Civil Disobedience

Throughout History, there are always laws and rules; however, these rules wouldn’t evolve and progress in a government if it weren’t for civil disobedience. Throughout the course of history, especially in democracies, civil disobedience has been used to change unright laws, and it gives people the freedom to stand for what they believe in. There are countless examples of people who protested and changed the world. In a way, it also lets people stay true to what they believe is right, whether it be for religious reasons or just because of their ethics. Civil Disobedience is, and always has been, a part of society; it is not only a part of government, but it is also necessary in a democracy where people have freedom of speech and other similar rights.
Civil disobedience as a whole is often a vague conception; so what is it exactly? Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it as “refusal to obey laws as a way of forcing the government to do or change something.” This is often seen as protesting. Civil disobedience occurs throughout the world; the United States, India, Hong Kong, South Africa (practiced inconsistently), Japan, and many other countries. Each country has its own laws and rights vary, but on a basic level a lot of countries have freedom of speech. One specific example is in the United States Constitution; the First Amendment states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” This basically states that denizens of the United States have the right to protest, as well as freedom of speech and freedom...

...d the world and the society they lived in because they had a dream, or an ideal that they strived towards. Because of these ethics and moral ideas, people were fueled to go forward and lead group of people towards a changed society. With all of this taken into thought, including laws such as freedom of speech, it only makes sense that civil disobedience is right and justified. With setbacks from people getting out of hand during protests, it is the best to realize that whilst practicing freedom, denizens of any given place should know the laws and never break them. Lastly, civil disobedience should be allowed and practiced safely, because it has always been around and has often resulted in the improvement of society. As every law, there will always be setbacks and obstacles that need to be recognized, however, in the end, civil disobedience does more good than bad.
