People all around the world are influenced by popular musicians. These musicians have the ability to change opinions and lives through their music. Musicians can either have a positive or negative impact depending on how they act. Some of the most influential musicians are Canadian. There has been some controversy Canadian musicians have been involved in over the past few years, but it is clear to see that they realized what they have done wrong and have changed. Canadian musicians such as, Drake and Justin Bieber, have changed the way Canadians act through their attitude and therefore have changed how people in other countries view Canada. Drake’s love for Canada, more specifically, Toronto, is evident in his lyrics and his concerts. He has influenced other people to appreciate the city and be proud of where they are from. Although Canadian musicians have been involved in some controversy over the past few years, they continue to positively represent Canadian society through their lyrics, interviews, and their concerts. …show more content…
Drake uses his success and talents to make Toronto the most loved city on earth (TheBrockPress 1).
He is humble to his roots (TorontoSun 10) and praises Toronto in his music (TheBrockPress 2). His love for Toronto is visible in all of his albums that are inspired by the city. In his song, “You & the 6”, on his most recent album, he says “You and the 6 raised me right”, speaking about his mother and being raised in the city of Toronto. He sings about Toronto and uses the names of roads and other areas on his album “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” and some of his earlier albums. (TheBrockPress 7). In a song called “Worst Behaviour”, he mentions a street name in Scarborough called Morningside. Torontonians are usually hesitant to say anything good about their city (TheStar 3), but thanks to Drake and his persuasive words about the city, he is making it respectable to love Toronto (TheGlobeAndMail
2). There have always been nicknames for Toronto and recently Drake has introduced a new nickname, “The 6”, that has caught on quickly. Drake announced the title of his yet-to-be released album “Views From The 6” in July 2014 (TheGlobeAndMail 2). The 6 became a worldwide trend on twitter (TheGlobeAndMail 3). The 6 refers to Toronto’s area code “416”. Drake has the numbers 416 tattooed on him for life (TheBrockPress 2). Drake has opened a store called “October’s Very Own”, in downtown Toronto. A lot of the merchandise in the store features a 6 to represent Toronto(TorontoLife 1). It has become one of the most famous handles the city has ever had and residents are proud of it (TheGlobeAndMail 5). Drake’s patriotism has caused many other people who live in the city or even other areas of Canada, to proudly admit that they love the city of Toronto. People often associate Canadian musicians attitudes with all Canadians; therefore, the way musicians speak during interviews have a big impact on people’s perspectives on Canadian citizens. In an interview Drake was speaking about his music, he said, “I’d like to just consider myself a messenger at this point, I really want you to hear that album and know that this city is what inspired it. And if you like that album . . . come check out this city.”(TheStar 14). Drake always has good things to say about the city and is constantly praising it. Drake is very patriotic and his patriotism is obvious in his interviews. He said in an interview with the CBC, “I remember a time in Toronto rap where it was not cool to be patriotic and you wanted to sound just as far away from Toronto as possible. I remember that time where there was an extreme obsession with American culture because that’s where all the superstars were, where all the rappers were.”(TheBrockPress 11). Even though some musicians have caused a lot of people to look at Canadians negatively, with musicians such as Drake, and other Canadian musicians being good role models and always speaking positively, more people are looking at Canada in a positive way. Canadian musicians hold concerts and big events all around the world and continue to positively represent Canada at these events. Drake holds a special event called OVO in Toronto every year and it has become a gathering for Drake to thank the city that helped him reach his goal (TorontoSun 10). OVO stands for “October’s Very Own” and is a music festival put together by Drake featuring many different new and upcoming artists every year. Some artists that have performed are Nicki Minaj, The Weeknd, Big Sean, J Cole, Kevin Hart, and many more. It is a very popular event that draws people from all over Canada and the United States to Toronto. There have been unfortunate incidents that have happened at after parties for this event. Drake has spoken out about these incidents and has expressed his concern of the escalating violence in the city (CBCNewsToronto 5). Through these special events, Drake shows how much he loves Toronto and how appreciative he is for everything that all his fans helped him achieve and he takes the time to thank them for it. It is clear that Canadian musicians have shaped the way Canadian society is looked at today, regardless of any controversy that they may have been involved in before. Their nationalism really shows through their influential lyrics, attitude, and their concerts. Their own nationalism has impacted other people in the country to become more appreciative of their hometown. Canada has now become more recognized and citizens are thought to have similar attitudes as the Canadian musicians. It must be recognized that Canadian musicians are the reason why Canadian society is becoming more and more appreciated. Thanks to these Canadian musicians and their positive attitudes and popular music, Canada and Canadian citizens are looked at from a different perspective.
