Clean Energy Production: No Easy Answers
Modern life requires vast amounts of electricity to maintain. Electricity is used industrially, commercially, as well as residentially and consumption of it has tripled in the United States within the past 50 years (U.S. Department of Energy, 2009). Major power outages cause disasters wherever they occur, not only inconveniencing daily life, but crippling emergency response systems, hospitals, and security systems. In extreme climates, electricity is a necessary component of survival as it is used for heating and air conditioning. The world is dependent on safe, effective, and huge amounts of electricity generation. Currently, the majority of all the electricity generated is from burning coal and gas (U.S. Department of Energy, 2009).
The world needs clean energy sources. Electricity generation from coal and gas is dramatically expediting climate change (Kirby, 2004). Smog cover is a common sight over the major cities in the United States and respiratory diseases are increasing at historic rates (Kirby, 2004). Nuclear power generation creates one way to produce electricity without creating air pollution, but safety, environmental issues, and cost of production deem it not sustainable (Kirby, 2004). Fortunately, clean energy production is not merely a dream for the future.
Clean energy production technologies are being developed that have the potential to significantly reduce pollution caused by electricity production ( Kirby,2004). I. (Gain Attention and Interest): March 11, 2011. 2:45 pm. Operations at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant continued as usual. At 2:46 pm a massive 9.0 earthquake strikes the island of Japan. All nuclear reactors on the island shut down automatically as a response to the earthquake. At Fukushima, emergency procedures are automatically enabled to shut down reactors and cool spent nuclear fuel before it melts-down in a catastrophic explosion. The situation seems under control, emergency diesel generators located in the basement of the plant activate and workers breathe a sigh of relief that the reactors are stabilizing. Then 41 minutes later at 3:27 pm the unthinkable occurs. As workers monitored the situation from within the plant, citizens from the adjacent town ran from the coastline as a 49 foot tsunami approached. The tsunami came swiftly and flooded the coastline situated Fukushima plant. Emergency generators were destroyed and cooling systems failed. Within hours, a chain of events led to an explosion of reactor 1 of the plant. Nuclear power has grown to be a big percentage of the world’s energy. As of January 18, 2013 in 31 countries 437 nuclear power plant units with an installed electric net capacity of about 372 GW are in operation and 68 plants with an installed capacity of 65 GW are in 15 countries under construction. As of end 2011 the total electricity production since 1951 amounts to 69,760 billion kWh. The cumulative operating experience amounted to 15, 15,080 years by end of 2012. Our planet is home to over five billion people, all consuming natural resource, and most producing finished goods. From bicycles to automobiles and houses to skyscrapers, this constant production takes an immense amount of energy. Not only human energy, but electricity too. It is need to power the assembly lines that make bicycles and automobiles. It's essential to run your home appliances, and business computers, and its all produced using similar methods. You heat water to produce steam, which turns a turbine, and generates electricity. Its not quite that simple, but for the purpose of this paper it will suffice. By far the most widespread source of fuel are fossil fuels. They are still abundant, and are relatively easy to obtain. However there is one main problem with the burning of fossil fuels. It produces pollution, in the form of dirty air, polluted water, and greenhouse gasses. This pollution is one of the main causes of global warming, the impact of which has the potential to destroy the planet. It is unreasonable to ask humanity to give up electricity, but the two main problems still exist. Pollution, and an eventual exhaustion of fossil fuels. Therefore an alternative form of energy must be found. Several ideas exist. There is hydroelectric power, solar power, wind power, and nuclear energy.
We depend on energy; nothing in our daily lives could be possible without it. Electricity primarily comes from burning fossil fuels or using nuclear reactors. But the plain truth is, we are running out of fossil fuels. Our known oil deposits will run out in approximately 35 years, and if we increase the use of natural gas and coal to make up for the energy loss, our natural gas will last for 45 years and coal deposits will deplete in 75 years.
Nuclear power, the use of exothermic nuclear processes to produce an enormous amount of electricity and heat for domestic, medical, military and industrial purposes i.e. “By the end of 2012 2346.3 kilowatt hours (KWh) of electricity was generated by nuclear reactors around the world” (International atomic energy agency Vienna, 2013, p.13). The United States currently relies on coal, oil, and natural gas to run our everyday lives. These different types of fossil fuels are nonrenewable and will eventually dwindle over time, becoming too expensive or too environmentally damaging to retrieve (Renewable Energy World.com, 2015). Different types of renewable energies are being discovered to better our world today. These renewable energies are also called green energy, and come from natural sources such as sunlight, wind, tides, and plants (Stephanie Rogers, 2012). Green energy will never dwindle away allowing us a continuous supply of energy to power our everyday lives in the future. This paper will cover facts of our nation using energy, and also cover the different alternatives of energy.It will also cover the use of elctric vehicles and educating our youth about their future.
