Civic engagement is promoting the quality of life in a community through both political and non-political process. The more we have on our brain the more stressed we are and the less empathy we feel for others and reduce our own happiness. Worrying about something that’s going to happen can affect the brain from functioning effectively on that moment. When the mind is absent, the body is usually absent too. The 1st conclusion that can be drawn is, the less peace there will be when the community has a lot to worry about or somehow in some way stressed. Which will make us feel less empathy for others, which can lead to a disagreement within a community and can cause conflict between each other. 2nd conclusion that can be drawn is the less happy
It is our civic right and duty to actively participate in governmental affairs. This recent election really highlighted the divide in opinion regarding the importance of governmental participation. “To many, our democratic system seems so broken that they have simply lost faith that their participation could really matter,” West writes in his essay entitled The Deep Democratic Tradition in America. Young people feel unimportant and irrelevant, which explains the lack in turnout from young voters ages 18-29. However, it wasn’t just young voters that didn’t turnout. Millions of eligible voters didn’t show up for the 2016 elections. A democracy without active participants is a democracy bound for
To make matters worse, civic participation, like voting, simply becomes a way for citizens to “console themselves”(9). For it remains an expression of free-will by the people in which they feel like they influenced politics, but in reality, they were just choosing a selection from predetermined options. Tocqueville writes all of this as a warning to Americans of the dangers of allowing themselves to focus too much on material goods because all of this is fake and detrimental to American democracy and humanity. Ultimately, Tocqueville does believe that these issues can be avoided as long as citizens engage in civic association with one another to the extent that they then are forced to challenge the norm and think critically about the nature of political life.
peace, reduce fear, and provide for a safe environment to the people of the community
While American soldiers were busy fighting on the front lines against the Axis Powers, Americans at home demonstrated Civic Responsibility and did their part during World War II by using their production or work system to produce useful things for the army. Civic responsibility is your duty as a citizen to try to help your country. According to Document C, citizens promised, “I shall be regular in my attendance because every unnecessary day I take off is a red letter day for the enemy. I shall be thrifty with my time giving every working hour 60 minutes. I shall be careful of my work so that neither waste nor delay shall endanger the life of a Navy man. I shall be loyal to my job and my country, remembering that tomorrow’s frontline

Political efficacy refers to the degree in which an individual believes he or she has an ability to influence the government (Chan 2014). The decision to engage with politics is usually a result of one’s attitudes towards participation, in the sense that there cannot be a political action without some prior thought about a political issue. One of the common attitudes related to political participation is political efficacy (Caprara et al., 2009). Political efficacy is individual's faith and trust in government and their belief that they can understand and influence political affairs. it is commonly measured by surveys and is used as an indicator for the broader health of civil society. When an individual has low efficacy, he does not have faith in his
Activism is not where you originate from or where you are located, it’s what you do. Activism allows us to make social changes; this can occur in many different ways. It allows us to make a change in the world through political, social, economic, and sometimes even through environmental changes. It’s usually lead by individuals but the majority of the time people gather collectively through social movements. An activist is the principal of a social movement. Commitment to community is a requirement for contemporary Americans and vital to its survival. “Love thy neighbor as thyself” is the unselfish act of sharing: from a cup of sugar to a wealth of information to the guardianship of all children involved and the protection of every individual in that said community. Whether that community consists of the “Classic Neighborhood, those with a common set of goals, or those who share a common identity” the thread that holds this matrix together is always woven into the shared identity as well as responsibility of all involved. (Redmond, 2010). A community cannot continue to exist through the will of withdrawn individuals who arms only embrace themselves and have no involvement whatsoever with neighbors one door away.
What is peace good for? It is good for the world, it is good for relationships
Alice Elliott Dark’s fictional story “Rumm Road, ” discusses the influence that one citizen could potentially have on an entire community. Dark’s story talks about a group of girls who all happens to be involved in a conflict down on Rumm Road, which is “one in the richest streets in town.” (Dark 3). The narrator and her friends didn’t pay much mind to these girls due to the conflict didn’t directly affect their neighborhood, until it is discovered that one of these girls originated from their community. Dark’s story “Rumm Road” ultimately takes a position on the responsibility of being a citizen. The position that the story takes is that the responsibility of being a citizen is to be more involved and aware with their society. As for this story, it shows how the characters aren’t following their responsibilities until a critical event happens and awakens them to be more involved and aware. This awakening allows the characters to take forth the responsibilities a citizen should have. Dark uses of pronouns in her writing, awareness of the characters, assumption among the characters, and implanting feelings in the characters, she is able to state how citizens in general should be more aware and involved in their society and carry out that as their responsibilities.
The community engagement project is a tool that has shown me how realistic the concepts I’ve learned in my core classes are to society and the city I live in. The purpose of this project is to apply concepts we learned in class to the real world and to help connect our individual experiences to greater contexts such as what we are majoring in college or what we plan to do for our professional career. Some of my personal goals include working in a field where I can be hands on and gain a more global perspective by helping foreign, underdeveloped countries. By having a clear understanding of how the church tries to fight societal injustices and understanding how communities can work towards fulfilling our human rights, I can be more successful
Community engagement is the active participation of local residents and community groups in the decisions that affect their lives (Herefordshire Council, 2013). Therefore, community engagement should be about engaging in open communication to ensure the council understands the needs of the local community.
