During one of the third grade morning classes while observing in the Magnet program, I was asked to assist the class with doing the lesson. The class itself is working on project that was very technical and skill based. Being asked to help was very exciting. I had only been observing at the school for few weeks and only helped students occasionally if I noticed the student was in need of assistance. The project the class was working on involved using a large of wet media like paint and Mod Podge finishes. I spent majority of the class circulating through the room and providing assistance where I could be of use to either the teacher I was observing with or the students. could resolve issues they were running into or struggling with personally. For example, I would demonstrate how to do a technique and then I would allow the students to try the technique for themselves. I noticed that while many of the children were open and friendly with me. They would greet me with a smile and then launch into a barge of questions for me while giving me their whole life’s story. Often they would not hesitate randomly express or say personal things that if that if they were a few years old they may have kept to themselves. However, not all students were enthusiastic to speak with me.
Though I could tell that they were curious to about me, but perhaps they were too shy to speak to a stranger. I could see this behavior I ne little girl specifically. While I was working with her table group, her classmate were enthusiastic to speak with me. I attempted to engage her in conversation, but I would only short limited responses from her. As the lesson began to wrap up we started to clean the classroom. I stood by the drying racks and assisted the students placing their work on the racks. After almost all the students had given me their work to dry I had realized that there was one last student to give me their work. It was the same girl that was too timid to speak with me earlier in the lesson. I noticed she was having a hard time carrying her large piece of artwork that was covered in paint. She was taking small cautious steps and a look of complete concentration. She was trying her best to reach me without dropping her art work. Unfortunately, as fate would have it the moment she reached me the inevitable happened. Her work slipped from her hands and landed upside-down on both the floor and my right foot. My main concern was to make sure that her artwork was alright. Gently, I lifted the paper and noticed one a few minor issues that were easily fixed in a few seconds. I showed her how to mend it and it was repaired
quickly. Afterwards, I noticed that even though we had fixed her artwork, she was still very upset. At first I thought it was because of her art project, but then I noticed that she kept glancing at the floor where the art work had fallen and at my right shoe. Both locations were smeared with a rainbow paint and colors. She kept looking at me as if she expected some sort of volatile negative reaction. Instead of anger or disapproval, I smile at her a suggested that we should work together to clean the mess up before her homeroom teacher came to retrieve her class. Together we collected the cleaning supplies needed for the job. In a matter of minutes we had wiped the floors clean. Then we dried then for the safety of the room. We then tackled cleaning the paint off of my shoes. Once we had finished cleaning she hurried off to get in line and I started getting material prepared for the next classes. Suddenly, I felt something clamped onto my legs keeping me from moving. I look down and saw it was the little girl. She looked up at me and huge grin spread over her face. She thanked me and gave a final tight hug before scampering off to join her classmates. It always amazes me how much a simple interactions can affect people. I am unsure if the child was initially afraid of me or simple felt nervous being around a stranger. I am also unsure of what her circumstances at home or in the past have been like for her. My suspicions lead me to believe that she expected me to behave in a violent aggressive manner and start yelling at her or display some sort hostility. From experiences and observations in the past I have noticed that utilizing antagonistic and intimidating in the classroom environment do not achieve positive results. It tends be more successful to have a calm and positive demeanor, which can be difficult at times depending on the conditions. Yet, it is important to keep in mind, that even as a teacher attempting gain a positive result, using admonishing methods can cause more harm than good. This not only true for my observations, but it also noted in the observations and experiences of teachers who have had many experiences in their own classrooms (Jehlen). I am uncertain if the girl who hugged me has experience antagonism before, but I always try to approach these situations positively. Nevertheless, I must have done something right and encouraging given the reactions I elicited from the girl.
Both the volunteers and children were timid, but because of my natural imagination and easy-going nature with the children, I started telling silly stories they spent minutes laughing over and then watched them stretch their faces in front of my camera. I learned that I had a natural ability to start a movement, connect two different groups of people, and create bonds between them. Again, I was also shown with this ability when a fight emerged from my other group of younger volunteers. Many of them were angry at our group leader, all declaring to act out in some form of rebellion as revenge. Although I was angry at her myself, I respected my leader and refused to take a part of it. Instead of arguing, I talked to them and explained our leader’s possible situation. I have always had the ability to understand another person’s point of view, so I explained to them that taking care of twenty young teenagers is challenging and knowing each of our individual situations was difficult. Instead, I proposed we talk about our problems with our leader peacefully, which was what we ended up doing and created a tighter, stronger bond in our
The first time that he asked me to print and fax a document for him, he nearly took twice as long to go over every single button on the printer and explain a process that I had done plenty before. However, as time progressed I was able to more thoroughly demonstrate my aptitude as his assistant and he grew more lax in his instructions. I initially thought that he was somewhat arrogant because of his talking down, but I was eventually able to see his perspective on the job and admire his patience and kindness. Yet despite these challenges, this class has also been rewarding because I got to meet many new people and make new friends. Most of the students in the class immediately welcomed me into their lives and were appreciative of my work. A lot of my teachers, as well as fellow students, have thought that I am ridiculous, but I honestly take pride in a lot of the things people judge me for. Once, in third grade, my school’s principal stopped me in the hallway on my way to class. I had been reading while I was walking, so when he asked me about my book I thought that I was in trouble. As it turned out, he was interested in the fact that I was reading a book about advanced physics, and I started meeting with him once a week to talk about the book and about my writing. A lot of kids thought that I was a total dork because of this, but I owned it. One day a substitute teacher came in, and when I got called to the principal’s office for my meeting she thought that I was in trouble. Her face told me that she wanted to give me detention just for that, but every time she came into my class from then on, she knew who I was. It’s not that I need attention, which is good because attention isn’t usually what I get, it’s that I believe that everyone should try to make an impact on their environment in some way, however that may
