I sit in my small, blue, straight backed seat and stare across the large dark tent. The tent has large yellow, blue and green stripes that taper up to a large point at the very top of the gigantic circus tent. There is a potent smell of popcorn, people, and circus animals wafting through the large, but enclosed, space. One person is illuminated in a small circle of yellowish light. A young girl, about 17 years old, is standing in the center of the ring, swinging giant hula hoops around her arms, one leg and part of her upper body. She is very graceful and majestic, almost swan like. She is dressed in a short, pale pink dress with pink ribbons wrapped tightly on her ankles and legs. The girl is spinning in circles while moving the hula hoops …show more content…
I see a table, chairs, a small kitchen, a bed, the remnants of blood on the floor. There is light streaming through the windows of the small trailer. Trailer? Why am I in a trailer? How did I get here? When? Why? The questions flow to my mind like water off a waterfall. Quickly and unstopping. Then I remembered. I was in Marie’s trailer at the circus. The circus. Marie. Where was she? The last time I saw her she…… Another thought hit me. The small girl laying on the floor of the trailer, the blood, and the smell of gas. She was still alive. I could hear the sound of her heavy breathing. But where could she be? If she had moved up by her own free will then she would have woken me up, but she didn’t. Anyway, she couldn’t have recovered from such an awful injury as that in such a short amount of time. What time is it anyway? Just then I hear a noise coming from outside, like the sound of footsteps on gravel. Run or hide? To run or not to run, that is the question? I laugh to myself, even though this is not the time for being funny, I can still quote Shakespeare. Hide I decide. I will go into the closet and see who is coming. It could be a lead. The person could be coming to make sure that he did his job correctly. I decided to go into the closet and surprise the person when they came through the door. Just as I am closing the closet door, a man walks through the front door of the trailer. The man is tall with broad shoulders and …show more content…
There must be some kind of code on it because there are weird patterns of dots on the card. “Look,” I say. “There is some kind of code on this card. Something like braille. See there are bumps all over it.” “This is interesting. We should look into this and see if it is braille. Then we might learn something important, like Mr. John Longleaf is blind.” He said to me. I look at his face while he talks. The muscles all move in time, like a pattern, and his jaw twitches every time he takes a breath. If I am watching him this closely then I must not trust him yet. I am watching for signs of a lie. “If he is blind then he must have an accomplice. Oh look, we are crossing into NYC. We will be at longriver in a few minutes. Be on the lookout for anything out of place.” “Look!” he says. “There is the house.” It’s a large brick house with a slated roof and a long, winding, driveway lined with tall, thick hedges. For privacy. He is probably a very secretive man. “Big house” Lt. Davis says. “he must have a lot of money. I wonder where he got it all. And more importantly why he is interested in Marie.” “I wonder……….” Lt. Davis stops the car, and we get out. We walk quickly up the short walkway to the front door. “Normally it’s ladies first, but I’ll make an exception in this case.” Lt. Davis knocks on the door. The knock is powerful and booming, and somehow it sounds like a herd of
I. Intro. - Imagine you are sitting home one night with nothing to do. Your parents have gone away for the weekend and there is absolutely no one around. So you sit around that night watching TV for awhile but find nothing on worth watching. You go on upstairs to your room and get ready for bed. Turn off the lights, lay down, and close your eyes. All of a sudden you here a crash of glass in your kitchen. You rush to your feet and put your ear to the door listening to what’s going on downstairs. You begin to hear the voice of two men as they start going through the living room, making their way to the stairs, right outside your room. What do you do? You aren’t going to confront them since its just you—remember you thought you heard two of them right? Well you are really stuck in your room and all you can do is sit there hoping that they leave soon and don’t harm you. Now if it were at my house things would be a little bit different. For starters I would get out my shotgun from my closet and begin to see what is gin on down stairs.
A circus is a magical place where it seems like nothing negative exists. Though accidents in the circus are rare, they happen. For example, in June of 2013, “ Aerialist Sara Gyyard Guillot, 31, fell 94 feet in Las Vegas and died before she got to the hospital” (providence.journal.com). Even more stories of death-defying acts ending in certain death have appeared over the years. Circuses can fill people with joy, but tragedy can strike at any moment. Just like Sara Guillot, the narrator’s mother in the story “The Leap” by Louise Erdrich, she thrived in the life of a circus performer. In the story, the reader walks through the misfortune of wind striking a circus performance, the narrator defines the astonishing achievement of her mother and how her mother handled her life even after the lightning struck. The narrator likewise demonstrates to the reader why she traveled back home to her mother using the literary element personification. In the story, “ The Leap” by Louise Erdrich, personification assists to
I opened the door to the garage, instantly the smell of death filled my nose. I looked around the garage, looking for that stupid man. I spotted him in a chair, slumped, by the staircase. How dare he be so upset.
In E.B. White?s The Ring of Time, the author gives a narrative account of his trip to a circus rehearsal where he describes a fascinating scene of a young girl practicing a horse act for an upcoming show. As a writer, he feels it is his obligation to record the events he is witnessing, and convey this to his readers without leaving anything out. However difficult this may be, the beautiful and fleeting moment is something he wishes to ultimately capture. When he arrives on the scene, White senses something magical about the surroundings of this circus as it undergoes a rehearsal, but he is primarily fixed on a young woman who passes by him. The young ?cleverly proportioned, deeply browned by the sun, dusty, eager, and almost naked'; girl is the one thi...
