In the book A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.The main character Ebenezer Scrooge is a mean,ignorant and lonely old man who hates Christmas, and thinks it is stupid and there is no point in celebrating it.Throughout the book Scrooge is visited by four spirits.The spirits are Jacob Marley his dead co-worker,the spirit of christmas past,the spirit of christmas present and the spirit of future christmas who change his outlook on Christmas,In the middle of the book Scrooge begins to transition into a kind and empathetic person person,because of these spirits who visit him.At the end of the book he is a happy and generous person.

In stave 5 Scrooge is a new person he is happy and generous now.He is generous because he says “I’ll send it to Bob Cratchitts.”(64).Also he is happy because he says “I Am as light as a feather,I Am as happy as an angel,I Am as merry as a school boy,I Am as giddy as a drunken man.A merry Christmas to everybody!A happy new year to all the world.”(63)He is happy because he says “I'm not going to stand for this sort of thing any longer.And therefore...I’ll raise your salary,and endeavor to assist your struggling family...make up fires and buy another coal-scuttle before you dot another I,Bob Cratchit”(68).This quote shows he is happy because it says he thinks he is as happy as all of these things.This quote shows he is happy because he sends a turkey to Bob Cratchit on this day.Also that quotes shows he is generous because he is going to raise Bob’s salary and make his life better. Therefore I think that the theme of this book is to make better choices for the future and that the choices you make in the past will come back to you in the future.I can conclude that Scrooge will make better choices in the present for the future and to remember to have Christmas spirit and remember the lessons the spirits have taught him.
Dickens displays guilt as the main form of how Scrooge’s character develops into a compassionate person by the end of the novella. As Scrooge feels this quilt, it's purely based on the visions that the ghosts provide which further causes Scrooge to realise the consequences of his actions. His alienation from specific characters that he used to love such as Belle, “...has displaced me…” whom left Scrooge, due to his desire for money and wealth which grew. This desire grows with him as he is rejecting the christmas joy and spirit as he continuously states that Christmas is a “humbug,” but by stating this it provides comparison. Just like the play, Ebenezer Scrooge is the main character in the story. He is a mean, cold-hearted man that has no Christmas spirit whatsoever. All that Scrooge cares about and will ever care about is his wealth until he is taken on a journey. He is lead by 3 ghosts of his past, present, and future as he was in the play. These ghosts show him what Christmas spirit is and try to force it upon him. All of this finally hits him once he is taken to the future and witnesses his own grave.
