The Author, Marele Day portrays Claudia as a hero through the language devices and challenges stereotypical gender types when he presents the reader with judgements about aspects of Claudia such as her behaviour. “QUOTE”. “WORDS THAT SHOWS THE AUTHOR HAS”. Her negative role model figure comes across as she is interpreted as a sleazy drunk, something I never want you to be anything like. Marele Day is trying to position you to view her character as a hero. When she focuses on her language choices she has a strong use of evaluative language, you can see this in the book when she describes Claudia Valentine as being ‘dishonest’. Marele Days challenge in gender roles are driven by depiction of her newly invented personal investigator, Claudia Valentine who is put in place to challenge traditional gender stereotypes in a negative

manner in both reality and in fiction. Valentine thinks without acting, she reverts straight to killing without thinking about the collateral damage. Her promiscuous consciousness unavoidably creates a new voice for Claudia. You can see this when you read where she meets Dr Angell, where she acts as if she is the more dominant seducer she says, “it was all I could do to stop myself taking off my clothes and diving in”, rather than being predictably ‘seduced’. I don’t want you to be learning this sort of stuff in school, I don’t think you should be speaking about sexual topics openly especially through such a bad role model in a fiction novel. I believe you should be reading a better book such as, ‘The Hunger Games’ let me talk a little bit about it.
It is a story about a 16 year old girl named Katnis Everdeen steps forward to replace her sister in the annual ‘Hunger Games’.

In a flash forward episode to the near future, twelve boys and twelve girls are selected to appear on in a live TV show called ‘the hunger Games’. Katnis is an inspirational leader who puts herself before and someone who thinks consequences before actions. Suzanne Collins go to an extraordinary extent to portray Katnis as a hero. Collins portrays her as a hero and above all puts people before her throughout the novel and this is evidently correct when it is her and Peter as the last two survivors, and to win one must kill the other but they are both from the district, in the novel Collins writes in chapter 25, “they have to have a victor, without a victor the whole thing would blow up in the game maker’s faces. If peter and I were both to die”. Katnis twists the game and figures out how to beat the game she and peter decide to commit suicide, or at least pretend to so that they either both die humble or both live and get one up on the game makers. This action is so powerful because she rebels against pretty much the owners of her entire district and resents the use of violence and refuses to play the murder game. She above all puts her family first, straight up in the book it took 4 words to have her becoming an extraordinaire hero. ‘I volunteer as tribute’. When her younger sister is randomly selected to partake in the annual games she instantly

takes her place. She unselfishly showed that some things in life are worth getting hurt for. Again showing heroism when she stands up for what she believes in, I encourage you to strive to be like this there are so many times during the novel where Katnis could cash out and live in a world of piece but she stands up for herself.
Look I’m just a concerned father wanting his daughter to get the best in life. Collins has used powerful statements in her novel to position us as readers to see her character as a hero. I believe that this is the best version of a hero I think that Katnis is the perfect role model, and that you should be reading the hunger games in school. My optimal version of a role model for a teenage girl is someone who stands up for what they believe in and has a never say die attitude. Claudia Valentine is someone you should not be looking up to as a role model.
