Most sports fans can agree that some of the best moments in sports are Cinderella stories. The 2004 Red Sox, the 2001 Patriots, and unfortunately the 2007 Giants are regarded as some of the most exciting stories in sports. Sports fans love upsets so much that during March Madness, approximately 25% of Americans watch the games at work and around 7.5% of people don’t even bother to show up at all. On top of this, over 250 million dollars are estimated to be spent on legal gambling throughout the tournament. Across America, no other sport is gambled on purely based on picking major upsets. Now this is just America, Cinderella stories don’t just happen here, think about soccer, the world’s most watched sport. In 2004, Greece took down Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal in the European Finals. They …show more content…
So long story short, Cinderella stories are fun and they add an element of excitement to world of sports, but what if they weren’t a part of sports? Of course there will always be ‘upsets’ but currently, some of Europe’s elite soccer clubs are holding meetings to discuss the future of the sport. It seems that the elite clubs such as Arsenal and Manchester United are actually trying to create a super league consisting of the best teams around the world. Although a European Super league provides an excellent opportunity for the elite clubs in Europe, in the long run, it may end up hurting the world’s favorite game. Alright, let’s break down this so called ‘super league’ to see the opportunities that are available for such a concept. Once an initial report of a ‘secret’ meeting about a super league was unveiled, reports of who else was involved and which teams would be included surfaced all
Rick Reilly, in his ESPN column (2007), contends that sports competitions are more than simple games, instead, they are events capable of bringing people together in unique ways. He reinforces his contention by integrating inspirational anecdotal evidence, bold syntax, and unvarnished diction. Reilly’s purpose is to point out the importance and humanity of sports in order to convince a college professor and readers of sports magazines that sports writing is indeed an advanced and valuable profession. He assumes a humorous tone (“...most important- sports is the place where beer tastes best”) for an audience of sports magazine readers, but more specifically, a professor that told him that he was “better than sports.”
Each March, there arises some kind of brouhaha across the country or at least within the four walls of colleges across the United States. The cause is the highly regarded single-elimination tournament officially known as the NCAA Men’s Division 1 Championship, and colloquially as the March Madness. As described by Chris Suellentrop on the 6th Floor Blogs of the “New York Times” magazine, this “is the greatest sporting event of the year, and in particular, the tournament’s first weekend serves up the most entertaining four days in sports.” (Suellentrop 2011)
One of the top sporting events in the world is considered to be the NCAA March Madness tournament. This tournament is ranked third just behind the Super Bowl and FIFA World Cup. It’s unbelievable to think that one of the top sporting events in the world is college athletics. You have other professional sports like basketball, baseball, hockey and NASCAR, but their championships still don’t compare to the NCAA championship. March madness is so popular that global firms Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc. believe that companies are expected to lose about $1.2 billion because of every hour of work that employees are watching games instead of working (Koba, 2014).
College basketball comes to a truly extraordinary ending each year in March. 68 of the best teams in the nation draw the attention of millions. Viewers are awed by the sheer amount of games played and the only three weeks they are played in. They are mesmerized trying to fill out the perfect bracket and possible win huge prizes and bragging rights over their friends. They are awestruck by enormous upsets and rally behind underdog teams. Many people may argue that the NCAA tournament and March Madness is just another sporting event, but in reality it is a widely popular competition that is viewed by millions of fans and even non-sport viewers year after year.
The researcher Ross goes onto talking about how the leagues have structured their specific leagues to a certain amount of teams and their aren’t allowed to be teams added to their leagues without a vote by the owners and it has to be a majority vote. Because of this leagues have smaller outputs which then have teams having higher prices for things. This causes communities to pay more to have the league want to expand in their area. Teams that are already in that area almost force the community to give them more money or they will relocate with the owner’s approval. Because of the scarcity of teams cities fear the loss of a team so much that they give them whatever they want ...
De Varona, D. (2003). ‘M’s’ in football: Myths, management, marketing, media and money. A reprise. Soccer & Society, 4, 7-13.
