Civic engagement is vital to function in a democratic society and its individual development. Thus, engaging the young people in civic activities is substantial for their transition to adulthood along with their personal growth (Adu-Gyamfi, 2015). Through this, they are tested how they value democracy amidst pressing societal problems. Since participation in civic activities is frequent to democratic societies, it becomes an essential element and key concept which is tacitly linked to citizenship (Adu-Gyamfi, 2015, Crowley & Moxon, 2017). According to Crowley and Moxon (2017), as stated in The Revised European Charter on the Participation of Young People in Local and Regional Life of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, that both participation and active citizenship are expressions of exercising the right, the means, the space as well as the opportunity in building a better society. However, the study of history doesn’t just teach students about events, dates, and names, but it helps to develop certain characteristics in students that not all fields of study are able to do. Throughout my study of history at College of the Ozarks, I have learned the necessity of civic engagement in society, as well as gained a deeper understanding and the importance of American ideals, including freedom and democracy, as well as the Christian virtues of selflessness and empathy.
