“The Sun and Moon” by Chrysanthemum Ti is about a sister who just can't live up to her brothers accomplishments. Everything Ti does, she feels like she falls short of her older brother and begins to envy his talent. This competition makes her lose track of the importance of her brother in Ti’s life. She started to see her brother as a goal to beat instead of a childhood companion that is with her no matter what. Ti uses hyperbole, metaphor, and symbolism to show that competence can make people lose track of the fact that they have caring that benefit them in their lives. Ti uses a metaphor to show that despite her differences with her brother, Ti needs and wants her brother in her life. She writes, “Because without you, universe would spin out of orbit” (Ti 25). Chrysanthemum sees how important family is and knows that without her beloved brother, she would be sad and lonely. The word choice of “spin out of orbit” gives readers another image of Ti’s metaphor of the moon and sun. Since this is the last line in the poem, the also sees the development of Ti’s feelings her brother. Chrysanthemum no longer wants to be better than her brother, she is just grateful she has one. Often times, people take for granted their loved ones. People get caught up in being better that they forget how special it is to have those people in their lives in the first place. Chrysanthemum Ti expresses this in “The Sun and Moon” with her relationship with her brother.
