Cinderella Man, a film written by Cliff Hollingsworth and Akiva Goldsman, is a plot about heart, grit, and determination. James J. Braddock is a boxer from the state of New Jersey, who broke his hand in the ring, forcing Braddock to give up boxing. Due to James’ reiteration of his boxing career, Braddock is forced to work as dock laborer in order to earn sufficient wages to support his wife and family. Braddock has a drive and ambition for the sport of boxing and deep down wishes to get back into boxing. Suddenly, Joe Gould, James’ past coach and mentor, offers Jim a position to fill in for a current boxer. Braddock’s contender is the number-two boxer in the nation, Corn Griffin. James’ grit and motivation allow Jim to propel past Griffin and shock the boxing world. Braddock uses his momentum to defeat more world-class boxers, granting Jim a nickname termed The Cinderella Man. With Braddock’s continuous victories, James gives himself an opportunity to fight the best boxer in the world, Max Baer. Just as The Cinderella Man has done in the past, Braddock shows no fear and magnificently defeats Baer. Braddock’s accomplishment earns him the heavyweight champion of the world. With James’

success, it allows James to support his family and live comfortably. Jim and his wife, Mae, are able to purchase a house and live in harmony for the rest of their lives.

Cinderella Man’s message shows that hard work and determination allow for the achievement of goals and success in life. The film contains a complete and well-developed storyline packed with intense scenes that keep the audience on the edge of their seats. Braddock’s determination and heart truly constructs the greatness of the film, Cinderella Man. Overall, the film is enjoyable and would be recommended to any audience. In fact, it would be helpful for many Americans to view, as some people would realize what it is like to work in order to achieve success. Cinderella Man can be connected to Upton Sinclair’s, The Jungle, as both pieces describe the difficulty of living during the Great Depression. In Cinderella Man, Braddock’s family is forced to survive on little income. James is expected to work with a broken hand, which causes Jim to miss work some days. Due to James missing work, James’ family struggles to survive on little to zero income. Also, Mae does not want James to get back into boxing, as boxing is a violent and risky sport. This places stress on James’ family and his relationship with Mae, but Jim has no choice due to financial concerns. In The Jungle, Jurgis sprains his ankle during work, causing Jurgis to remain at home for three months, receiving no pay. Also, Marija’s employer closes down, causing Marija to lose her job. With the job instability in Packingtown, it places stress on Jurgis’ family just as it does in Cinderella Man. Overall, Cinderella Man and The Jungle relate with the hardships of living with the Great Depression.
