Social division, whether it is caused by economic, cultural, or social factors, is an ongoing and controversial issue that creates a hierarchy called “class” in society. 21st century Britain is not renowned for being a nation that is fair and equal, but rather as a nation that is still widely obsessed with class. In this context, I am defining class as a form of social stratification and inequality that categorizes people into different rankings, formed on a basis of prestige and wealth. This essay will firstly argue the existence of class in contemporary Britain by using a historical perspective from popular philosophers such as Karl Marx. Secondly, it will reveal a public survey of social class and explain the indicators of class that are present in British education, sports, accent, and politics. Overall, these indicators would verify the statement that says, “Class is still a relevant factor in 21st century Britain”. Many modern day scholars and thinkers have developed their interpretations of class from the concepts given by Karl Marx, using his ideas as a guide to present their beliefs. Hence, a journey toward producing a “classless” society, as proposed by John Major, might not be achieved in the near future. Class is still everywhere. Throughout the history of Britain, class has always been an issue, and its topic remains to be an obsessional and contentious factor in people’s mind. As it can be seen, there are many factors revealing the existence of class, but at the same time, there are also many scholars suggesting that class is no longer valid. However, despite its ambiguity, it can be concluded that whether or not “classes” do exist, social division is still prevalent in British politics, public surveys, education, sport, and accent. In conclusion, to sum up the existence of class in modern Britain, class is still a relevant factor in society.
