effects on its development. It begins with an overview of the historical and philosophical basis of psychology, discusses the development of the various schools of thought, and highlights their effects on contemporary personal and professional decision-making.
Social work as a profession strives to help the welfare of those within the community whether its persons or families through advocacy. Often times clients are those who may be vulnerable and disadvantaged. Social workers aim to help people fulfill basic needs in their everyday lives and assist them by providing beneficial resources and intervention counseling. They do more than just help them in their current situation, it’s about helping them to survive and set attainable goals to live a fuller and better life for themselves, and most time for their families.
Clinical psychologists can treat a wide range of patients, from mental disorders to emotional problems. To get an easier and simpler idea of what a clinical psychologist does, Ferguson's Career Guidance Center's definition gives a good picture of a clinical psychologist’s job description, “Clinical psychologists concern themselves with people's mental and emotional disorders. They assess and treat problems ranging from normal psychological crises, such as adolescent rebellion or middle-age loss of self-esteem, to extreme conditions, such as severe depression and schizophrenia.”According to Careers in Psychology, a clinical psychologist has three main jobs, to assess the patient, diagnose disorders, and recommend a possible treatment. When a clinical psychologist assesses a patient it usually involv...
Psychologist and psychiatrist both work their hardest to work with people and help them work through their problems (Forensic Psychiatrist: Job Description, 2013). Forensic psychologist and psychiatrist are no different they just do their job in a different matter (Forensic Psychiatrist: Job Description, 2013). They evaluate things differently than most normal psychiatrist. They look at things through a medical aspect and a legal aspect (Forensic Psychiatrist: Job Description, 2013).
Psychology is the scientific study of the mind, brain, and behavior. In psychology, and all of the other sciences, relying on opinions is abandoned in order to find out which explanations best fit the evidence or data given. Science continually forces us to question our findings and conclusions. Over time, psychology has advanced greatly and a main reason for such progressiveness is because of the change in the research model used.
Sigmund Freud is best known for his development and use of psychoanalysis. The theory of psychoanalysis focuses on the concept of how our unconscious thoughts, feelings, and emotions play an active role in our daily lives. The id, ego, and superego are the three mental zones that encompass our psyche. Each zone has a specific function: The id functions on the pleasure principle; the ego on the protection of the individual; and the superego on protection of society. The degree of which each zone has been developed can be broken down and then analyzed. These three zones can be visualized by imagining a pie cut into three slices.
Sigmund Freud, a famous Austrian neurologist of the 19th and 20th century, was considered as the father of psychoanalysis; his most famous work is the Oedipus complex. Basing his theory on the name of Sophocles’ character, Oedipus, in the play Oedipus the King, Sigmund Freud discovered a psychological disorder that makes the sufferer acts like the character Oedipus. Oedipus the King is a play describing the prophecy of a child- saying that the child would grow up and kill his own father, but also sleep with his own mother. People with this oedipal disorder would act like Oedipus- desiring to have a relationship with their parents. Sigmund Freud clearly showed that he is highly influenced by Sophocles’ great work of art: basing his theory on Sophocles’ character and using Sophocles’ ideas to structure his own perception.
In conclusion, the clinical and statistical approaches in psychology can be beneficial to clinicians depending on the types of situations or specific areas that are being observed. As I mentioned earlier in my paper, the statistical method is useful when results are large and from heterogeneous samples and when they pertain to objective and specific areas. The clinical approach is beneficial in circumstances where situations are unforeseen rendering statistical tests moot. In addition, they are also useful when the interest in an individual case is high. Due to each individual being different and unique in their own way, I believe that clinicians should not rely heavily on statistical predictions and prepackaged treatments as opposed to clinical judgment and individual patients.
Sigmund Freud was a pioneer within the field of psychology who developed multiple theories that introduced the world to the inner meanings of the human unconscious. He created the theory of psychoanalysis, which allowed him to enter the world of the unconscious mind. He also proposed that humans go through a transition of various psychosexual stages, each level containing a different drive and desire. These urges were governed by the three components of the mind: the id, the ego, and the superego. He also believed that humans create defense mechanisms in order to drive away anxiety, guilt, and depression. However, he believed his greatest work resided within his interpretation of dreams through a method he called dream analysis. Each aspect of his studies and theories attempt to identify the reason behind human behavior.
Sigmund Freud was one of the original pioneers in the field of Psychology. The work that he accomplished throughout his lifetime laid a foundation for many theorists after him. The theorists that worked in Psychology, after Freud, were able to form their own thoughts, ideas, and hypotheses about the human mind after learning from his work. Sigmund Freud’s major contribution in the field of Psychology was his theory about the human psyche; which he called the Id, the Ego, and the Super-Ego. This theory was based on the human personality and its formation. Many of Freud’s analysis strategies became common practice in the field of Psychology and are still used today. Sigmund Freud will always be one of the most influential figures in the
In its early days, psychology had some trouble being recognized as a legitimate science; therefore, the definition contains a specific reference to scientific study as a contingency for its practice. Psychology makes a point of studying the scientific basis of all behaviors and the cognitive processes that lie behind them, as well as the physiological processes that support, affect and motivate behavior. As a study, it is always empirical, meaning that the only accepted ideas in psychology have been acquired through observation instead of arbitrary guesses or assumptions. Another important aspect of the definition of psychology is the presence of its seven unifying themes that form a common foundation for all its areas of research. The first
In this psychology class, I have learned about the different types of psychology. Before this class I always thought psychology was only the study of emotions. Later in the class I learned00 that psychology can be the study of the brain, emotions, disorders, and many others. Since I took this class I don’t understand how many people can get a psychologist and psychiatrist confused. A psychologist can have a Ph.D. or a Ed.D. A psychologists can be broken down into two categories such as research and clinical. Research psychologists study human behavior and could work for a wider range of employers. A clinical psychologist may work with patients who are mentally or emotionally disturbed. A psychiatrist is basically someone that is a doctor, they

The complexities of the human mind, how it works, why it works, and why it deviates sometimes, were the factors that drew me towards the field of psychology. I was born in India and as I was growing up I realized that psychological problems were not discussed in public. The mystery and intrigue surrounding the disorders further instilled in me the need to understand them in detail. As I continue my academic journey I wish to delve into the depths of Clinical Psychology in order to understand psychopathology better and use my knowledge and skills to create customized intervention plans and to facilitate a harmonious living environment.
