“To conquer [our enemies] we must dare, and dare again, and dare forever; and thus will France be saved” - Georges Jacques Danton. In 1789, a new era was born, an era that would go down in France and forever be known as the French Revolution. During this time period, France was divided into 3 social classes known as the Clergy, the Nobles, and the Common People. Each class was treated differently and some very unfairly, but the problem was that each class was divided into more classes within that class. Above all jobs, wealth, and social status were major factors of where a person would be in the society. The main reason for the French revolution was that France’s people greatly differed from class, therefore the people revolted which led to …show more content…
The Animals started out by revolting because they weren’t being treated fairly. After their revolt was successful everyone had an equal status. “All animals are equal” (Orwell, 25). Everything began to change when Napoleon decided he wanted to rule by himself and be the only one to have a say at Animal Farm. To make sure he made himself the only one in charge he had to run Snowball out of Animal Farm. “They sprang for Snowball, who only sprang from his place just in time to escape their snapping jaw.” (Orwell, 53). The animals began to slowly lose their equal status from here by believing everything that was told to them by the only pig who advocated Napoleon's actions and helped Napoleon inflict fear, Squealer. “One false step, and our enemies would be upon us. Surely, comrades, you do not want Jones back?” (Orwell, 56). Afterwards Napoleon murdered any animal that came in contact with or provided any type of help to Snowball, this is when all the animals, except the pigs, completely lost their equality and are back to being treated unfairly. “When they finished their confessions, the dogs promptly tore their throats out, and in a terrible voice demanded whether any other animals had anything to confess” (Orwell, 84). Ultimately, the thing the caused the animals to regain their equal status was when the animals noticed Napoleon was drinking alcohol with Mr. Pilkington. “The source of the …show more content…
Political issues differ in variety since there was a numerous of monarchs that ruled and helped cause the problems. During eighteenth Century France, multiple monarchs ruled the country (Vikram). France’s monarchs relished in the amount of unlimited power they had (Vikram). France had little care when it came to it’s people, they arrested whoever they wanted, whenever they wanted, whenever they liked (How Important Were Economic Causes of the French Revolution, Ward). “The autocratic monarchy, defective administration, extravagant expenditure formed the political cause of the French Revolution” (Vikram). Economical issues were a huge push to start the French Revolution. France’s economy was very weak and poor due to many wars from past monarch’s (Vikram). Also all the luxurious and expensive lives the monarch’s lived help drain France’s economy (Vikram). To get help France rid its financial troubles or at least lower their debt, many appointed the idea of placing taxes on all the classes, but King Louis XVI refused to even take it into consideration(Vikram). This is significant because this shows that France was politically and economically unstable when they had the French Revolution. Even though France knew it was in debt and not in good rule, they continued henceforth. Confidently showing that France was ready for a change. The French
In addition to the economic issues, France also held an Estate System that led to heavy social inequality. This oppression of the Third Estate along with the financial problems that fell on the common people would lead to the French Revolution. Overall, the people of France revolted against the monarchy because of the unsuccessful estate system and the inequality it led to, because of the new enlightenment ideas that inspired them, and because of the failures of the monarchy. First, the French Revolution was a result of the failed estate system and the extreme economic and social inequality it led to.
The French Revolution started during 1789, it allowed for the people to have a better government that actually protected the natural rights of the people. This toke a nearly a decade of rioting and violence for the Third Estate to have their way and get the rights they deserved. From all the causes like the famine of wheat, long debts because of wars, the heavy taxes, and their rights not being protected, some causes stood out more than the others. It is noted that these reasons had to play a major role in order for the French Revolution to occur. The three most important causes of the French revolution are the ideas that came from the Enlightenment, the Old Regime not being an efficient class system, and the heavy taxation.
Cause of the French Revolution The essential cause of the French revolution was the collision between a powerful, rising bourgeoisie and an entrenched aristocracy defending its privileges”. This statement is very accurate, to some extent. Although the collision between the two groups was probably the main cause of the revolution, there were two other things that also contributed to the insanity during the French revolution – the debt that France was in as well as the famine. Therefore, it was the juxtaposing of the bourgeoisie and the aristocracy as well as the debt and famine France was in that influenced the French Revolution. Many people were making a case for a new concept of society, in which commoners, especially the educated middle classes (bourgeoisie), had.
The first and main reason for the French Revolution was the terrible leadership of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette. The peasants wanted to overthrow them as they made France bankrupt by overspending. He spent a little less that 228 million livres in the span of 15 years. King Louis had sent huge amounts of money, military equipment and soldiers to America during the American Revolution because he wanted to help them beat Britain. He also spent a lot of money to build his palace, the Versailles. Marie Antoinette also used huge sums of money for her lavish parties and to fulfill her extravagant tastes. Both of these combined created a further debt for France. King Louis wanted to increase the taxes of the Third Estate to pay off the debts, which made the peasants even angrier, which will be talked about in the next paragraph. King Louis came into power at the age of 20, and he put most of the financial duties to Turgot, one of the best statesmen. When he finally realized the French Revolution was a big problem, all his attempts to stop it were all in vain because he didn’t know what to do sin...