The darkness of her bedroom crept into her body. As time progressed the sounds of the evening grew louder leaving her in a state of fear. Amongst the dark room she would see the shadow of someone standing outside her bedroom window. She didn’t know why someone would want to hurt her. Afraid to tell her parents she found refuge underneath the sheets of her bed. After several sleepless nights she spoke to her mother about the mysterious person outside her window. Her mother shrugged it off and told her that no one was there and not to worry. Her mother believed that this was either her imagination or eating too close to her bedtime. However, Elyn was determined to catch this mysterious man. Next, she enlisted the help of her brother Warren. Frightened they hid in the closet waiting to capture the bandit. Unfortunately, this heroic attempt was unsuccessful as the bandit never revealed himself to anyone but her. Soon it became apparent to everyone that no one was outside her window. But, these feelings of a watchful eye never fled her. As a result, Elyn spent many nights terrified underneath her sheets only falling a sleeping from
Writing on this topic, the old Schoolhouse Rock song “Three Ringed Circus” comes to mind. In the song, a young boy describes the system of government, like the title suggests, as a three ringed circus. Each ring connects to each other, with a bit of their own ring in that of the others. The rings are separate and whole, with a bit of control over what happens in the other rings. This metaphor accurately describes the system of checks and balances in the American government, to keep one of the “rings” of the federal government from taking total control. Though the Supreme Court has the final say on the constitutionality on any legislature from Congress or the President, each of those branches has their own different forms of control over the
11:14 p.m.-I slowly ascend from my small wooden chair, and throw another blank sheet of paper on the already covered desk as I make my way to the door. Almost instantaneously I feel wiped of all energy and for a brief second that small bed, which I often complain of, looks homey and very welcoming. I shrug off the tiredness and sluggishly drag my feet behind me those few brief steps. Eyes blurry from weariness, I focus on a now bare area of my door which had previously been covered by a picture of something that was once funny or memorable, but now I can't seem to remember what it was. Either way, it's gone now and with pathetic intentions of finishing my homework I go to close the door. I take a peek down the hall just to assure myself one final time that there is nothing I would rather be doing and when there is nothing worth investigating, aside from a few laughs a couple rooms down, I continue to shut the door.
...e red lady blows a light, grayish puff of smoke in my direction and my eyes begin to twitch. My two brown eyelids flutter awake, and I slowly become aware of my surroundings. It is a late night in the city, and I can hear the streetlight buzzing above me. I roll onto my stomach and find the little girl in the same state as I had earlier, coughing incessantly. My stomach growls, and the car tires circle rhythmically on the warm, wet pavement. I awake from one nightmare, and continue to combat the real struggles in my life.

“Come over here, Buddy We are going on an adventure!” Excited she ran after me. It was as if she could actually understand me. I took one final look into my hideout before I shut the door, for wherever I was going or headed, I surely wasn’t going to be returning. Even though I spent most of my time down there being afraid of dying, it was the only safe place I could go and I will miss that place. It had been my home for so long, and probably was where I would have been spending the rest of my short lived life if I hadn’t felt this sense of uneasiness. I sighed deeply, and began shutting the door. “Calm down, Buddy”, I muttered as he was barking at something. He had a tendency to bark at objects and things that actually never existed, so I didn’t think twice about it. However when I turned around, I laid my eyes on something, or rather yet someone.
As a kid I always dreamed about running away to the circus-not because I wanted to perform or even that I wanted to get away-I just wanted to play with the animals. I wanted to pet the lions, feed the elephants and ride the horses. So when the circus came to town once a year I was in total bliss. I remember asking my mom almost every hour if we could drive by the set up so I could check the progress of the majestic tent. But the circus was different for me in 5th grade. Although my day started with the typical excitement, it ended when we parked the car. I saw flyers being passed out to people and being placed on the windshields of near cars. I grabbed one that dropped on the ground. I was shocked: lions in small cages, horses with bloody hoofs, elephants being beat with electric prods. And there it was, stamped on the elephant’s headdress “The Greatest Show on Earth”.
She slammed the door behind her. Her face was hot as she grabbed her new perfume and flung it forcefully against the wall. That was the perfume that he had bought for her. She didn't want it anymore. His voice coaxed from the other side of the door. She shouted at him to get away. Throwing herself on the bed and covering her face with one of his shirts, she cried. His voice coaxed constantly, saying Carol, let me in. Let me explain.' She shouted out no!' Then cried some more. Time passed with each sob she made. When she caught herself, there was no sound on the other side of the door. A long silence stood between her and the door. Maybe she had been too hard on him, she thought. Maybe he really had a good explanation. She hesitated before she walked toward the door and twisted the handle. Her heart was crying out to her at this moment. He wasn't there. She called out his name. "Thomas!" Her cries were interrupted by the revving of an engine in the garage. She made it to the window in time to see his Volvo back out the yard. "Thomas! Thomas....wait!" Her cries vanished into thin air as the Volvo disappeared around the bend. Carol grew really angry all of a sudden. How could he leave? He'll sleep on the couch when he gets back. Those were her thoughts.
My experience watching a live theatre performance on stage was a fascinating one, most especially since it was my first time. I attended a staged performance of “The History Boys” in a small theatre called “The Little Theatre of Alexandria” at 8:00 pm on Wednesday June 8, 2016 in Alexandria, Virginia. The overall production of the play was a resounding experience for me particularly the performance of the actors and the design of the scene made the play seem real.
Once the ringmaster steps into the ring and guides the animals into their positions the audience knows the circus is about to start. A circus is a traveling group of acrobats, trained animals, and clowns that perform in a tent for money. In the past, the circus began with only a few traveling entertainers that moved from one village to the next singing songs and bringing stories to life. Now circuses have both human and animal performers, they travel from town to town in different states and perform a variety of tricks and stunts. In spite of circuses being fun to attend, the animals are constantly being abused, through isolation, psychological torment, and physical torture.
