The Hope of the Future
Charites are fundamental necessities that advance and strengthen our society further into the future. They bring communities the hope and dreams to do the impossible. City of Hope is a non-profit organization that benefits sick people in need (Wikipedia 1). While there are many organizations that specialize in this line of work, City of Hope is one of the most resourceful and helpful charities. City of Hope is best known as a Cancer Treatment Center (Wikipedia 1). It is our job as members of the community to support these organizations.

The funding that charities receive allow advances in technology, science, and medicine allowing greater hope for the future. Donating gives these charities the ability to continue research and help fight against disease. City of Hope is currently located in the City of Duarte in San Gabriel Valley, California (Wikipedia 2). The association purchased ten acres of land after raising sufficient funds (Wikipedia 2). This organization has come a long way to be where they are now. Opening January 11, 1914 it originally consisted of two tents, one for patients and one for caregivers (Wikipedia 2). City of Hope is over 100 years old and has accomplished many things. It is a wonder to see how much this charity expanded over the course of a century. The success of City of Hope is astounding. According to Health.USnews City of Hope is the best nationally ranked hospital in two adult specialties. Health.USnews also reports it is the 13th best regional hospital in California and 6th in the Los Angeles metro area. This association provides a protective and trusting environment that attracts people to go there in times of need. City of Hope has the 12th best cancer scorecard in the nation (Health.USnews 1). The hope that this charity gives coincides with the name it has received. City of Hope not only helps people through treatments but offers many jobs to a diverse collection of individuals.

This is the highest designation awarded by the National institutions that lead the way in cancer research, treatment, prevention, and education (City of Hope 2). This organization does so much in exploring new frontiers and advancing our research and development. From clinical trials of drugs and treatments, to studies on cancer survivors, clinical investigators work together on improving the lives of patients throughout the world (City of Hope 2). City of Hope writes “Clinical Trials involve volunteer patients and are crucial components to developing treatments that save lives”. A huge amount of today’s treatment therapies are based on the findings of previous clinical trials (City of Hope 2). Without the volunteers that bravely allow research on their bodies, society would not be as advanced in medicine as it is today. City of Hope has three manufacturing facilities that enable investigators to manufacture promising new therapies without the high cost and delays encountered by other research centers (City of Hope 1). All of these buildings allow this organization to focus on many sicknesses at once. Many of their breakthroughs have transformed the landscape of modern medicine, their research made possible the widely used cancer fighting drugs, Herceptin, Rituxan, and Avastin (City of Hope 2). At any time they have more than 30 investigational new drug applications available (City of Hope 2). City of Hope has access to a lot more than other research facilities. This access allows for breakthroughs in science and medicine never before seen. Research done at City of Hope and its famous Beckman Research Institute has greatly improved the lives of men, women, and children throughout the world (City of Hope 1). City of Hope has fundamentally advanced the world’s understanding of life-threatening diseases (City of Hope 1). Without this charity many lives may have never been saved.

A community is to help and support each other to be successful. Everyone is involved in a certain community regardless of anything. A community I am commit with is CAMP from CSUMB which stands for College Assistance Migrant Program. My community is a federally funded program that assists first year freshmen who have a migrant background and students whose parents are seasonal farmworkers. CAMP assist their students with many useful services such as with a grant of up to 1,200 dollars. My community is very important to me for the reason they are guiding me to be successful while encouraging me to graduate from college. In my community we tend to communicate really often such as in the article "Learning to Serve" by Toni Mirabelli. As in the article, my community also communicates by using various literacy such as writing, reading , and speaking.

I came out of the Geography of Hope conference feeling like I had experienced a life altering event. It is hard to verbalize the experience as my intellect was involved but my subconscious benefited the most. The goal of the conference was to inspire “right action”, and not to lose hope; I feel that in my case the conference succeeded beyond that. Besides inspiring right action and hope, the conference left me with a sense of inner-peace, joy, unity, where the truth about our ancestors is not a burden, but a guide to better understand ourselves and the environment we inhabit.
