The title of DNP scholarly project number 2 is Long-Term Outcomes of Service-Learning on Civic Engagement and Professional Nursing Practice. The study sought to determine if a correlation existed between participation in the service-learning experience and self-efficacy toward civic engagement as a long-term outcome of professional nursing education. This study finding revealed that there is a definite relationship between the pedagogy of service-learning within the professional nursing curriculum and the development of self-efficacy for long-term civic engagement as well as professional practice. This positive finding is supported by the service-learning literature and addresses the development of professional nursing students in the overall
concern of long-term commitment to the community. This DNP project correlated with this author’s phenomena of interest as well as the author’s theoretical framework. Service-Learning is a teaching pedagogy that links theory to practice while meeting an individual community need (National Service-Learning Clearinghouse, 2012). The relative new teaching methodology allows application of theory to the real-world environment. This type experiential learning increases students understanding of course content as well as enhances civic responsibility. According to the American Association of Colleges & Universities, “service-learning is a community-based form of experiential learning that is a high impact educational practice.” (Association of American Colleges and Universities, 2012). Bandura’s Social Cognitive theory is the theoretical framework that this author will utilize to guide the selected DNP project. Self-efficacy influences a person’s feelings toward his or her ability to succeed in a specific situation (Artino, 2012). The DNP project I am considering will focus on expanding the development of self-efficacy in nursing students through service learning. The project findings will assist with developing policies and protocols for future service-learning projects.
Through investigating the CARNA Standards of Nursing Practice (2005) and the Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics (2008) mentioned in the above section I have learned the great impact and responsibility the role of a Registered Nurse carries. Before this semester I was unaware of the roles a registered nurse assumes in daily practice such as leader and educator, and how much these roles mean in the function of the health care system. Through beginning to take on such roles and understanding the ethics, standards, and many other aspects of nursing, and in specific community health nursing, my thought process has changed from that as an ordinary student to a nursing student who brings the population health approach and upstream thinking into everyday practice. The functional area of service-learning is currently emerging as an acknowledged department at an institution of higher education. The theoretical roots of service learning go back to John Dewey, and the early twentieth century. However, current research on service-learning pedagogy dates back only to the early 1990’s. Best practices for the field are still being created as more and more new offices are springing up on campuses throughout the United States and institutions internationally. As young people’s civic and political participation continues to decline, a number of organizations are working to reverse the decline by increasing opportunities for youth to participate. Communities around the country are taking steps to engage young people through a variety of methods that allow youth to actually participate in policy development and take action on local issues. The effectiveness of such community programs on long-term civic engagement is not well documented, however. This paper presents preliminary research about the effectiveness of one community participation program, the Southern Nevada Water Authority’s Youth Advisory Council. Quantitative and anecdotal evidence, while not conclusive, suggest this community problem solving approach may encourage its participants to engage in other civic and political activities. The paper also discusses the benefits that organizations and communities receive when young people participate in this way, and provides recommendations for developing a similar youth participation program.

Nurses understand early in their career the importance of continuing education to enhance future career opportunities. Professional development relates to how nurses continue to broaden their knowledge, skills, and expertise throughout their career, therefore enhancing their professional practice. This advanced knowledge is not only career boosting, but also opens a seat at the table giving nurses the power to make decisions and effect changes. Activities and philosophies that advocate for the connecting of communities with socially sentient beliefs and actions is what have come to be referred to as civic engagement. They are thus individual or collective actions aimed at addressing issues that are deemed to be of public concern. They can be manifested in many ways including; public service, civil activity, service-learning, crusading and advocacy to mention but a few as the list is endless.
As a nursing student, SNA will provide me the necessary assets to move forward from a scholar to the professional nursing world. This organization will equip me with an education of excellence, instructing me about contemporary health problems on campus and in the community. In addition, being a member of SNA will expand my interpersonal skills. I will learn how to improve my cooperation and communication between people and organizations. Following SNA objectives, will promote a good relationship between the nursing faculty and myself. I will play an active role within the student government, which will provide me beneficial experience and will also improve my resume. Applying for a nursing position after being engaged in the program will open doors to a good job in the healthcare profession. Nursing is a stepping-stone for me towards achieving my goal, as it will help me gain the ideas and skills to serve the community. In order to learn about the field and start helping people I have volunteered at Children’s Hospital of Oakland for two years. At Children’s hospital, I offered assistance to parents by holding babies and helped the nurses by running errands and comforting babies during their tough times. I have also been volunteering in the emergency department at Doctors Medical Center for more than a year where I have been assisting emergency personnel as well as the patients during their urgent time. I have also volunteered as a student nurse to give vaccinations to low-income population in San Francisco. These experiences have not only helped me understand the complexities of working with a highly diverse and multi-cultural population, but I have also experienced the joy that comes in our lives from offering a helping hand to those in need.
Community engagement is the active participation of local residents and community groups in the decisions that affect their lives (Herefordshire Council, 2013). Therefore, community engagement should be about engaging in open communication to ensure the council understands the needs of the local community.
More specifically, I wanted to increase my understanding concerning the role knowledge and experience have on nursing and the way in which nursing affects the community around it. For example, a day as a nurse is ever changing, from the patient supply to the randomness of patient situations and the choice of choosing how to approach those unfamiliar predicaments. Nursing would challenge me to think on my feet in a moment’s notice and thrive in diverse or educational opportunities, always adapting to new environments. Furthermore, nursing is one of those jobs appreciated by those too weak, defenseless, or sick to help themselves, where personable treatment and human interaction is needed. It takes one thing to be knowledgeable and experienced, but another thing entirely to apply emotions and feelings to treatment, such as intimate contact with others, or attentiveness and sensitivity to their needs. Nursing career is a profession of art and science governed by standards demonstrating compassion, integrity, and respect to those they serve. Nurses are responsible and held accountable in upholding the standards of “Code of Ethics” set by the American Nursing Association (ANA, 2001, 2015). As the Healthcare Network evolves and becomes more complex so too must nursing change to meet the demands and needs of the people they serve. Advancing down the educational pathway allows nurses to have the opportunity to increase their knowledge in order to meet the needs and demands.
