Assessments in the classroom are ongoing. Assessments are important for teaching in the classroom and for assisting in continuing the learning process of the students. Three purposes of assessment are to measure the amount of information a student has learned and retained, identify a students’ learning needs in and outside the classroom, and gather evidence to help increase learning for the students.
Assessments need to be reliable and valid, meaning that in order for information obtained by assessments to be useful, the assessments need to meet certain requirements. Right as the class began the teacher had all the students separate just as if they were taking a major exam. The quiz consisted of ten questions, a few were multiple choice, a few were fill in the blanks and the rest were short answer questions. The students were given half the period to finish the quiz before they would begin lecture. The teacher explained to me that she uses this sort of an assessment because it lets her know what the students are struggling with before an exam without making a huge impact on their current grade. The teacher had noticed a trend in her exam on a particular question that a lot of students had got incorrect. She took out a few minutes at the beginning of class to go over the question. She started out asking the students what they thought the correct answer was and why. She than gave the students the correct answer and then briefly explained why their answers were incorrect. For those who do decide to further their education, they must choose which type of schooling is best, college or vocational schooling. Vocational schooling may appeal to those who are looking for an alternative and less expensive form of education. College, the more standard form of education, gives students the ability to have more flexibility since a variety of careers can be open to them from the major they choose. Both forms of education have its advantages and disadvantages, while benefiting the future of the student in the long run.

In the 21st century, teachers experience many behavioral issues with students in the classroom and face challenges that are very difficult to resolve. School districts have different expectations about how students must behave during school and teachers have their own expectations about how students must behave in their classroom. Assessments can be used to identify several important aspects of learning and development. First, they can be used to distinguish a child’s strengths and weaknesses as well as measure specific knowledge and skills. Assessments can also be used to demonstrate what a child has learned and what they understand (“Assessment,” 2014). My opinion of assessment has not changed; however, now I understand how to use assessments that will help ensure that I am providing the most benefits for my students.
It is important that teachers give children a fair chance to show their knowledge when assessing. “The purpose of assessment is to provide feedback that can be used to improve student performance” (Orange 2000). Teachers assess children to ensure that they are understanding the material, and to make sure they are learning. For young children, tests should never be the only criteria for assessment. Instructors should always make sure that their assessment is fair.
Through assessment students and teachers are able to determine the level of mastery a student has achieved with standards taught. Both formative and summative assessment should be purposeful and targeted to gain the most accurate data to drive further instruction (Ainsworth, 2010). While this syllabus does a good job of identifying the need for both formal and informal assessments, the way in which this is communicated does not provide enough detail for understanding. Simply listing assessment types does not give any insight into how these assessments fit in the learning process of this course. While some of the assessments mentioned could be common assessments chosen by the school or district to gain insight into the effectiveness of instruction, the inclusion of authentic assessments is most beneficial to students and demonstrates learning in a context closer to that of a work environment (Rovai, 2004). Unfortunately, this particular course, according to this syllabus, relies heavily on quizzes and traditional tests and essays to form the bulk of assessment opportunities. While other activities, such as formative assessments, journaling and discussions are mentioned as possible avenues for scoring, they are given a very low percentage of the overall grade. During the first day of school, a variety of different students enter the classroom. These students are excited and nervous, they have their parents by their sides who are observing the classroom walls and arrangement. In this essay, I will talk about the components of a lesson plan, the benefits of planning with clear and appropriate goals, selecting age-appropriate goals and objectives that align with state academic content standards, and selecting goals and objectives that are differentiated for varying abilities and learning styles and for multiple intelligences.
When an exam is designed well and has the sole purpose of testing the student’s knowledge on material that was presented during the semester it should expand the student’s knowledge. It should also allow both the teachers and students to see the progress and accomplishments that were achieved during the semester. Good results from exams should encourage students to continue their journey of learning. This puts a large amount of pressure on the teacher to make sure the exam is relevant to the information presented and that students are fully prepared for the exam. (Jensen)
I use assessments to assist me to identify and to develop their learning process. Assessment is not about the final grade, but the learning experience. I would rather have my students know how to look up information and apply knowledge than to memorize it and forget it ten minutes after the test. Learning is a life-long adventure and I want my students to know how to adjust and cope during their adventure. I want my students to have the skills for researching and finding the answer. It is not always that answer which demonstrates learning; it is in the process in which you find the answer that demonstrates learning.
Overall, I feel that the objectives of the lesson was met as the children were able to sort the animals according to two different attributes and describe how they were sorted. This was achieved by asking the children questions to gauge their understanding and by scaffolding their learning as they attempted to sort the animals both individually and in small groups.
Assessing student understanding is important but as a teacher you need to provide feedbacks to the students. During my lesson, I allowed the student to ask questions and tried to answer each individual’s answer right away. Since my students are not able to read or write I had to provide feedbacks by verbally.
