Writing clearly and concisely means choosing your words deliberately, constructing your sentences carefully, and using grammar properly. By writing clearly and concisely, you will get straight to the point in a way your audience can easily understand.
In order to succeed in your communication task, you need to keep your audience’s attention. Writing clearly and concisely is one way to capture and retain their interest. Alternatively, rambling on, may lose your audience’s attention.
Choose your words deliberately
The words you choose can either enhance or interfere with your meaning and your audience’s understanding. Follow the guidelines we will discuss to develop a strategy for choosing the most effective words for your task.
Use simple words: People tend to understand simple words more quickly, even if they’re familiar with a more elaborate synonym. An example would be using the word ‘begin’ instead of ‘commence’ or ‘send’ instead of ‘transmit’. Though you may be familiar with a technical processes and its related terminology, if your entire audience does not understand the technical terms, do not use them. Use simple terms instead, or if there are no substitutes, explain the meaning of the technical term.

Specific words, on the other hand, precisely and shortly convey your meaning. For example:
Vague: The X Company is developing a new technical device that allows people to communicate vocally in real time.
Specific: The X Company is developing a new cell phone.
Eliminate unnecessary words: Unnecessary words can come in many forms. Similar to vague words, they may conceal instead of reveal your intended meaning. Some examples may be: using excessive detail, repetitive words, or redundant words.
Pay attention to sentence
Furthermore, “troublesome words are those whose meanings appear to be simple, like “true”, “false,” “fact,” “law,” “good,” and “bad””(Postman 24). These words leave the reader with ambiguity. They could be interpreted in many different ways and often creates problems for the reader. Complex words with single, more concrete definitions are much easier to understand.
Writing is hardly ever done with just one sentence. It is a combination of sentences that all have to coincide with one another to reach a goal of clarity. "A series of clear sentences can still be confusing if we fail to design them to fit their context, to reflect a constant point of view, to emphasize our most important ideas. These sentences could all refer to the same set of conditions, but each leads us to understand the conditions from a different point of view," (Williams, 45). It is always a good idea to start out small; take a sentence and make is clear. This then needs to be applied to groups of sentences together to make the whole sample of writing clear.
In William Zinnser’s essay “Simplicity” he states that “clear thinking becomes clear writing; one can’t exist without the other.” He believes that people speak more complexly then they have to and that the key to good writing and speaking is simplicity. In his argument he goes on to say that often writers are not careful enough. They know what they are trying to say but do not know how to put it down on paper. They assume that the reader will understand what they are thinking even though their writing is not obvious to others. He does make several suggestions for improvement. Very easily one could make their writing easier to understand by simple corrections.

In this executive summary, I will examine Chapter 3: Clarity from Style: Toward Clarity and Grace written by Joseph Williams. In Chapter 3, Joseph mainly discusses the importance of writing ‘clear’ sentences. Moreover, he introduces several sub-topics to support his main claim. These sub-topics include: First, the rule for writing clear sentences. Secondly, sentence structure and sentence clarity.

You could find a cure to a deadly disease, but if it is not clear it will never be discovered. It will instead represent many lines of words that do not flow together.
