Based on the results of the first test my leadership style is: Transformational. My score was a 61 out of a possible 80. The transformational leadership is composed of four categories: idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation and individual consideration. The idealized influence component is used to describe leaders who are exceptional role models to other members in their teams. I strongly believe that having the practical skills necessary for a career in nursing, or in preparation of a project or assignment are key for accomplishing tasks at hand. In mastering the skills that are used in the workforce, you are better able to help the organization or team as a whole. As someone who wishes to pursue a career in nursing, having the necessary traits and skills are crucial especially for patient satisfaction. I am someone who is most definitely able to connect with someone on an emotional level, however I think knowing and mastering the necessary skills to care for that patient and whatever situation they may be going through are is just as important, and would be valuable for the employer as well. In addition to your employer utilizing this theory would allow you to better educate your fellow co-workers, and assist them in preparing potential patients who may require certain skills sets for …show more content…
I believe that these traits are very important to have because as a future nurse it's important to be resourceful for those who need the extra push when working to accomplish their goals. There are several people who have the potential to begin working towards their goals, but sometimes they lack the motivation, or even the belief that they are able to achieve them. I not only feel that I can be of guidance, but I could also help them see what type of leadership styles they have within themselves. Perhaps they have certain styles, but need someone to make them realize that. After completing this survey, I myself had no realization that I exhibited certain leadership qualities that were vastly different from other ones that are also present. I was also able to see that I needed to work on specific areas of leadership such as learning to delegate and maintain some sense of control when working with others. At times I tend to take on too many responsibilities, even though the more practical thing to do, would be to take control and delegate my responsibilities to others. According to Riggio (2009), the most popular theory of leadership is transformational. Many believe that these leaders get the job done through inspiring, modeling, and helping others develop their skills as leaders. Research provides clear evidence that groups lead by transformational leaders have higher levels of performance and satisfaction than groups led by other types of leaders (Riggio, 2009). Clear communication is vital to transformational leadership and in order to succeed further, one will need to work on their own skills, and set aside time and space for personal development (Manktelow, 2005).
Bass (1990) states that transformational leadership is identified by different patterns of behavior. Firstly , transformational leadership delivers the charisma to be a leader in order to gain respect and trust. Secondly, the characteristics of a leader show efforts to change a purpose of the transformation process and to effectively communicate. Finally, transformational leadership proposes that leaders treat employees individually to show them attention and provide them coaching and advice to show that you care about your employees. However, Wang and Howell (2010) claim that transformational leadership is in every individual.This means an individual can develop their potential to enhance their abilities and skills to improve and overcome any weaknesses. In relation to group work transformational leadership helps to grow common values and beliefs, and to inspire group members to reach their group goals. In this type of situation, leaders treat equally towards members and to make them feel comfortable. However, on occasions problems occur during team work which puts a leader into a situation to overcome the condition. For example, if one of my team members has no belief in me to lead the group, my attitude towards the group and the member will change as they have shown a lack of confidence and interest in teamwork. According to Novicevic, Harvey, Buckley, Brown & Evans (2006) explains that authentic leadership is when a leader shows their individual responsibility in what they were responsible for in their organization. Novicevic, Harvey, Buckley, Brown & Evans (2006) discusses a particular style of leadership which is the matrix of executive leadership. They are influenced by their family of origin, their education, their work experience, and the people they interact with. For Ms. Eckert this has all brought her to her current career position and approach to leadership. She holds leadership not only as the challenge and difficult task that many people today see it as. She also views it as an amazing opportunity to influence others. Ms. Eckert also noted the importance of coaching others, both in their nursing development, and in their leadership potential. This is particularly important as we are facing rapid change within the nursing field. There should be a certain amount of mentorship to learn from those who have experience and to develop one’s own skill. For Ms. Eckert some of the main elements she discussed as contributing to a strong leader are the willingness to coach others, emotional intelligence, a sense of spirituality, valuing diversity, and openness to change and innovation. Whether it is in healthcare or in a corporate office, leadership is about having a vision and making it into a reality (Parker & Hyrask, 2011). In healthcare with all the changes that are constantly happening it is imperative that our leaders in nursing continue to evolve and continue to prioritize in their nursing units. To continue to embrace your career as a nurse leader it is essential to always make sure they have professional development and continue to provide great care for all their patients (Parker & Hyrask, 2011). During my interview with Regina Martinez, BS RN and currently an Assistant Director of a home health agency, I discovered her leadership style matched the above quote. Martinez had extensive experience in management prior to joining the medical field. As a single working mother, she worked her way up from waitress to manger of a popular seafood restaurant. However, her dream had always been to become a nurse and she began her medical career as a certified nurse’s aide (CNA), while working through college. She graduated from nursing school with a Bachelor’s degree in Science and has been a Registered Nurse (RN) for more than two decades. She quickly earned the respect of doctors and fellow nurses, becoming a Charge Nurse on the floors she worked. She has worked as Medical Surgery nurse, emergency room, and as Director of Nursing for home health and long-term care facilities where she was responsible for over 150 employees.
One of the challenges facing nurses today is learning how to be an effective leader. Assessing and analyzing the style of leadership the nurse possesses is the first step in facing the challenge. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and understand the characteristics of my style of leadership from an assessment performed by Gallup Strength Finders and DiSC and compare the strengths I have in common with Eleanor Roosevelt. For me to be an effective leader, I must first evaluate my strengths. I took the Gallup 2.0 Strength Finder report which showed my strengths in an insight and action planning guide.

Leadership does not always come with a title or prestige. Every nurse has within themselves qualities that make them a great leader. Leadership by definition, “is a combination of intrinsic personality traits, learned leadership skills, and characteristics of the situation (Cherry& Jacob (2013 p. 335). A leader is one who has the capacity and skills to direct or encourage others in efforts to achieve an outcome. I recently completed a self-assessment on my perceived leadership abilities. The survey was called the Nurse Manager Skills Inventory (Nurse Manager Leadership Partnership, 2008). It consists of four content areas of which I will address and identify my strengths and weaknesses.

Professionally speaking, these are just some of the qualities that nurse leaders seek out and often gravitate toward while building strong and dynamic professional relationships. A great nurse leader is a great listener, communicator and an inspirational, change-maker, empowering others to help lead the way toward best practices in patient care (Davis, 2017, para. 4). Further, the supportive nurse manager shoulders other complex responsibilities such as establishing goals and objectives, monitoring for results and assessing performance, further ensuring safe and effective patient care.