Soccer (Football) is said to be the world’s most popular sport in the world, USA are one the few countries where soccer isn't the main sport. The beautiful game is a game of passion; fans coming together to form a ‘religion’ but all this fun and excitement come down to money. The football business is one that generates a great deal of revenue from betting to tickets, TV and shirts sponsorship and transfer deals. You can argue it’s the richest sport in the world. Here in America we are late boomers to the soccer craze, which is why our league isn't as strong as other like the Barclays Premier League, LA LIGA, Ligue 1, Bundesliga, Serie A etc. In the year 1996, MLS was founded and the association was not favorably disposed to by the general public. As time went by, more Americans accepted and grew interest in sport. The Major League Soccer and United States Soccer Association (USSA) have since had hard time attracting revenue due to numerous problems.
Major league Soccer. I am not sure what league structure the PQL has decided to use, but since it is a new league the single entity structure might be best suited for the PQL. The MLS currently uses the single entity structure and it is important to learn from them how to use the structure properly. The MLS is responsible for signing all players and determining each players wage and what team that player will play on. In this particular case the plaintiffs argued that the MLS and its investors were acting as a single entity and were thereby lessening the value of its players’ services and thus, trying to monopolize the Division 1 soccer player market. The MLS argued that its investors were acting together so it’s impossible to conspire against each other. The case went to the district court and ruled in favor of the MLS. Since soccer is played around the world and there are many different leagues it was determined that the MLS was not a monopoly, that every player has the opportunity to shop their talents to other teams around the
In July of 2000 Luis Figo shocked the world with what was then a world record €60 million transfer (a transfer is when a player moves teams), the equivalent of almost $82 million. Back then, as one of the greatest in the history of soccer, the record transfer fee was understand. Just this summer, Gareth Bale moved to the same team as Figo had just 13 years before, Real Madrid, for a world-record €100 million, more than $135 million. Tottenham lost their star player, and Real overpaid by tens of millions: this is what the culture of soccer has become. While some argue that big clubs need the revenue they get from spending big, UEFA, the federation in charge or european soccer, needs to restrict free-spending by clubs because small clubs are left powerless to retain their key players, which leads to a lack of revenue that smaller clubs need more, and the money spent and received has a direct effect on one’s success.
College is a time for young people to develop and grow not only in their education, but social aspects as well. One of the biggest social scenes found around college campuses are athletic events, but where would these college sports be without their dedicated athletes? Student athletes get a lot of praise for their achievements on the field, but tend to disregard the work they accomplish in the classroom. Living in a college environment as a student athlete has a great deal of advantages as well as disadvantages that affect education and anti-intellectualism.
Some schools force students to participate in organized school sports. However, I believe that schools should not make this a requirement. Some students may have medical conditions, family situations that don't allow them to participate in organized school sports, or they simply may not have the time.

...n fans know it is still about the game, there wouldn't be money to be made. Many may even have faith that even hen owners invest in clubs as a business, they too are still captivated by the pitch week in and week out.
Down two with six seconds to go fatigue had taken it tolls on the players. With little energy left; over time was not an option. I knew I had to go for the win. I walk on the floor confident of my ability that was until the whistle blew quickly turning my confident to butterflies. As I fought to get open I quickly saw the ball coming my way. As I rose for a jump shot time itself began to stay still. An in flesh everything became silent. As I watch the ball leave my hand I envisioned greatness; sure the ball was on its way in I started to celebrate that was until I hear the announcer say my teammate tip in miss shot to win us the game. Mix with emotion I celebrate with my teammate. “Ok guys, we have 24 hours until tip off. Get some rest because this is going to be the biggest game of your life. Let’s bring this championship back to Barton College. Go Bulldogs and Goodnight!” Why few players stay in the lobby to hang out I took it talk upon to work on my game and reflect on the semifinal game that just took place. At basketball games you will notice how there are all sorts of fans attending the game.