The French Revolution started in 1787 because the country was going through financial difficulties and there was unrest between the classes of citizens in the country. The differences between the lower class citizens and higher classes, being nobles and the monarchy were great. The citizens had heard of the revolution that went on in the colonies and they also wanted freedom and independence. The real start of the French Revolution was on July 14, 1789, with the storming of the Bastille. Between 1789 1793, a constitution was written, feudalism was abolished, war had broken out, and King Louis XVI was put to death. In late 1793 and early 1794, Maximilien Robespierre became the head of the Committee of Public Safety in France. This was the new governing body in France; it could be compared to the executive branch of a government. Robespierre was a great leader, he ins...
There is a substantial amount of conflicts that occur in this satirical story. Often these conflicts are between the pigs and the rest of the animals. Only a minute portion of the animals didn’t really have some sort of conflict with Snowball, Napoleon, Squealer, or the rest of the dominating pigs. Overall, Snowball was a better leader than Napoleon, yet the animals reacted differently to Napoleon than to Snowball.
By first using propaganda to persuade the animals that Snowball was an enemy, Napoleon’s rise to power began. Snowball was Napoleon’s only real threat to assuming leadership. In the story, the two pigs always disagreed with each other. The other animals were divided equally in supporting either Snowball or Napoleon. By spreading the rumor that Snowball was a traitor, Napoleon was able to drive Snowball from the farm and become the leader of Animal Farm with no one to oppose him. Napoleon, with the help of Squealer, turned all the animals against Snowball. Squealer, who was a masterful manipulator, played an important part in convincing the animals that Snowball was an enemy. Naming Snowball as a “traitor”, Squealer played on the animals’ fear of humans and told them that Snowball had been a spy for the humans. The animals believed Squealer and thought that Snowball was only trouble on the farm. They later suspected that S...
An immediate cause of the French Revolution was the rising price of bread. The grain harvest had been low the previous year, so the price of bread rose. Bread was usually the only thing that the poor ate, and raising prices would make them starve
First of all, Napoleon is a huge Berkshire boar and he clearly is the most powerful of all the animals. He was able to take complete leadership of the farm because he secretly trained the dogs to attack Snowball. George Orwell writes, “ ‘Never mind the milk, comrades!’ cried Napoleon, placing himself in front of the buckets. ‘That will be attended to, the harvest is more important’ (817). Napoleon is quite demanding none of the animal’s even question his authority because they know that he has more control than any other animal. Throughout the novel Orwell has many quotes that describe Napoleon as a leader, “ ‘long live Comrade Napoleon’ ” (846). All the animals on the farm (no matter what Napoleon did to them) would treat him as a powerful leader and whatever he said they would do. Often Orwell stirs up controversy about the rebellion, “ ‘forward in the name of the rebellion. ‘Long live Animal farm!’ ‘Long live Comrade Napoleon!’ ‘Napoleon is always right.’ Those were his very last words, comrades’ ” (849). Squealer’s letting everyone know that no matter what happens to Animal Farm, just remember that Napoleon was an outstanding leader most of the time. Napoleon was an outstanding leader and contributor to Animal Farm without his power the farm would have collapsed earlier.
In order to understand the causes of the French Revolution we must first understand the separations within the French society at the time. The population was divided into 3 states, the Clergy and the Nobility which were the first and second Estates, both of whom did not have to pay taxes and were given privileges such as high positions in the army and civil service. The Third Estate consisted of everyone else, the pheasants, farmers, landless labourers, serfs and the emerging middle class called the bourgeois. 80% of the population was rural and were very highly taxed by the king, like the rest of the ...
...their greedy eyes they saw no reason to save the other farm animals. The book gives as little evidence of any pig showing protest to Napoleon’s actions except of course Snowball and the other three executed pigs.
There are several factors that led to the Revolution. King Louis XV and King Louis XVI both led extremely extravagant lives. They spent a lot of the government's money on luxuries even while the government had some financial problems. One of the government's main jobs back then was to protect their country from, and manage wars. In the Seven Years War against England, France spent large sums of money on the war effort but they still lost the war and had to give up their colonies in North America. Many French citizens regarded this loss as a major humiliation.
was the French Revolution. “Recent scholars tend to downplay the social class struggle and emphasize political, cultural, ideological, and personality factors in 2 the advent and unfolding of the conflict.” The French Revolution was caused by the unhappiness of peasants being taxed by the ruling classes of nobility, clergy. and the bourgeoisie of the city. In addition to being taxed, the high prices of food made many people revolt against the ruling class.
The French Revolution had many causes. According to the historian, French people revolted because they were, “intelligent, free, and prosperous to be critical of the existing conditions.” In other words, this historian is saying that the people of France knew what was going on in their country. I agree with this historian and this quote. There were conditions that existed in France the people were aware of. The ideas of the Enlightenment, social classes, and tax system contributed to the French Revolution. The French Revolution was based mostly on the Third Estate’s desire to obtain liberty and equality.
The main cause of the French Revolution was because of political dislike between peasants and the nobles. The causes of the French Revolution were because of the monarch over taxing the poor which made them revolt. In George Rude’s book “The French Revolution,” he states that,
