A Chicago police officer has been accused of the sexual assault of a minor and he has been charged with felony criminal sexual assault. An article posted by the Chicago Tribune stated that the officer, Eugene Ciardullo, aged 51 was arrested in his home by officers from the Chicago police department. It later emerged that he was also employed as a security guard at the Chicago High School for Agricultural Studies where he befriended the girl. They exchanged contact information and communicated through the summer of her sophomore year (Briscoe, 2017). Their relationship went on to become physical from February until December 2016. They had various encounters with some being in empty parking lots and motel rooms throughout the duration of their relationship. It also emerged that the accused officer told the victim that he would lose his job, as well as, face jail time if they were caught. Additionally, the victim was instructed by the officer to say that they were just good friends to anyone who inquired about the nature of their relationship (Briscoe, 2017). …show more content…
According to Briscoe, (2017) Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos ordered that Officer Eugene Ciardullo be held on a $75,000 bond.
Should the defendant post bail, he will be ordered to surrender his passport and any firearms that he may have in his possession. Furthermore, Ciardullo is not allowed to have any communication or contact with any persons under the age of 18. This includes being barred from the internet (Briscoe, 2017). An investigation of the incident is being conducted by the Internal Affairs Office. After the investigation is complete, appropriate disciplinary measures will be given to the officer. As a police officer, Ciardullo has accumulated 40 or more complaints including excessive force and multiple personnel violations. As a consequence, he has served a ten day suspension from the police department due to some of those violations (Briscoe,
2017). The crime has brought a negative reputation upon the Chicago Police Department. Throughout Officer Ciardullo’s career, he has received various honorable mentions and some commendations (Briscoe, 2017). With being charged with such a serious allegation, it is likely to affect any future he might have should he serve time in jail. Police officers are mandated with the task of protecting and serving the community and for one of them to be charged with a felony sexual charge has the community feeling mistrust towards the officers. However, on the same note, the officers were quick to arrest their colleague and charge him accordingly, which shows that no person is above the law. The likelihood of such a crime happening again is high as individuals do not think past the actions they take. There have been several incidences involving older persons and minors all over the country. Parents and teachers alike have the responsibility of informing children of the dangers they might find while they go about their daily activities (Horng, 2017). They should make it their business to know who these children are talking to, where they hang out and so forth. When such a relationship is fostered then the minors will find it easier to discuss matters they would have held back on. It is important for students to understand the consequences of the actions they involve themselves in. While being sexually involved with older persons may seem right at a given period, it has grave consequences. This article brings out feelings of anger towards the police officer who took advantage of a young girl and engaged in a sexual relationship with knowing full well that she was a minor (Horng, 2017). He also asked the victim to downplay the extent of their relationship. She was instructed to answer anyone questioning their status that they were just friends. This went on for the duration of the relationship. As an officer of the law, he was well aware of the repercussions or his actions and this will have him serving time in jail with a higher chance of his dismissal from the Chicago police force.

This case involves a sophomore at a high school named Christine Franklin, who alleged that she was sexually harassed and abused by a teacher and sports coach by the name of Andrew Hill. These allegations were occurring from 1986-1988, a total of two years. These allegations included Hill having explicit conversations with Franklin, forcing her to kiss him, and forceful intercourse on school grounds. Franklin claimed that she let teachers and administrators know about the harassment and that other students were going through the same harassment. The result of telling the teachers and administrators was that nothing was done about the situation and even encouraged Franklin not