Musicians and showcase there talent and sometimes shell shock people who never knew how good they are. Canada does this time over again in modern times and in early years. Canadians continue to reach top charts in other nations like America. Canadians even did this in the 1970's. Canadians musicians and entertainers of , the 1970's had major impact of their industries. As well they helped to showcase their impressive talent, passing the way for future generations of entertainers. Anna Murray, The Guess Who and Neil young are prime examples of Canadian pioneers who showed the world Canada's amazing talent even in the 1970.
Canada as a nation has been striving to characterize itself as more ?Canadian? for decades. This has included numerous struggles and events such as protests, bans, and the creation of the Massey Commission, to encourage national development in the arts, and support major companies like the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and National Film Board (NFB). However, this has not been an easy task for the Canadian government, as major influences from below the border (the United States) have been captivating the Canadian audiences by large. American media has had a momentous revolutionizing effect on Canada, even through efforts made to define Canada with its own cultural identity.
Many scholars have a notion that children and teens are highly susceptible to being influenced by the media due to their lack of real world experiences (Scharrer, 1957). With such a high population of young people in Canada we must be aware of the content broadcasted through mass media to encourage a more “Canadian” youth. Canadian television, films, and radio alike are often compared to that of American media, which contains highly identifiably American substance. Thus, Canadian identity and culture is greatly influenced by content derived from the USA. Otherwise, Canada has rich and diverse culture with its own economic systems, political ideologies and processes, ways of life and social mores (StatsCan, 2013). Therefore, it is up to Canadian regulations to motivate its citizens towards embracing a more Canadian identity and deter from Americanization. This paper will explore ways in which the Canadian music industry will help define and influence national identity as well as the political and societal benefits that will accompany implemented regulations. . Regulations of Canadian content defined using the MAPL system should be implemented by the CRTC to support Canadian ingenuity, values, and politics in order to form a more homogenous Canadian identity through music.
Chris McCandless, as described in John Krakauer’s book “Into the Wild,” endured many grueling tasks and hardships throughout his odyssey in the wild, but ultimately died of starvation and exposure from the elements. What would have happened if Chris survived and came back to society? If Chris changed his thought’s on how society worked, he might still be here with us today, but it would be difficult to imagine him changing his mind. During his time in the wild, Chris became inspired or enlightened by being alone. If he came back to society, he would be disappointed just like he was before. Quoting from Chris’s journal, Krakauer writes that “[t]o get an ID and a job feels extremely uncomfortable in society now [to chris] and must return to the road
Some weaknesses of James McBride’s “Hip Hop Planet” include its cynical tone and his attitude towards the musical side of Hip Hop. McBride opens the essay with a reflection on what his ultimate nightmare is. He showcases the Hip Hop community in a negative light with phrases like, “music that doesn’t seem to be music—rules the world” (McBride, pg. 1). This starts the essay off negatively because it misleads the reader by letting them think he is not a supporter of the Hip Hop movement. As you read the entire essay you realize this is not the case. The article itself isn’t very inviting because tone of the entire essay is very cold and cynical. He also doesn’t agree with the typical Hip Hop sound saying things like, “It sounded like a broken record” (McBride, pg. 1). The sound of Hip Hop music is what helps define it and is a crucial aspect of
Neil Young, who grew up in Ontario, Canada, was drawn into music at a very early age, and throughout his teens he played in several bands and was a mainstay at local folk clubs (Macnie, 2001). He started to build a respectable enough reputation, but didn’t hit upon any commercial recognition until he joined Buffalo Springfield, a band that also featured Stephen Stills, who would become a well-known singer-songwriter in his own right. While perhaps not attaining the success they deserved in term...
Songs are one way of expressing feelings and emotion, many artist do this constantly in their music. To some it is why they make music. There are endless signs and verses that hint at many things such as problems, politics, living in racist era’s also places. I chose to focus on one main rapper and his music only. I chose to examine, review, and study a few of his songs. Kid cudi grew up in cleveland, Ohio. His father passed away when he was a young age which affected the kid ever since. He writes about living his life and having to go through many obstacles
First of all, Cancon is meaningless since it holds everything still instead of changing the music industry for Canadian artists to blossom. In many cases, people cannot refer the accomplishments of well-known Canadian bands or artists to CanCon’s successes because CanCon did no help when these artists started their early career. Rush band is a typical example to prove this. Rush had limited local popularity until a song from their first album was picked up by a DJ in Cleveland for her play list, then the album was released in U.S to make them become famous over the world. At that time, CanCon has already existed but doing nothing. Although the purpose of CanCon is to help artists to build solid foundation, great popularity in Canada to break the pattern, meaning in order to get recognized in their home country, artists are usually required to reaches a peak of their career in U.S or Britain, it cannot be denied that the pattern is still there, even now. Because the American and British music business...
