We’ve all been told not to judge someone primarily on the way they present themselves but by the content of their character. “You know my name not my story” is a common phrase that is thrown around in our society today. Despite the effort we give to not judge it happens subconsciously, because we are human. In this essay I will use my observation of others around me to better understand more about how we as individuals size up others based on their Socioeconomic status; a measure of an individual's place within a social class system; often used interchangeably with “class”(Ferris 2016). I will also use the perspective of a symbolic interactionist which explains social behavior in terms of how people interact with each other via symbols to help me better understand the idea behind class consciousness. I chose three individuals who in my opinion looked, and acted remarkably different. My first victim subject to judgement was a caucasian woman who looked like she could be in her early thirties. She was wearing basic black leggings with a grey sweater. She was pushing a baby in a stroller who looked like she was about 8 months old. Immediately I noticed that the woman had no coat on. This observation made me jump to the conclusion that she was apart of the working class. It was about 33 degrees and very windy that day and the woman had no coat. According to the National Public Radio working class families spend a large portion of their money on basic necessities such as food at home, utilities, and healthcare (Goldstein). Therefore many individuals who are apart of the working class don’t have extra funds for something as simple as a coat. I quickly concluded that buying a coat might not be apart of her spending plan. No coat on a very cold day was the indirect symbol that allowed me to conclude that the woman belonged to the working
For example, Dally is one of the poor greasers from the east side of the city, and Bob is a very rich Soc from the west side of the city. Dally, being a greaser from the east side of the city, has very little material wealth. Ponyboy states about all the greasers, “We’re poorer than the Socs and the middle class” (3). What little money Dally has he earns riding in local rodeos. He does not even own a car, but borrows Buck Merill’s when he needs one. In fact, Dally does not even have a permanent home. Ponyboy states that Dally “lived anywhere he could” (105). Therefore, Dally is an underprivileged greaser with little money and few possessions. On the contrary, Bob Sheldon is one of the extremely rich Socs from the west side of the city. Bob has no reason to work because everything he wants is handed to him by his affluent parents. Ponyboy describes the Socs, Bob’s click, as “the jet set, the West-side rich kids” (2). The Socs all seem to drive around in expensive sports cars and wear costly madras clothing, and Bob is no exception. Randy states that Bob’s parents “‘spoiled him rotten’” (116). For millennia, there have been constant conflicts between the upper class and the lower class, characterized by the upper class’s sense of superiority towards those less economically prosperous. Mansfield, Gordimer, and Orwell describe these conflicts between the upper and lower classes to propose that completely transcending class prejudices is impossible and suggest that societal values have greater impact than individual values as they degrade both a person’s behavior and morality.

This subjectivity could be seen in portrayals of students as “hesitant to position or describe themselves in terms of class” (Field & Morgan Klein, 2013, p. 167). Yet the response may not actually be hesitation to identify with a certain social class, and instead a student who actually does not identify with a social class. Another limiting factor of the study is that it was conducted in the United Kingdom and race was largely ignored. It is widely accepted that race has an influence on individual perceptions, and would undoubtedly influence perceptions of social class and whether it is seen as oppressive or a temporary state. Consequently, the same study conducted in the United States could have very different results and implications for practice.

The creative class is an emerging socioeconomic class in the United States. Richard Florida, a well-decorated Professor, defined this new class of Americans. Richard Florida focused on social and economic theories, which has developed a popular reputation in many cities today where the creative class has been adopted. This new class of Americans emerged after Richard Florida debuted his book The Rise of the Creative Class: And How it’s Transforming Work, Leisure, Community and Everyday Life in 2002. After 2002 postindustrial cities began to move to more economic development.
For the location of my naturalistic observational study I chose a public park with a splash pad which I frequently visit with my daughter. Since this site is quite popular with locals at any given time of the day there are at least over a dozen people present. As the park is designed for the entertainment of children the age group of the people varies. There are young children accompanied by their parents and grandparents as well as teenagers in groups. Therefore the above discussed park proved to be the greatest preference for me to observe the behavior of people in a natural setting.
Class in the American Culture is based on economic and social differences, and it remains a powerful force in American life and has come to play a greater role in today’s society. American culture classified social classes as three different levels, the higher class which is classified as the wealthier and have the most money and a certain lifestyles and clothes. The middle class more like the businesses, people who have a reasonable income. And the last class is the low class which are the working class people. Those in the upper middle classes enjoy better health and live longer than those in the middle classes, who live longer and better than those at the bottom. That 's because money, good jobs and connections help the better-off get the best medical care. People in the upper class also maintain a certain lifestyle and sometimes different clothing lifestyle than the ones in the lower classes.
A stereotype of social classes would be that all people from the lower class are not intelligent and fully rely on their government and the tax-paying people of the middle-class’s dollar for support. Although this is not always true, this misconception is still believed by many people from all aspects of life and social class. The middle class is defined as people who have to work hard daily and who are not wealthy, but at the same time are not poor. The upper class is stereotypically the people that do not have to work hard and have life the easiest. Although all these people are different without a doubt, there is nothing that defines these people as having to fall within these stereotypes. A poor person can work very hard without government assistance and still be poor, a rich person can work hard, and a middle-class person doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hardworking. Thinking about normal social interactions and normal social behaviors, I think of comfortable. When I sit down with a friend, a usual routine is followed, “Hey, how are you, what’s new?” (e.g. My turn, your turn). These questions between my friend and I include eye contact, attention, and facial expression. Usually, I feel that I give my friend my undivided attention. Other normal characteristics include: remembering what the person has just said so a comment can be made, as well as each comment is appropriate and in relation to the current topic. Throughout this fall semester, I have learned many things. Before this class, I have never had to buckle down and plan out my writing so tediously. The many outlines, rough drafts, and final drafts have crafted me into a much better writer than I would have ever expected to become. While I have always considered English as one of my strong subjects, through this class I have learned that English has many more components than I originally thought.
