This chapter started off saying Clara Barton was the youngest of five children, and her parents were both abolitionist. She was born on Christmas, in 1821. When, she was Eleven years old, her brother broke his leg and she used her medical skills to aid him for three years. When Barton was sixteen, her parents told her to become a teacher to deal with her shyness. Barton applied to be a teacher, and shortly after she was accepted at Massachusetts District 9 school. Clara quickly learned that she was an excellent teacher, and her students loved to go to school. She decided to get further education to be able to teach better. In 1850, Barton went to Clinton Liberal Institute where she was taught English language Arts. Later, Barton moved to
New Jersey, where she also taught. Then, she started to work in the patent office, but later got fired. When the civil war started, Barton rushed over to help the injured. Barton was the first female to go on the battlegrounds during the Civil War. She became the Superintendent of the Union Nurses, and had permission to do anything that involved the Union Nurses. After the Civil war, Barton was in charge for finding the missing soldiers. Then one day, Dorence Atwater found out about her and told her where they are. When she went out for a vacation she learned about the Red Cross she decided America needed one, she founded The American Red Cross in 1873. Clara Barton died at the age of ninety-one due to a cold.

She went to places like Providence, Rhode Island, New York, and many cities as the title of “The American Heroine.” She began her lectures dressed as a woman and then later went into her uniform and showed a soldier’s routine to fight. Then she did that for about 5 years then she got a job as a teacher again. Sampson was a teacher until she retired then she got even more sick because of her injures she sustained during war she had to get pills and go to doctors to get better. With the success of her tour Deborah refreshed her campaign she also gained the support of Paul Revere, he went to her farm in 1804 then he wrote a letter to the Congress.
Harriet studied and assisted as a teacher at the Western Female Institute, a school in Hartford, Connecticut, that her sister Catherine had founded. Harriet moved with her father to Cincinnati, Ohio, as a result of her father’s religious appointment. Harriet’s career as a teacher ended when she married widower Calvin Stowe. Across the river from Cincinnati was Kentucky, where Calvin Stowe’s home was located. Kentucky was a slave state, and Harriet was able to experience firsthand the horrors of slavery. Also, Harriet’s new home with Stowe was a “station” along the “underground railroad”, and Harriet had even more experience and interaction with the slaves. Harriet had always been creative as a child, and she loved to write. Her anger toward slavery in addition with encouragement from her sister-in-law to “use her skills to aid the cause of abolition” (Wells) inspired Harriet to write Uncle Tom’s Cabin (Wells; University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee).
Frances Ellen Watkins Harper was a unique and vital character in American history. She played an imperative role in the equality and advancement of not just African-American women, but women in general. Although she was born a free women in Maryland she had an unparalleled knack for describing and capturing the evils and horrors of slavery. She wrote a plethora of novels, short stories and poems. In her early years she taught in both Ohio and Pennsylvania, after leaving teaching she left teaching to lecture for the Maine Anti-slavery society along with other anti-slavery organizations. She also worked to help fugitive slaves escape to Canada through the Underground Railroad. Frances E. W. Born on December 25, 1921, Clara grew up in a family of four children, all at least 11 years older than her (Pryor, 3). Clara’s childhood was more of one that had several babysitters than siblings, each taking part of her education. Clara excelled at the academic part of life, but was very timid among strangers. School was not a particularly happy point in her life, being unable to fit in with her rambunctious classmates after having such a quiet childhood. The idea of being a burden to the family was in Clara’s head and felt that the way to win the affection of her family was to do extremely well in her classes to find the love that she felt was needed to be earned. She was extremely proud of the positive attention that her achievement of an academic scholarship (Pryor, 12). This praise for her accomplishment in the field of academics enriched her “taste for masculine accomplishments”. Her mother however, began to take notice of this and began to teach her to “be more feminine” by cooking dinners and building fires (Pryor, 15). The 1830’s was a time when the women of the United States really began to take a stand for the rights that they deserved (Duiker, 552). Growing up in the mist of this most likely helped Barton become the woman she turned out to be.