Although fame and being in the spotlight may seem like it’s all fun and games, when a celebrity starts doing bad things, those things spread like wild fire. The tabloids create an extended truth about the stories that actually take place. Everything that a star does is captured in either a video or a picture. All the privacy that you once had is now gone. You represent that nation to other countries and how we as Americans are suppose to be acting. All the bad things that our celebrities do, other countries see and base our nation upon. The actions, good or bad, are looked at as if we all do them. The Rolling Stones and Justin Bieber represent different time periods and how society has changed within the last few decades, but some of the actions stayed the same. There are drug scandals, ruined relationships, and a musical difference that is undeniable. The years have gone on and the actions had gotten worse. The Stones as well as Beiber have both had a massive impact on the world and the people that live in it.
CanCon regulations not only help define Canada as a unity but help the creative Canadians that express themselves through musical expression. David Young states, “According to the CRTC, the higher requirements would expand the exposure given to Canadian artists and provide increased support to the Canadian music industry.” (Young, 2004) Therefore, in order for the Canadian music industry to expand and become successful there must be government intervention of content regulations. This is reinforced in the article The government steps in, “Without government support, the number of Canadian films, records and television shows would be much lower than it already is.”(1995) If CanCon regulations are not in place the amount of Canadian works will contract until one day there are none left. Hence, Canadian culture being lost within many other cultures. Shedd et al. state that having CanCon regulations in place “Could promote greater national unity. Similarly, it could promote a distinct Canadian culture, and as a result, a greater national identity or pride.”(Shedd et al. 1990) This helps to enforce that with CanCon regulations put in place the Canadian culture can be truly identified through television, films and music.
Canadians have come along way in their culture and identity. Canadians have participated in multiple wars and battles that have shaped our country and the people that live in this country. But it’s not just the violence what shaped our country but the people and traditions that originated outside of Canada and was brought here. European, British and French cultures and tradition have all influenced Canada’s culture and identity. (Blattberg, C. 13, January 02). Immigrants from all over the world have in the passed contributed to the way we view Canada and because of that we live in a safe, mosaic, multicultural country. (Blattberg, C. 13, January 02).There have also been the First Nations people who started Canada’s good reputation and because of them we have accomplished everything that we have done today. (Blattberg, C. 13, January 02).
People are surrounded by music every day of their lives. They hear it in their homes, on the radio on their way to work; some people have even caught themselves humming the tune of their favorite song to themselves. But how many people actually listen and not just hear the music they are listening to? Teens in particular don’t realize the message behind the music they are quoting the lyrics to, or the effect it has on them. In today’s culture where rap music has become increasingly popular, many teens aren’t realizing what they are listening to. A lot of teens would argue that the music they listen to has no effect on them, but they are wrong. Rap music, especially, has had a major impact on teenagers in today’s society.
Music producers have an influence on the music that today’s youth listen to that many are affected by, even though the producers are unaware of it. Today there’s a lot of drug abuse, violence, and sexuality all on the rise, even though hip hop itself is not to blame. Imagine our youth all over the country being exposed to this explicit language. There is no need to imagine, because it is already happening. Ever since the rise of Rap and Hip Hop music, teens have been turning to them to help solve their problems.

The cover of this magazine can be analyzed using different theories, including the semiotics of symbolic theory, performance as political action idea and postmodern theories within cultural studies.
With the music being the highly profitable, capitalist enterprise that it is today, it is no wonder that it is controlled and regulated by a few large conglomerates that exist is today’s world. It is important to make clear that although evidence is being presented of the positive aspects of globalization through music that there is overwhelming evidence that cultural imperialism is more than it seems on the outside. One must keep in mind that cultural imperialism, globalization and the creation of a global village is a business. People are profiting at other people’s loss of cultural identity, they are sold a culture and heritage. With the every growing N’Sync fan clubs and Britney clones, the world is turning into a stage for pop culture and its glamorous unattainable standards.
