Sports movies deliver chills, thrills and goose bumps when done right. They can bring cheers during triumph and tears upon defeat. Boxing is one of those sports that has intrigued people for years and some of the greatest movies of all time have come from within the ring. While everyone has a different list, here are what some consider to be the top five greatest boxing movies of all time.
#5 - Cinderella Man
Despite being a bit of a box office disappointment in 2005, Cinderella Man went on to achieve a great deal through the crowds and the Academy. Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard brought an uplifting story full of cheers to the big screen starring Oscar winners Russell Crowe and Renee Zellweger. The movie highlights the biopic

Upon marrying an Irish woman that publicly calls him a coward, he decides love is worth fighting for. The movie was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and director John Ford won a Best Director Oscar for the film in 1952.
#3 - Million Dollar Baby
This is perhaps the most decorated boxing movie of all time and rightfully so. It won the 2004 Academy Award for Best Picture and Clint Eastwood won Best Director. On top of this, Clint Eastwood was nominated for Best Actor and Morgan Freeman and Hillary Swank received acting honors. The movie details a bond that is developed between a boxer and trainer inside and out of the ring following a horrific accident inside the ring.
#2 - Raging Bull
You cannot talk about boxing movies without mentioning Raging Bull. Robert De Niro won the 1980 Academy Award for his impersonation of real life boxer Jake LaMotta. The movie details the struggles of LaMotta with violence inside and out of the ring. It has often been regarded as one of the great films in history thanks to the directing of Martin Scorses and the supporting acting of Joe Pesci. The American Film Institute placed it at number four on the list of the 100 greatest movies of all
The Great Depression of the 1930’s caused widespread poverty, but the popular culture of the time did not reflect this. People wanted to escape from this harsh time so movies, dancing and sports became very popular. Radios broadcasted boxing matches and boxers became stars. The heavyweight champion James J. Braddock aka “Cinderella Man,” gained popularity. James Braddock gained fame by winning many fights and proving everyone wrong when they said he was too old and couldn’t win.
Antwone Fisher in my opinion is probably the most impactful movie I have ever seen. People may say, “ What a good movie” but I say “what a good man”.
All in all, this film is the dark side of the American dream. Brian De Palma did an excellent job at creating memorable scenes, such as the scene earlier explained and the famous ending with Pacino reciting “Say hello to my little friend”. Throughout the film some confusion is made due to frequent slips but overall the theme is consistent and remains consistent with the help of a strong cast. Without a doubt Al Pacino was the main star of the film and it probably wouldn’t have been such a success if another star was assigned his character. It’s hard to see anyone else playing Tony Montana after Al Pacino’s performance. This film, though full of violence and crime, protrudes moments of humor and controversial situations. It’s a momentous film created in the 80’s that is still considered a classic gangster film in today’s generation.
With the help of superb editing, sound, mise en scene, and cinematography, this film cannot be topped. The fist scene of the movie creates an atmosphere that helps the viewer know that he/she will enjoy this wonderful classic. Throughout the movie there are surprises and fun that makes this a movie that people will want to watch again and again. Gene Kelly said it best when he said, "Dignity, always dignity. " That is what this movie has from beginning to end, dignity.
I believe the reason that, 'The Godfather', is such a great film is because it lets audiences decide whether they like the characters or not. Too many movies made about organized crime begin with some seemingly random act of violence. 'The Godfather', however, lets it be known from the start to judge the characters in the film based on what type of person they are instead of the criminal activities they may engage in.
In an age where Hollywood blockbusters mainly consist of remakes, sequels, mediocre comedies, action films focused more on computer-generated effects than more genuine effects, and horror films relying more on jump scares than suspense, I personally side with older films, particularly those released a couple of decades ago. When someone is asked about their favorite movie, many people's favorites will have been made in the 1980s, including Star Wars Episode V, Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, and Die Hard. For me, one of my favorite films is the 1982 release First Blood, starring Sylvester Stallone. This movie was the first and most critically acclaimed film in the series, as the following sequels and remakes have met with negative critical reception, mostly because they focused more on how many objects can be blown up within the running time than of a coherent plot or a cast of interesting characters. From reading the general consensus at the Rotten Tomatoes review for First Blood, the critics involved share my sentiment that it is a “much darker, more sensitive film than the sequels it spawned” ("First Blood (Rambo: First Blood) - Rotten Tomatoes").
The continued enjoyment of the movie makes it a timeless story. One that endless generations can watch and still relate to. This beloved film has touched many hearts and continues to do so. It is my personal favorite movie and has been since I was a little girl because there is some kind of magic in it that
I have finally answered the hardest question ever posed following what church do you go to when asked by a religious parent of a friend when you're and atheist, what are your favorite movies. I have listed shaw shank as my favorite even though i don't know if i actually like it more than the top 5 movies listed. I really do enjoy the movie though so i will just use it as my answer when asked the question. fight club could be traded with shaw shank as the story line is amazing and I'm a hoe for a good plot twist and a movie that makes you have to watch it again.I just watched memento today, July 4th 2017, and the same can be said for it. I believe it should go in my top 3 because the way it was filmed as the double story line meeting in the
Javier Bardem gives a brilliant performance too, obviously, I am not the only person that thinks this, as he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance. The Coen brothers also took home top honors from the Academy for Best Motion Picture, Best Achievement in Directing, Best Writing (adapted screenplay), and Best Achievement in Editing (as Roderick Jaynes). No Country for Old Men was also nominated for Best Achievement in Sound Editing and Best Cinematography. It is a dark tale of three men from different walks of life whose paths
Creed Since 1976, the Rocky franchise had entertained us in the life and struggles of becoming a professional boxer. It was more than just the rise of the boxing hierarchy, it was the personal struggles from within ranging from personal pride or ideologies to even personal fears. Nearly 40 years later since the first film, a new generation of boxers inherit the torch of their predecessors in rising to be the next best boxer. This movie also sets a new chapter in the Rocky franchise as the movie “Creed” is both a seventh sequel but also a spin-off of Rocky.
Lions for Lambs certainly fills this order, with a truly stellar all-star cast, comprised of Hollywood favorites for both younger and older audiences. Academy award winners, Robert Redford. (Who also directed this film), and Meryl Streep gave flawless performances as the wise professor and honor bound reporter. Tom Cruise delivered a very convincing enactment of a portentous politician and even the lesser known members of the cast gave spot on performances. From Andrew Garfield’s disillusioned college student, to Michael Peña and Derek Luke’s portrayals of the brave and honor bound young soldiers. The acting and characterizations were spot on. Toting this believable and endearing group, portrayed to perfection, this motion picture could not have done a better job of conveying realistic and captivating characters. It is a shame that with so many
The classic tale of Cinderella is well known for the fight of overcoming great obstacles despite great odds. However, there are always a few ill-hearted people who go out of their way to cease any competition that they might face, as seen with Cinderella’s step-sisters. Samuel Jackson says is his distinguished quote, “The hunger of imagination…lures us to…the phantoms of hope,” to help develop a more defined view of a fairytale. The story of Cinderella fully embodies the ideals of a true fairytale by encompassing magic, hope, and struggle between good and evil throughout the duration of the plot.
Russell Crowe won the 2000 Best Actor Oscar for Gladiator, and in this movie, he doesn’t give anything less of a great performance. Crowe successfully buries his personality beneath Nash's, allowing the character to come alive and for the audience to see inside his mind. And, when it comes to the sequences showing Nash battling his demons, Crowe's performance is convincing. At the same time, Jennifer Connelly is wonderful as Alicia. She does well depicting a woman torn by love for and fear of the same man.