Clarissa Harlowe Barton, born on December 25, 1821, in North Oxford, Massachusetts. Carissa (Clara) was born the youngest of five children to Sarah and Steven Barton. Clara received all of her schooling and life training from her parents, brothers and sisters. Her father who was a once a captain in a war, taught Clara all he knew about the battlefield. Her mother taught her to sew and cook. Her two older sisters Sally and Dorothy taught her to read before she was four years old. Her brother Stephen taught her arithmetic and David her eldest brother taught her everything else; for instance, how to ride anything on anything with four legs, how to shoot a revolver, how to balance and how to take care of and nurse animals. (OTQEF, 1999, p.1) When Clara was 11 years old her favorite brother David, fell from the roof of the barn while trying to fix it, he was seriously injured and was not expected to live. Anna Julia Haywood was born into slavery to Hannah Stanley Haywood and her master, George Washington Haywood, in 1858.1 At the age of nine, she enrolled in St. Augustine's Normal School and Collegiate Institute for free Blacks. Cooper married St. Augustine graduate George Cooper, in 1877. His death in 1879 "ironically allowed her to pursue a ca reer as a teacher, whereas no married woman—black or white—could continue to teach."2 Cooper received a Bachelor's and a Master's degree from Oberlin College, and was first recruited to teach in 1887. She taught at M Street High School, Washingto n's only black high school, for many years, and was the subject of public controversy because of her educational philosophy.
Almost all Americans have learned about the iconic people in American history including George Washington, Thomas Edison, and Abraham Lincoln. Although all of them deserve their recognition, they aren’t the only ones who have changed history. Many Americans, not just a select few, changed history and created the America we know today. One in particular is Clarissa Harlowe Barton, who went by the name of Clara. At the time Clara lived, women were still considered inferior to men. Throughout her work, she faced much sexism, but she worked past it and created a legacy for herself. Also occurring during her life was the Civil War, which she was a very helpful part of. Clara’s most well known achievement is her founding of the American Red Cross. In addition to that, Clara also established the nation’s first free public school in Bordentown, New Jersey, worked as a field nurse during the Civil War, and supported the movement for women’s suffrage. Barton has received little recognition for her efforts, but the work she did is still being continued today at the American Red Cross where they give relief to the victims 70,000 every year. By understanding her life and the work she did, people are able to realize the impact she had on the world, for it far exceeds that of which she is recognized with.
Wells was a fearless anti-lynching crusader, women’s rights advocate, journalist, and speaker. After her parents passed away she became a teacher and received a job to teach at a nearby school. With this job she was able to support the needs of her siblings. In 1844 in Memphis, Tennessee, she was asked by the conductor of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Company to give up her seat on the train to a white man. Wells refused, but was forcefully removed from the train and all the white passengers applauded. Wells was angered by this and sued the company and won her case in the local courts; the local court appealed to the Supreme Court of Tennessee. The Supreme Court reversed the court’s ruling. Clara Barton made a very great impact on the war. Clara Barton, who originally was a recording clerk, jumped into action when federal troops came into her city. The troops were injured, hungry, and hardly clothed. Barton cared for the Union soldiers by bringing them food, clothes, and supplies for the sick. Besides helping supply the soldier’s needs, Barton also provided emotional support for the men. She was able to help the men keep up their spirits and hope. Ways she comforted them was reading, praying for them, listening to their problems, and writing letters for their loved ones. Barton was able to develop a volunteer group and gather supplies for the future when soldiers were in need. Barton not only wanted to help the soldiers in her town, but the soldiers on the battlefield. She approached the leaders in the government and asked for permission to supply the army with medical service and support. Permission to help Union soldiers on the battlefield was granted to her. Later after the battle of Cedar Mountain, Barton arrived. She arrived at the battlefield with a wagon full of supplies for the soldiers. The surgeons helping the soldiers were surprised and declared “she was an angel sent to them”.
Education for women in the 1800s was far different from what we know today. During her life, a girl was taught more necessary skills around the home than the information out of school books. A woman’s formal education was limited because her job opportunities were limited—and vice versa. Society could not conceive of a woman entering a profession such as medicine or the law and therefore did not offer her the chance to do so. It was much more important to be considered 'accomplished' than thoroughly educated. Elizabeth Bennet indicated to her sisters that she would continue to learn through reading, describing education for herself as being unstructured but accessible. If a woman desired to further he education past what her classes would teach her, she would have to do so independently, and that is what most women did.
Throughout time society has been tested many a time. The tests of society are those which show the development of a society’s culture, morals and value system. The recent events of Maycomb have shown it has not developed or flourished but that with the death of my dear husband, Tom, it has failed miserably. Justice, although bittersweet, is the pie that society has been given the duty to serve. The once-solid pillars of fairness and humanity upon which our society was built are crumbling. The trials and tribulations of Tom Robinson have not only led me to lose faith in justice, fairness and humanity but removed my veil of ignorance and shown me the ignorant “whites” have the power to kill even the sweetest of mockingbirds.