This particular class period consisted of around 3 students, but one student was working particularly just by himself with his teachers aid. Even before it started Ms.Metcalf classroom energy felt a bit off, and come to find out that during lunch one of the students had been teasing the other student. The student that had also been causing trouble had out of nowhere stolen paper clips off of Ms.Metcalf. The other student was not able to stay on task, because he still felt upset from the incident that occurred during lunch. This soon became more of a discipline class rather than the student learning about math, and apparently the "bully" had created pointer with the paper clips that could have actually hurt someone. Soon after Ms. Metcalf had to call the assistant principles to step in to discipline the student, and lost a entire day of instructions due to one student misbehavior. After the misbehaving student had left she went over to the emotional distraught student and began discussing that he should never let people 's words if they weren 't nice and that entire lesson became a lesson on
Then I saw a girl vomiting in the kitcen sink. I knew that girl! Her name is Kaylee. She tutored me in math freshman year when I was in danger of failing, She didn't fit in with the girls I spent my free time with so I never spoke to her outside of school. Soon after we finished our tutoring, she transferred or dropped out- I didn't know which- and I never gave another thought to her whereabouts. What was she doing here? She must be so humiliated! Megan came into the room enthusiastically and very willing to communicate. She is a very happy and confident girl who says that she loves school. We had a casual conversation where I explained that I would be doing everything that I could to help her in school. My role today for the Home Health Simulation was an actress portraying a depressed mother of 5, amongst those was my pregnant teenage daughter played by Elizabeth. When the students first entered the home they failed to mention what their overall purpose for the visit was, it would have been nice to start off explaining what is was they were there to do. This made it a little awkward I wasn’t sure if I should ask if they wanted a tour of the home or if I should just continue what I was doing. For my LOTC project, I decided to go to Hope Middle School in Holt, MI to spend half a day in my mom’s classroom and help her students with math. These students that my mom teaches have learning disabilities and come in for an hour each day to get extra math help. Even though I am a management for information systems major, I wanted to come into my mom’s classroom because I wanted to get a little glimpse of what it would be like to teach kids especially if they have learning disabilities. I also wanted to go to my mom’s classroom for this LOTC project because I have the interest of being a teacher or professor one day and wanted to see if I would enjoy the classroom setting or not. It was make-up day and I was one of a group of students who either came too late to take pictures collectively or were absent for some mandatory reason. Luckily for me, I was sick that day, which was great because not only do I have legal permission to avoid school and wake up late, but also because ten other people have to deal with the lengthy wait time. I may have not been in the greatest mood, but at the same I was more relaxed and patient probably because I was only expecting a few students to be there. As expected, there were around three to four students forming a straight line, except for one kid… In front of me was a large kid who stood a distance away from the majority.

When I had communicated with them I had to bring them to the bus which was for the event and sit then down, to make then feel comfortable I had to then ask them if they wanted some orange juice, tea or coffee. This had made them feel a little comfortable talking to me. I had to then talk in a manner that would not make them feel threated because the reason for this activity was to ask if they know people who are being physical or emotional abused, because this is a sensitive topic I had to make sure that I was relaxed and had an open posture to show them that I am really interested in their matter, this was an activity that I had to carry out to get people to get involved in what the Otley action for older people and one of the information that I had to give and ask about was abuse. . When I was talking to Sue one of the elderly who I had approached I had realized she didn’t need any information about any of the topic that I was say, Sue needed information about what events is their going on this year. I then had to go and get the leaflet and to show that I didn’t mind that she needed some other information I had kept on smiling and I had listened carefully in what Sue was asking for.

For my observation experience I went to Southern High School in Harwood, MD. Southern High School has a special education department for the students with disabilities. The teacher that I met with for this classroom observation was Ms. West. In the classroom there were at least four assistant teachers that helped Ms. West throughout the school day. The assistant teachers helped Ms. West co- teach the class and were there to help the students if they needed extra help. The school also has a couple of student aides that come in to help the teachers and the students in the classroom. There were at least twelve students in the classroom. At age ten, I noticed a tall yet genuine classmate sitting on the last seat. Her behavior seemed to be unordinary compared with fellow peers. She smiled all the time without any sophistication but pure innocence. Fellow classmates and I questioned her numerous times regarding her personal matters when the teacher first introduced her on the first day of class. However, she only smiled back as if she did not understand questions. Oftentimes, classmates would tease her after class when teachers were absent. Sometimes, naughty peers would lure her to carry out indecent yet rude behaviors to other classmates. Nowadays, I can still recall her crying because some naughty classmates teased her with trash. Because of these ill-behaved plays, her mother was called and came into the class after her daughter cried the second time. At the moment, I thought my naughty peers would definitely get punished; however, it was the opposite of what I thought. The mother did not blame any naughty classmates but pleaded them to get along with kinds words instead of isolating and making fun of her. I was emotionally touched by her mother’s sincere speech and started to protect her from those naughty fellows ever since.