In 2005 NYPD Detective, first grade, James E. Griffith called internal affairs to report he was being pressured by a fellow officer to lie and take the blame during an internal inquiry for the mishandling of a homicide investigation by his unit (Goldstein, 2012). Another detective and union official claimed in his deposition that Griffin was a rat because he went to internal affairs instead of the union (Marzulli, 2013). According to the United States District Court Eastern District of New York’s memorandum of decision the retaliation was immediate, included adverse personnel actions and continued though out his career in different units until Detective Griffith was effectively forced to retire due to the harassment in 2009 (James Griffin v. the City of New York, n.d.). Griffin eventually filed a legal sit against The City of New York, the NYPD and two of the officers involved individually. This case study will analyze the incident, whistleblower laws and the ethical challenges involved.
In October of 1993, R.D.S., a Nova Scotian Black youth, was arrested by a white police officer and charged with assault on a police officer in the execution of duty, assault with intent to prevent the lawful arrest of another, and resisting his own arrest. In a Nova Scotia Youth Court, R.D.S. testified that he did not touch the police officer or assault him in any way. He stated that he spoke only to his cousin, who was being arrested by Constable Steinburg, to ask the nature of his arrest and whether or not to contact his mother. R.D.S. testified that Constable Steinburg told him to either "shut up" or face arrest. The youth argued that the police officer proceeded to place both himself and his cousin in a choke hold. Constable Steinburg maintained that R.D.S. assaulted him and obstructed his cousin's arrest. He made no reference to telling the youth to shut up or to placing either youth in a choke hold. (1)
“In the criminal justice system, sexually based offenses are considered especially heinous. In New York City, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit….” This short monologue is the opening for Dick Wolf’s fictional television show, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. This show follows the detectives of the Sixteenth Precinct in Manhattan, New York City through their lives and the cases they work day after day. In this unit, it is Detective Olivia Benson who has inspired me with her dedication and strength to her job and the real life connections that have been created from this character.
I chose to do my ride along with the Lexington Police Department. The police officer that I got to ride along with was Officer Ernesti. Officer Ernesti has an associates degree in criminal justice. After high school he attended Southeast Community College in Lincoln. He says that he wished he chose a different field to study. The reason is was because he got in a fight with a suspect and injured his arm. He was afraid that he did something severe to his arm that he would not be able to perform any police duty. If he would have had a different degree he could have fallen back to something that does not relate to criminal justice. Before getting hired by the Lexington Police Department in January of 2014 he worked in Gosper County for two years. During his time at Gosper County he was a K-9 handler.
Officers abusing their power can range from taking bribes, choosing who they decide to let go and who to prosecute, and even abusing their power by molestation. In July of 2009 two Phoenix police officers lost their jobs after they stopped a bikini clad woman who had run from a rear end collision. The officers handcuffed her, drove her back to the accident scene to complete the paper work, and then drove her to elementary school where they knew that they would be alone. When they reached the school one of them fondled her breasts, abdomen, and buttocks while the other one watched and did nothing to help he...
was taken out of class after suspected of committing two break-in robberies. Investigator DiCostanzo did not read him the Miranda Warnings and did not call a legal guardian to be present during questioning. J.D.B instantly denied his involvement, but after DiCostanzo warned that he may face juvenile detention, he confessed. After the confession DiCostanzo told him he could refuse to answer any further questions and leave. “J.D.B nodded and provided further detail, including information about the location of the stolen items. Eventually J.D.B wrote a statement, at DiCostanzo’s request” (J.D.B. v. North Carolina) it was after the confession that DiCostanzo told J.D.B that he could refuse any further questions, but he hadn’t told him this previously. Following the questioning J.D.B. was charged for breaking and entering, and
On March 20th, 2018, I conducted an interview with J2018-0568B at the Butler County Juvenile Office. Prior to any questioning, J2018-0568B was read and explained the juvenile Miranda Warning by Juvenile Officer Salyer. J2018-0568B was accompanied by his grandmother (legal guardian) and his brother's girlfriend (power of attorney) during the interview.

In the course of the transcript we were to read for class, the officer posed as a 12-year-old girl. To convince the predator jazzeman04 that he was talking to a 12-year-old girl the officer placed a deceptive picture on “her” profile. The officer was also keen on the current chat lingo, and communicated in the same manner a girl of her age would talk. There were also many references to dealing with her mother being at home or calling her repeatedly on the telephone. Lastly, the officer actually communicated with predator on the phone to try to convince him that he was indeed talking to a young girl.
This paper will go through the first arrest that a new police officer did while responding to a house break in. It will show what a FTL would say to the new officer on how they did with the situation after the arrest. We will identify four issues during the arrest that related to the Miranda Laws. Then, we will try and relate these issues to a historical case. Later, we will carefully analysis the situation and see if we could resolve the issues or not. We will then go over how these issues could have been prevent from happening.
Christy Brzonkala was allegedly raped by Antonio Morrison and James Crawford. After multiple school hearings found Morrison guilty, he appealed his punishment of a two semester suspension and the school found it “excessive.” Brzonkala eventually dropped out of school.
Cheryl, sixteen, trainer for her high-school girl's volleyball team and photographer for the school newspaper, arrived at the gym at about 9:00 Saturday for a volleyball tournament. She left her purse and equipment with friends while she went to the restroom. When the game started and she hadn't returned to the team's bench, her friends went to look for her. Her raped body was found behind some stage backdrops on the balcony of the school auditorium(Booher 12). Sexual harassment and rape are prevalent in all aspects of society.
