La novela “Cien años de soledad” fue una obra escrita por Gabriel García Márquez durante dieciocho meses entre 1965 y 1966 en Ciudad de México y publicada por primera vez en 1967 en Buenos Aires. El ingenio para la redacción de esta obra surge en 1952 durante el viaje que ejecuta Gabriel García Márquez a su pueblo natal, Aracataca. No cabe duda que el lugar ficticio de Macondo, ambiente donde se desarrolla la obra, refleja muchas de las costumbres y anécdotas vividas por Gabriel García Márquez durante su infancia en antedicho pueblo, mostrando así un contexto histórico y social que se analizará a continuación.
El contexto histórico de la obra se puede ubicar en Colombia, a finales del siglo XIX y mediados del siglo XX. Tal y como se manifiesta en la novela, existían, dentro de la historia de Colombia, los partidos liberal y conservador, notablemente reconocidos por las múltiples guerras civiles que los enfrentaron. Es claro que Gabriel García Márquez refleja a dos personajes históricos de Colombia: Rafael Uribe Uribe, líder del partido liberal y Rafael Núñez, presidente colombiano líder del partido conservador. Muchas de las batallas descritas en la obra hacen referencia a batallas sangrientas de la guerra civil colombiana, como por ejemplo, la Guerra de los Mil Días. En la obra se describe, de igual manera, cómo se llevaría un sinnúmero de conflictos liderados principalmente por un personaje homólogo a Rafael Uribe Uribe: el coronel Aureliano Buendía.

Al ser Gabriel García Márquez un periodista europeo, su trabajo principal pudo haber sido el de narrar el día a día de una cruenta guerra como lo fue la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Esto, hipotéticamente hablando, pudo haber generado personajes en una nueva historia que describan directa o indirectamente el desarrollo de este conflicto.
En conclusión, se debe considerar que una mentalidad influenciada por una región europea hubiese fecundado un nuevo estilo literario, una nueva trama novelística, un nuevo léxico con nuevas expresiones originales de Europa y muy posiblemente un título diferente para la obra. Pero el desasosiego de los lectores más acérrimos pudo haber sido el nunca haber conocido un estilo literario tan único como lo fue el realismo mágico de Gabriel García Márquez.
Alfredo Corchado — is the author of the book named " Midnight in Mexico:A Reporter's Journey through a Country's Descent into Darkness”. We are, probably, all interested in finding out the facts, news, and gossips about Mexico. This country was always associated with something mysterious. For me personally, the title of the book seemed to be very gripping, I was interested in revealing the secrets of life in Mexico, thus I decided to read this book. I was really curious, what can Alfredo Corchado tell me about the life in this country, the country, where the constant massacre is the picture, people used to see. In his book, the author tells the reader about the real situations, which took place in Mexico, reveals the secrets of the people’s lives and tells the story from the “inside”. He describes the way he lives his life, and does his work. The " Midnight in Mexico: A Reporter's Journey through a Country's Descent into Darkness” is a memoir. Author tries to transform his own experience into the story line. Corchado shows the reader the darkest episodes of Mexican society, while relying on his own experience.
In 1949, Dana Gioia reflected on the significance of Gabriel García Márquez’s narrative style when he accurately quoted, “[it] describes the matter-of-fact combination of the fantastic and everyday in Latin American literature” (Gioia). Today, García Márquez’s work is synonymous with magical realism. In “Un Señor Muy Viejo con Alas Enormes,” the tale begins with be dramatically bleak fairytale introduction:
Colonial Latin American society in the Seventeenth Century was undergoing a tremendous amount of changes. Society was transforming from a conquering phase into a colonizing phase. New institutions were forming and new people and ideas flooded into the new lands freshly claimed for the Spanish Empire. Two remarkable women, radically different from each other, who lived during this period of change are a lenses through which many of the new institutions and changes can be viewed. Sor Juana and Catalina de Erauso are exceptional women who in no way represent the norm but through their extraordinary tales and by discovering what makes them so extraordinary we can deduce what was the norm and how society functioned during this era of Colonial Latin America.
In the South American storytelling tradition it is said that humans are possessed of a hearing that goes beyond the ordinary. This special form is the soul’s way of paying attention and learning. The story makers or cantadoras of old spun tales of mystery and symbolism in order to wake the sleeping soul. They wished to cause it to prick up its ears and listen to the wisdom contained within the telling. These ancient methods evolved naturally into the writings of contemporary Latin American authors. The blending of fantasy with reality to evoke a mood or emphasize elements of importance became known as magical realism, and was employed to great effect by Latin authors such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez in his novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude, and Rudolfo Anaya, in his work, Bless Me Ultima.
This novel is a story of a Chicano family. Sofi, her husband Domingo together with their four daughters – Esperanza, Fe, Caridad, and Loca live in the little town of Tome, New Mexico. The story focuses on the struggles of Sofi, the death of her daughters and the problems of their town. Sofi endures all the hardships and problems that come her way. Her marriage is deteriorating; her daughters are dying one by one. But, she endures it all and comes out stronger and more enlightened than ever. Sofi is a woman that never gives up no matter how poorly life treats her. The author- Ana Castillo mixes religion, super natural occurrences, sex, laughter and heartbreak in this novel. The novel is tragic, with no happy ending but at the same time funny and inspiring. It is full of the victory of the human spirit. The names of Sofi’s first three daughters denote the three major Christian ideals (Hope, Faith and Charity).
Familial influence can have a great impact on a protagonists’ life decisions and future, whether it be a lack of paternal guidance or cultural expectations. This can be seen in the life of Yunior, the protagonist in Junot Diaz’s Drown. Yunior immigrated to the USA from the Dominican Republic when he was little shortly after, his dad left the family and went to live with another woman. Style: The typical Magical- Realistic story of García Márquez placed in a familiar environment where supernatural things take place as if they were everyday occurrences. Main use of long and simple sentences with quite a lot of detail. "There were only a few faded hairs left on his bald skull and very few teeth in his mouth, and his pitiful condition of a drenched great-grandfather took away and sense of grandeur he might have had" (589).

A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a complex story about the author’s experience of poverty and hardship during the civil war in Colombia. Throughout Marquez’s late teen years, Colombia was plagued by social and economic problems. In 1946, Colombia’s problems grew into a violent rebellion that lasted for ten long years. “The violent war was named La Violencia or The Violence; it became the most bloodshed period in Colombia” (Bailey 4). Marquez’s choice of magic realism made it possible for him to place hidden messages in the story by creating a deeper connection to his readers. The intricate characters and scenes Marquez portrays in the story all have a significant relation on his emotions, his life, and his country during the tragic years of La Violencia.

El libro cuenta la historia de la familia Buendía en el pueblo de Macondo. El pueblo es fundado por diversas familias conducidas por José Arcadio Buendía y Úrsula Iguaran.
